FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #2 - Brentsville VA (Next Meet: Northwest Districts VA 10/26)
SE Bubble - Hermitage VA (Next Meet: Colonial Districts VA 10/28)

The Hermitage boys pulled a miracle turnaround in one week at the Disney Classic in Orlando, Florida as they upset NTN SE #2 Brentsville by a mere one point with both teams record low team scores of 31 and 32 points respectively. The Panthers had dropped out of the Nike Team Nationals Southeast Region rankings for the second time this season after a humbling eighth place finish at last weekend's Maymont Festival to only come back in one week to take down one of the top teams in the state and Southeast region in Brentsville.

Brentsville had not raced since their fourth place finish in the Nike Race of Champions at Great American on September 23rd as Coach Rob Dulin's squad was the second highest finishing team in the region in Hoover. The race hosted by Disney at the Wide World of Sports Complex's 5K course in Orland turned out to be a two-team show between Brentsville and Hermitage with seven of the top eight finishers and ten of the top 14 finishers from the two Virginia schools.

Brentsville senior Adam Henken led the stream of Virginia dominance in the meet in winning the race by 26 seconds with a time of 15:57.48. While Henken's victory was not strongly contested, the rest of the individual races between Brentsville and Hermitage runners would be very tight.

John Vial (2nd, 16:23.97) set the momentum for Hermitage in holding off Brentsville's second best runner in Henry Melius (3rd, 16:27.93) as one of Brentsville's greatest strengths this season had been putting two runners in before most team's first runner with Henken and Melius.

Coach Joe Pardue's boys had two of the next three finishers with senior Ben Hendrick (4th, 16:42.91) and junior Nathan Puckett (6th, 16:49.45) as Puckett finished just ahead of Brentsville junior Ray Delgado (7th, 16:50.45).

The quick score through three gave Brentsville a one point margin at 10 to 11, but Hermitage senior Walter Kidd finishing eighth in 16:57.28 and two point scorers coming in between Kidd and Brentsville's fourth runner in Luke Watts (11th, 17:05.43) tilted the balance in Hermitage's favor.

While Brentsville's fifth runner Andrew Johnson (13th, 17:15.06) just beat Kieran's fifth in Kieran Lee (14th, 17:17.84) by one place and two seconds, the effort was one point short to tie and two points shy to win.

To showcase how close the team battle really was between the two teams, taking out other scoring individuals to make a dual meet score would give Brentsville the win at 27 to 28 over Hermitage. Disney was pretty close to a dual meet between the two with each having their top five runners in the top 14 places.

WENDY'S INVITATIONAL
Saturday, October 7th
McAlpine Greenway Park - 5K

RESULTS: http://milesplit.com/meet/results/39075 (Courtesy of NCRunners.co/nc.runners.com)

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #3 - Chapel Hill NC (Next Meet: Tanglewood NC 10/14 - JV Only)
SE Bubble - Fort Mill SC (Next Meet: Furman SC 10/14)

It was not an understatement at last weekend's Maymont Festival that the field was so fiercely packed and competitive that one of the bottom finishing teams could have won the meet. Case in point was proven with Maymont eighth place finishing team Hermitage knocking off SE #2 Brentsville and then more so with Maymont 11th place finishing team Fort Mill of South Carolina nearly defeating Maymont champion and SE #3 Chapel Hill of North Carolina at the Wendy's Invitational held at the home of Foot Locker South at McAlpine Greenway Park. Fort Mill finished 82 points behind Chapel Hill at Maymont and this past Saturday in Charlotte, shrunk that gap to an amazing close three points.

Truth be told though that Fort Mill was racing without one of its top runners at Maymont as they possess one of the fastest middle school distance runners in the nation in seventh grader Mark Blackmon as Virginia high school rules prevented the middle schooler from competing in the varsity event at Maymont. Blackmon set two AAU national age group records this past summer for 800 meters (2:05) and 1500 meters (4:25), while tying the 3K mark at 9:44. Blackmon follows a line of great runners in his family as his older sister, Angelina, was a Foot Locker finalist and currently runs at NC State University.

Blackmon showed how he can bolster the Fort Mill lineup by finishing ninth individually in the invitational division with a personal best time of 15:47. Pretty amazing time considering this regional editor, set a senior race record on the same McAlpine 5K course in 15:51 at Foot Locker South back in 2002.

