US True Freshmen Highlights
| Virginia Tech’s Queen Harrison (Hermitage HS, VA) led all true freshmen, finishing 3rd in the 400 hurdles and also 5th in the 100 hurdles. “My season went okay, but really starting progressing with conference, region and now here. I enjoy both hurdle races, after focusing more on the triple jump and 300 hurdles in high school. The hardest part of the transition from high school was going from being the best on the team to now being pushed in practice." | | | | | | Texas A&M’s Zuheir Sharif (Franklin HS, CA) spanned a PR 52-8 for 4th in the triple jump. A 6th round foul looked to be in the 54-foot neighborhood. “I grew up in this area, so there were lots of family, friends and old rivals cheering me on. A change for me has been that my high school practices were harder (physically), while my college workouts are more technical. Next up is the US Junior Nationals in Indy.”

Evander Wells, Ahmad Rashad and Scott Wims (left to right) | The men’s 200 was the deepest event for freshmen, with Tennessee’s Evander Wells (Stone Mountain HS, GA) in 5th, Nebraska’s Scott Wims (Ft Wayne Northrop HS, IN) 7th, USC’s Ahmad Rashad (Carman-Ainsworth HS, MI) 8th and Florida State’s Charles Clark (Bayside HS, VA) 9th.
Wells’ outdoor season got off to a great start with a 20.43 in his first meet. “I strained my abdomen in that race, so I didn’t run the 200 again until conference.” The biggest adjustment in college has been “running tough rounds in meets. In high school, I could usually take it easy if there were prelims. Now every round is all-out. Here, the two rounds of the 200 on Thursday was very hard.” He also ran the 2nd leg on the 3rd-place 4x100 team.
Clark won his semi-final on Thursday, but then strained a hamstring anchoring the winning 4x100 relay on Friday evening. The 2006 NON champ said, “With the leg, my coach told me to just finish (Saturday’s 200 final) to make All-American. I should be ready for the 200 at US Nationals in 2 weeks. This is just the beginning for me, I just started school this semester.”

| | | McNeese State’s Chris Hill (Sulphur HS, LA) finished 5th in the javelin throw. His prelim throw of 238-10 is a new US Junior record. LSU’s Preston Chatham, last year’s Louisiana 5A champ ahead of Hill, placed a fine 12th.
|
| South Carolina’s Krystal Cantey (Winslow HS, NJ) placed 5th in the 400 hurdles, and added the lead-off leg on the silver-medal 4x400 squad. Cantey won the Nike Outdoor hurdles as a junior, but suffered from hamstring problems last year. “I ran a lifetime best (56.20) at the Region meet. College is different, but great. The biggest change is being on my own, and being responsible for getting things done, including practice and school.”

Baylor’s LeJerald Betters (Waco HS, TX) placed 6th in the 400 and blazed a 44.4 second leg on the gold-medal 4x400 team. Still eligible for “junior” competition, he’s shutting it down and will skip US Jr Nats.
| | Florida’s Calvin Smith (Freedom HS, FL) equaled his indoor 400 place, finishing 7th
