Chelsey Sveinsson smashes course record
Kickapoo MO sweeps again
Northern Arizona men win, OSU 4th
by John Dye

Greenhills TX junior Chelsey Sveinsson (right), ranked US#1 in SteveU's DyeStat Elite Top 25, ran 10:31.9 for 3200 meters, 24 seconds better than the old record (10:56.1 by Sarah Saffa of Tulsa Union in 2002) and 53 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.

"I'm very excited," Chelsey said afterward.  "My goal was to go sub-11."

Her goal for the year?  "Definitely to win Foot Locker."  As a sophomore last year, Sveinsson entered the US all time top 10 outdoors in both the mile (4:40.24) and 2-mile (10:04.85) in her double gold performance at Nike Outdoor Nationals in June.

Records are on the back burner, Sveinsson said.  "Joetta Clark told me to just enjoy myself in high school; records will come.  That's my philosophy."

Sveinsson chopped 14 seconds off her US-leading 3200 meter cross country time this season.  Her next outing will be the Chili Pepper in Arkansas 2 weeks from now.

Sveinsson ran 28 seconds faster than last year here.  She said she didn't know if she is that much better than last year, but she is definitely improved.  "I'm coming off a bigger base than last year," she said.

Just then an excited Greenhill teammate came up and announced she just got a new PR.  Chelsey smiled and gave her a big high five and a hug.

Kickapoo MO swept the 6A team titles for the second straight year.

US#5 Northern Arizona men won a close university men's race behind Jordan Chipangama's 23:44.70 8k win as host Oklahoma State, ranked 2nd in the country, finished 4th with German Fernandez sitting out due to injury and Girma Mecheso finishing 22nd.  Lillian Badaru 17:10.50 5k led Texas Tech to victory in the women's race.