Surpisingly enough, Blackmon was not the top finisher for Fort Mill as the senior heavy Fort Mill squad had David Willis lead Coach Scott Barefield's squad to the line in sixth place at 15:37. Fort Mill's #1 runner at Maymont in senior David Huckaby had an off day at Wendy's running fourth for the team in 16:24, while fellow seniors Travis Owens (17th, 16:09) and Josh Mabry (45th, 16:38) ran #3 and #5 to fill out their top five. With a team score of 106 points, Fort Mill also nearly had their entire top seven under 17 minutes with juniors Daniel Kalshoven (57th, 16:52) and Ryan Fielden (71st, 17:02).

Chapel Hill did not necessarily have a bad by any means. Sophomore Taylor Gilland ran exceptional once again as the team's front runner with a 15:25 personal best run for fourth place honors. Chapel Hill senior Miles Rampel (13th, 15:57) and junior Jack Marshall (11th, 16:04) with top 15 finishers and nearly two more runners under 16 minutes for 5K gave Coach Ron Olsen a strong top three. Seniors Kent Pecora (27th, 16:23) and Taylor Muir (44th, 16:37) also looked better from Maymont as Pecora was not having to double back from a double overtime soccer game like last Saturday in Richmond and Muir moved up one team position to #5 as he is getting back into form after struggling with illness early on in the season.

Fort Mill averaged 46 seconds faster from Maymont with their six common finishers in both invitiational division races, while Chapel Hill had a four second slower average at 42 seconds with seven common finishers. Adjust Blackmon's time according for Maymont with 46 seconds added on and he finishes 11th overall in a time of 16:33 at Maymont. Fort Mill's adjusted team score would approximately place them in second again to Chapel Hill at Maymont and just ahead of actual Maymont runner-up and SE #5 Jamestown of Virginia. However, if Hermitage and Fort Mill can make huge improvements in one week, who is to say that the other teams from Maymont could not have done the same.

Fort Mill will get another crack at a top ranked Southeast team next weekend at Furman against SE #4 Parkview of Georgia.

McCALLIE INVITATIONAL

SE #4 - Parkview GA (Next Meet: Furman SC 10/14)

Despite racing without two of their top six guys with Brett Richardson taking a week off after suffering from severe hydration from his race at Great American and Brian Detweiler missing the meet due to a soccer tournament, the SE #4 Parkview boys took care of business against some solid competition at the McCallie Invite in Chattanooga including a tough Baylor squad.

Parkview top runner Michael Winston bounced back nicely from a tough outing at Great American as stomach problems caused by IB profen intake were the source. With the issue resolved, Winston went out and won the McCalline Invite in a solid time of 15:45. Meanwhile, Josh Pinson continued to be a bedrock of consistency of Coach James Tigue's crew finishing fifth in a time of 15:59.

The gap was a little larger than Coach Tigue would have liked after Pinson with Marcelis Lynch (13th, 16:31), JJ Van Tonder (18th, 16:46), and Nick Williams (31st, 17:08) rounding out their scoring five, but expects everyone back including Richardson and Detweiler for next Saturday's showdown at Furman against a team that will likely make a big leap into the newest rankings in Fort Mill of South Carolina.

OCTOBERFEST INVITATIONAL

Great Meadows - 5K
The Plains, VA

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #7 - Thomas Jefferson S&T VA (Next Meet: Glory Days VA 10/14)
SE #9 - Quince Orchard MD (Next Meet: Glory Days VA 10/14)

A steady downpour of rain that started yesterday and continued throughout today made Saturday's Octoberfest Invitational at Great Meadows a mud slop-fest as two over flowing creek crossings and long stretches of mud and puddles made for tough race conditions for the high school runners throughout the day. Not a day for anyone to run a personal best, but some outstanding performances were recorded throughout the day.

Maryland's best in Quince Orchard (142 pts) as well as NTN Southeast #9 ranked squad knocked off SE #7 Thomas Jefferson (161 pts) for the "A" boys team title in a close battle that could be even closer than the current results show. Problems in the chute caused a delay of the "A" boys team scores being available to coaches and still appear to have some issues.

Coach Matt Ryan's boys from Thomas Jefferson were led once again by another strong individual run from Paul Norland in seventh place at 17:24.26. Richard Prevost had a top 25 finish in 24th place (18:03.92), while defending AAA 1000 meter indoor state champion Taylor Bostick stepped up with his best cross country race in the #3 spot in 27th place (18:07.22).

The next group of Thomas Jefferson runners struggled to keep the time gap down with James Komen (46th, 18:25.31) and Aiden McHugh (67th, 18:41.45) rounding out a top five for the SE #7 squad. Bostick stepping it up was a positive sign for Thomas Jefferson though if the rest of the team can bring their "A" game when it matters even if top runner Brian Landry is unable to return this season.

