Big Sandy soph Jason Hamilton was third as a freshman, and came back to win it all today in 16:52.05, followed by Evant sr Andrew Gordon in 17:09.35 and Sundown sr Tommy Serna in 17:14.15.

Jason Hamilton said, “The first mile was really fast, I usually try to sit back. The first 400 was 63 and the mile was 4:44. Andrew Gordon was pushing it. I pulled away right after the 2-mile mark.”

Seymour soph Julia Holub claimed gold with an 11:50.95 clocking, ahead of Wheeler fr Haley Sparks in 12:00.70 and Hamlin fr Jaylen Rodgers in 12:03.55.

Julia Holub said, “It was hot, but you have to deal with it. I wasn’t sure I could win, but knew I had a chance. Our coaches really pushed us this year. We’re about 6 hours from here (Round Rock), and run most of our meets up near Wichita Falls. Kelsey Johnson (4:58 performer from Iowa Park) is the big competition in that area.”

Sundown struck boys team gold with 47 points and averaged 17:56.76, ahead of Boys Ranch with 59.

Sundown coach Paul Darden said, “Our top three played a football game last night (they’re 10-0), got up at 3:00 AM to drive to the Midland airport to catch a flight that got to Austin at 8am (for this race at 11:10). They’re tough, they’re true Roughnecks (school nickname) to the core, I guarantee you that! Two of these guys were on our state championship team 2 years ago.”

Lindsay captured the girls team title with 88 points and a 13:00.49 average. Lindsay sr Chelsea Hermes was the 2-time defending individual champ, but after she and two teammates played in a Regional volleyball game last night before driving to Round Rock, it’s fair to say she wasn’t at full strength today, finishing 8th. And now they’ll be heading back for the Region final at 7:30 tonight!

Lindsay coach Robin Hess said, “We have about 120 students in the school. Besides being the head cross country coach, I’m an assistant basketball, ass’t volleyball, ass’t track and head softball coach. We’re losing three seniors, but have three 8th-graders that look pretty good so we’ll still be competitive next year.”
