NTN South Region Roundup Nov. 4

SO#1 Woodlands TX boys & Kingwood TX girls win Regions, Tupelo MS boys perfect at State

week ended 11/4/2006 South Region

by John Sullivan, NTN South region editor

boys - girls

BOYS

SO#1/US#12 The Woodlands TX
SO#3 A&M Consolidated TX
SO#6 Georgetown TX
The toughest region in Texas was II-5A Boys, with the contenders holding 3 of the South top 10 and the #1-2-4-9 spots in the Texas Coach’s poll. The Woodlands tightened its grip on SO#1/TX#1 with an impressive 40 point performance, its 24th Region title in the last 26 years. The Highlanders depth was evident as they had all 7 in before any other team had 5 finishers. "Our team was able to win without its best effort, which is a trademark of all great teams," said The Woodlands coach Dan Green said. "I believe the guys are ready for State. The trick will be to have a normal week and get to Round Rock as relaxed as possible."

A&M Consolidated was the nearest pursuer with 59 points, led by Foot Locker finalist sr Duncan Phillips, an easy winner in 14:44 for 3 miles. He appears to be on a similar track as last year, beaten a few times early in the season, but then putting it all together in a bid for the state title. Unranked Plano West nabbed the final state qualifying spot, taking 3rd with 150. Georgetown, running without their normal #3 and fighting some lingering illnesses, wasn’t on top of their game and finished a disappointing non-qualifying 4th with 153. Georgetown coach Andrew Braun said, "We just did not have it on Saturday. We’re running in the Open race at NTN. We will have everyone back for that race, and hopefully healthy, so that we perform well."

SO#2/US#20 Southlake Carroll TX
At Region I-5A, Southlake Carroll had 4 in the top 14 on its way to a winning total of 65 points. As expected, jr Colby Lowe claimed individual honors in 15:04 for 3 miles, continuing his march toward a showdown at State with fellow Foot Locker finalist Duncan Phillips, who prevailed last year. El Paso Socorro, the top 5A team in West Texas, earned a return trip to the state meet with 93 points for silver. Flower Mound, last year’s state runner-up and NTN squad, grabbed the final state spot with 135 for 3rd.

Southlake Carroll coach Robert Ondrasek said, "We did what we had to do. Our usual #5 (Ahmed Toure) had an off-day, effected by allergies that are sensitive to this area at this time of year, as many others are. He should bounce back at state."

The Crusaders placed 5 in the top 17 to pace the field with 49 points and averaged 16:10 for 5k. Coach Mike Kerley was obviously pleased. "It feels wonderful. These seniors made the commitment 4 years ago (when Strake moved from the private schools state association into the UIL "public schools" classification). They were cool, calm and collected all week. I was more nervous than they were, but tried not to show it."

Kingwood was again close, scoring 62 and averaging 16:15. Cinco Ranch capitalized on the 1-2 finish by jr Zac Flowers (15:21) and sr Kyle Goldsmith (15:28) to grab 3rd, rounding out the state qualifiers. Mayde Creek just missed, scoring 122 for 4th.

SO#7 Plano West TX
SO#8 The Woodlands TX
Plano West has been quietly having a good season, a bit out of the limelight and missing some of the big meets due to travel restrictions mandated by their school district. Coach Kolleen Thornton commented prior to Region, "We are preparing this week for a great performance. All we can do is go out and do our best and what we have trained to do. I am looking forward to a great race."

With a win at McNeil, allowed by the district since it’s on the state meet course, and now here at Region II-5A, with 91 points, they’ve got people’s attention. They averaged 11:56 and had a 43-second spread. The Woodlands, rebounding from a loss at District, claimed team silver with a solid performance which included 4th from sr Adrienne DiRaddo who had collapsed at the District meet. A&M Consolidated secured the final state meet slot, taking 3rd with 105. A game College Park squad, in only its 2nd year of existence, just missed with 116.

OTHER RESULTS:
Hereford TX turned in a stellar performance at Region I-4A. Not only were its 33 points enough for the team crown, its 11:50 average for 3200 was best-of-the-day - bettering even the 11:55 posted by 5A champ Keller. "We are excited about our regional meet," said coach Ray Baca just days before the meet. "A few of our kids were sick recently (school outbreak of strep throat), but everyone should be ready to roll on Saturday. We think if we run like we are capable of, we should win. Right now our goal is 3 in the top 10, and 5 in the top 15." And sure enough, he hit the nail on the head, with #3 in 10th and #5 in 15th exactly!

San Antonio Reagan TX struck gold at Region IV-5A with 79 points. The top 5 averaged 12:06 for 3200, led by sr Vanessa Schroeder’s 11:38 silver medal effort. In the 4A contest on the same day, Vista Ridge frosh Ashley Isham broke the tape in 11:31, leading her team to the 4A title with 53 points and a 12:02 average.

In a tight 3-way contest in Mississippi state 4A action, Pearl MS was 1st (58 points, 4th consecutive title, 16:42 4k average), edging out Saltillo MS (59) and Pontotoc MS (62).