Quince Orchard coach Seann Pelkey knew his team needed to venture south to face competition in Virginia with his top ranked Maryland squad having NTN aspirations. At Octoberfest, Quince Orchard at least faced one of the handful of NTN caliber Virginia squads in Thomas Jefferson and came out as the winner. Only 34 seconds separated their top five as their top two finished right together in David Laratta (21st, 17:55.74) and Reagan Lynch (22nd, 17:56.31). Neal Darmody (28th, 18:07.22) and Greg Bove (33rd, 18:07.22) were not far behind with top 35 finishes. Artem Panasenkov rounded out the top five in 50th place (18:29.86).

Quince Orchard and Thomas Jefferson will go at it once again next Saturday at the Glory Days Grill Invitational at Bull Run Regional Park as other top teams such as SE #6 West Springfield and Clarke County will be running at full strength there also.

SE # 8 - Chiles FL (Next Meet: Florida Panhandle Championships FL 10/14)

One of the runners on the SE #8 Chiles squad from Florida happens to be the son of Florida State head coach Bob Braman as Coach Scott Gowan's team took to the home course of the Seminoles this weekend. A Chiles alumni in redshirt Alex Miletich, also runs at FSU and his younger brother, Bryan currently runs in the top five for Chiles. After taking a week off and skipping the flrunners.com Invite last weekend, Chiles continued its dominance within the state of Florida with a 29 point victory over Jesuit High School of Tampa (145 pts) with a team score of 116 points. Jesuit actually presented a fair challenge and the first that Chiles has seen from any in-state rival this fall.

Jesuit had the front runner in Connor Revord's eighth place effort of 16:11.28, but Chiles was too well packed to be defeated with a 29 second spread for their top five in Chris Lake (16th, 16:31.45), Stan Reecy (17th, 16:33.17), Chris Renneker (30th, 16:59.49), Bryan Miletch (31st, 16:59.95), and Calvin Vannoy (32nd, 17:00.08).

Whenever the Episcopal girls race in Florida, expect to see them bunched together in the results. Who needs to show off and break away from the field when everyone up front is wearing the same burgundy and gold Episcopal jersey as you. Coach Michelle Krueger's SE #2 girls made easy work of the competition at the FSU Invitational as they tallied in Tallahassee a low team score of 25 points as they tuned up for next weekend's big Southeast versus Northeast clash at the Manhattan Invitational.

The Episcopal girls could have played paper, scissors, rocks to decide who would crose the line for them as they allowed Astronaut's Devin Spoerle (1st, 19:22.24) and Pensacola Catholic's Chloe Kowalski (2nd, 19:31.26) to finish ahead of them, but no one else as five of them came in together in less than a two second span in an impressive display for all witnesses. The Episcopal monsoon included Hadley Ferguson (3rd, 19:34.74), Leslie Blackshear (4th, 19:35.16), Maggie Traylor (5th, 19:35.57), Katie Traylor (6th, 19:36.00), and Laura Steel (7th, 19:36.39)

Christine Griggs was not far off the top five pack in tenth place in 19:46.08 to showcase greater depth for the Southeast region's second ranked team.

The SE #5 Lake Braddock girls finished second to a very tough MW #3 Minister of Ohio team at the Jesse Owens Invitational held at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park in Oakville, Alabama as Coach Mike Mangan's team got its first true test this fall. The Lady Bruins earned a fair grade in Alabama as they were 27 points behind the Ohio team as senior Michelle Presley led the team with a seventh place personal best run of 18:28.42.

Minster had three runners under 19 minutes and in the top 12 places, which was too much for Lake Braddock to overcome, but still had solid runs from Erin Landy (18th, 19:12.93), Hayley Sullivan (22nd, 19:19.67), Anna Corrigan (28th, 19:37.35), and Christine Moore (34th, 19:46.82) to round out their top five. Moore, who has been battling sickness the past two races, beat top finisher at Jesse Owens in Presley at their team opener and certaintly at top form could have made for a decent point swing in Lake Braddock's favor.

Finishing in third and fourth behind Lake Braddock were two previously ranked Nike Team Nationals Southeast squads from Alabama in Scottsboro (3rd, 117 pts) and Mountain Brook (4th,118 pts).

SE # 8 - Blacksburg VA (Next Meet: VMI VA 10/14)

After pulling off a grueling double of Great American and Maymont on back to back weekends, Blacksburg coach James Demarco lightened the racing load on his SE #8 girls as they won a low-key local mid-week invite at the Metro Invitational on Thursday afternoon.

