Vista Ridge sr Travis Fort, the defending champ, led through the first mile in 4:41. He continued to lead through 2 miles, with Big Spring jr Zach Dawson on his shoulder. With about an 800 to go, Dawson moved past and Fort stayed close. Now Little Cypress-Mauriceville sr Drew Bean, the #5 returnee and Region II champ, was coming into the picture. Bean was rolling around the final U-turn and passed a slipping-back Dawson just before crossing the road and went by Fort just after the road, with about 200 to go.

Drew Bean continued to pull away, clocking 15:15.25 for gold, ahead of Travis Fort in 15:21.95 and Zach Dawson in 15:23.20. After the race, Drew Bean was obviously pleased. “I was behind and could hear everyone yelling for me. I felt good, but didn’t want to go too early and I could see I was already catching up.”

Big Spring dominated the team competition with 47 points, including Zach Dawson’s bronze and three more in the top 8 scorers. Its 16:00 team average and individual times would have put them right in the middle of the 5A team medal race. Lockhart, ranked #1 in the Texas Coaches poll, earned silver with 80 points and a fine 16:16 average. Poteet took the 3rd and final team medals with 99 points.

McKinney North sr Samantha Means, 3rd in 2005, led through the mile in 5:22, with defending champ Western Hills sr Kerrie Seaver and Vista Ridge fr Ashley Isham in a small pack not far behind.  Means continued to pour it on, breaking the tape in 10:54.75, followed by Seaver in 11:12.10 and Highland Park fr Sara Sutherland in 11:12.70 for 3rd.

Samantha Means was Homecoming Queen last week, and State Champ this week!  She said, “I was favored last year and got 3rd, so every day since, that was my motivation.  It was windy, but I have strong legs so it didn’t bother me too much.  She’s already decided on a college. “I signed with SMU.”

The team race was all Hereford.  Its Region average of 11:50 was the quickest of the day, better than 5A champ Keller, and they were even faster today.  With 55 points and an 11:44 average, the team had all 5 scorers in the top 21.  Montgomery was 2nd with 111, just ahead of Boerne with 117.
