Dan Green of The Woodlands High School was recently named the National Coach of the Year for boys cross country by the NFHS Coaches Association. The honor was bestowed based on the following criteria: career coaching record, community service, involvement in other school activities, involvement in the profession at local, state and national levels, and basic philosophy of athletics.

It’s easy to see how the first criteria was met, coming off a cross country season that included a state record 14th team championship and a club squad that finished 4th at Nike Team Nationals in its 3rd appearance, as well as having produced more boys Foot Locker finalists than any other school. He also served as the US Junior head coach at the World Cross Country meet in Japan in 2007, and is a frequent and well-received speaker at many coaching clinics and forums. He’s developed his own coaching philosophy over 30+ years, but credits Joe Vigil and John McDonnell, to name a couple, for plenty of guidance and influence.

Congratulations Coach Green!