The meet was won individually by returning Foot Locker All-American in Catherine White of Northside as the senior cruised to a 18:26 5K win on the flat and fast Green Hill Park 5K course, but Blacksburg's top runner in sophomore Allison Homer was only 13 seconds behind in second at 18:39. Laurel MacMillan (6th, 19:19), Cate Berenato (7th, 19:36), Hannah Barrow (11th, 20:12), and Joanna Stevens (20th, 21:18) completed the team's scoring as they raced on tired legs against a majority of runners, who were off last weekend. Fortunate for the Lady Bruins in their weekend is off for reason as they start to gear up for championship season in which the Virginia 2A state title will be a great battle between them and defending champs and SE #10 Brentsville.

WENDY'S INVITATIONAL

SE # 9 - Chapel Hill NC (Next Meet: 10/14 Tanglewood NC - JV Only)
SE Bubble - Mauldin SC

A banner weekend for South Carolina teams with the Fort Mill boys nearly taking down SE #3 Chapel Hill, while the unranked Mauldin girls (54 pts) not only took down SE #9 Chapel Hill girls (125 pts), but demolished them by a 71 point margin at the Wendy's Invitational in Charlotte.

It was quite a surprise considering Mauldin's dismal 14th place showing only two weekends ago in the Race of Champions at Great American. TC Roberson of North Carolina can attest to the turnaround Mauldin has made as they finished 11th and 38 points ahead in the same race as Maudlin at Great American, yet found themselves a distance third to Mauldin at Wendy's with 152 points.

Quite significant is the time differences between the two teams from Great American to Wendy's with five common runners from Mauldin running at an average of 2:31 faster, while the T.C. Roberson girls were only 1:49 faster. The big question is what was more of the case? Did Mauldin get that much better or did Roberson get that much worse? It appears to be the former as Mauldin also beat a very solid Chapel Hill team, which finished fourth behind three regionally ranked opponents at last Saturday's Maymont Festival.

The fashion in which they beat Chapel Hill was more impressive as it was quite convincing. Mauldin had three runners in before Chapel's first runner in Madison Stark (11th, 18:51) as Coach Delmer Howell's girls had three runners well under 19 minutes for 5K at McAlpine with top ten finishes from junior Alyssa Kulik (3rd, 18:11), freshmen Alexa Neiling (5th, 18:36), and junior Hannah Morgan (8th, 18:48). Rounding out an tough top five all in the top 20 in a competitive field were freshmen Caroline McDonough (18th, 19:04) and Renee Kulik (20th, 19:10). Coach Howell was quite pleased with the team's showing. "I was ecstatic on our performances at Wendy's Invitational. We had such a bad day at Great American, I knew we were much stronger." However, even Coach Howell did not realize his girls were this strong as all of his runners had PR days. Depth could be a concern for the team after five though as their next two finishers were over 21 minutes on a notorious speedway of a cross country course. However, they certainly gained everyone's attention in the region by their showing this weekend.

The Chapel Hill girls had a tough task of coming off a fiercly competitive Maymont race on a challenging course that they likely will not see the type of difficulty again for the rest of the season. They returned in one week to a bit more pleasant course that begs for personal bests at McAlpine and had a solid showing. Chapel Hill junior Madison Stark and senior Becky Johnson (14th, 18:53) led up front with sub 19 minute and top 15 efforts. The remaining top five came not too long after with junior Anna Adams (31st, 19:23), sophomore Kristina Witcher (32nd, 19:24), and senior Adrienne Wollman (37th, 19:34).

SE #10 - Brentsville VA

The Brentsville girls were looking significantly better at Disney as Blacksburg girls certainly cannot sit back and relax with their #1 ranking in Virginia 2A as Coach Rob Dulin's girls are starting to get back into top form. Brentsville (47 pts) beat a solid New Jersey team in Jackson Memorial (76 pts) by 29 point margin, which was led by their ace Amanda Marino in second at 18:34.59 behind Great American runner-up and race winner at Disney in Ashley Brasovan of Wellington High in Florida (17:27.76).

Becky Stewart of Brentsville was the next finisher in the race in 19:09.20 for third place honors and junior Amelia Emerson looked significantly stronger from her Great American race as she closed the gap on Stewart in finishing fourth in a time of 19:24.08. Brentsville sophomore Lauren Bussian gave the Lady Tigers three finishers in the top ten with an eighth place run of 19:59.52. Meanwhile, sophomore Maggie Gentry (17th, 20:38.09) and Sarah Earman (20th, 20:45.62) rounded out the team's scoring with five finishers in the top 20 places.
