DyeStat XC Region Review SO

Summary of South Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 15, 2007

By John Sullivan, Dyestat SO Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS
SO#1/US#9 The Woodlands TX
rested its top 7 this week. The “B” team still scored a perfect 15 at the Oak Ridge Invite.

Coach Dan Green said, “We had another great effort (two weeks ago) at Montgomery in absolutely horrible conditions. I believe that the guys showed that Friday Night Lights was no fluke. We’ve made some adjustments to our training this year which seems to be what the doctor ordered. This week, our younger guys were gaining confidence at the varsity level and getting ready for next year, while our older guys were getting in some great training.

Next: Texas A&M Invite

SO#2/US#7 Southlake Carroll TX
was off this week

Coach Robert Ondrasek said, “We’re in the tough part of our training (uses the Paavo Method) and the team is tired. Colby (Lowe, state champ and 2-time Foot Locker finalist) is running very well, going by the mile marks in 4:30, with CJ Brown (junior) right with him. And then Colby just pulls away in the next 800. We're anxious to see some great competition this week at A&M.”

Next: Texas A&M Invite

SO#3 Del Rio TX
steamrolled the Angelo State field with its top-5, running as the “Blue” team, striking gold with 19 points and a 44-second spread, while its “White” team secured silver with 62. Senior Richard Zapata led the charge, breaking the tape in 16:49, with jr Chuy Ordaz just 2 seconds behind.

Coach Ric Smith said, ”Our 1-5 could be different each week because they’re all capable of being our #1 runner at anytime. All our kids have great work ethics. We have 126 runners (boys & girls) on the team this season. We have 60 middle school kids running this year, which is the key to having good teams year after year.”

Mayde Creek claimed bronze with 80, while Cedar Park’s B team tallied 115 for 4th. Rounding out the top 5 was SO#10 Corpus Christi Carroll scoring 120, with usual #1 man running #4 today after a hard fall early in the race and without the expected #3 who returns this coming week.

SO#7 Rogers AR
racked up a great win at the Missouri Southern Stampede against 39 squads from the South and Heartland regions, scoring 53 and averaging 15:39 for the 5000 meter course. Rogers was led by defending 7A state champ sr Aaron Hamilton, 3rd in 15:21, and its next 4 followed within 36 seconds. Incidentally, those four are the #2-3-4-7 state 7A returnees. HL#8 Potosi MO claimed the team silver with 138. The next South teams were Tulsa Union OK in 4th with 158 (16:03 avg) and bubble team Deer Creek OK with 221 (16:23 avg).

Coach Carlton Efurd said, "This is one of the bigger wins that I've been a part of while coaching the Mounties. Our practices times told me we were in good shape. I thought if we ran well we would have a chance to win and obviously we ran well against some great competition! We didn't have our 4th and 5th guys due to a soccer tournament so I was really pleased with Jordan Falls 20th place finish. Forrest Roth also had an outstanding race."

Martin, with a season-opening win on 9/1 at Bayou Boogie and a 2nd-place showing at the Mobile (AL) XC Challenge last week, grabbed 5 of the top 12 places here to capture the team title with 35 points. Jesuit, without #1 man Kevin Fitzgerald who has a sore foot, ended up 2nd with 52.

Br. Martin coach Ryan Gallagher said, “I’ve been very pleased with how we’ve competed in our first 3 meets. We just focus on ourselves and running as well as we can. It was nice that the weather was cool, it was a good day to run fast.”

Jesuit coach Peter Kernion said, “We normally do not run well early in the season, but we are not where we need to be at this point. We appear to be an unmotivated team that is just going through the motions. Brother Martin is much improved and looks like a team on a mission.”

clashed at the Humble Invite. With these three closely-ranked teams in the field, there was no clear favorite. It was tight as expected, with Cinco Ranch coming out on top with 55 points (7-8-9-15-16). SO#3 Kingwood (1-6-14-18-22) got the nod for silver over SO#4 The Woodlands (2-10-11-13-25) on the 6th-man tie-breaker, 27-29, with Kingwood now 2-1 over their rivals in this young season.
