The Nike Team Nationals Southeast #1 ranked squad in Midlothian ran well as shown by their low team total of 55 points in the competitive meet, but the NTN SE #6 ranked and two-time defending AA state champions Brentsville proved to be just as good as they finished two points shy of them in second place with 57 points. Midlothian junior Jason Witt took the individual title in a time of 16:03.15.

Saturday was one of many challenges that the Midlothian boys will be facing this season as they come in as the preseason #1 ranked team in Virginia and the Southeast Region for Nike Team Nationals. Their first challenger on Saturday in Brentsville, will be facing them on three more occassions this season. There will be three more close and exciting team battles between two talented teams if Great Meadows was a sign of things to come.

The Trojans of Midlothian were led by one of the state's top returning cross country runners in junior Jason Witt as Witt picked up a big early season victory at Great Meadows in a time of 16:03.15 as he won by 11 seconds. Witt was challenged by Marylander Chris Barnard of Sherwood High School early on, but Barnard fell off pace to end up taking third overall in 16:18.13. Another pre-race individual favorite in Mountain View sophomore Thomas Porter, had an off-day in finishing fifth overall in a time of 16:25.34.

While Midlothian had the front runner in Witt, Brentsville had the front pack in Adam Henken and Henry Melius. Brentsville senior Henken finished as the race runner-up to Witt in a solid time of 16:14.64. Meanwhile, Melius was not too far behind fourth place with a time of 16:24.24 to finish just ahead of Mountain View's Porter.

Midlothian had the next two finishers in junior Mark Merritt (7th, 16:46.09) and senior Jonathan Mellis (16:59.84). Mellis, working his way back into his 2005 AAA All-State shape after missing the entire track season due to injury, ran number three for Midlothian and finished just in front of Brentsville's third runner in Ray Delgado (11th, 17:00.89).

Tommy Reese looked to be Midlothian's most improved runner over the summer as he finished two places and five seconds behind Brentsville's Delgado with a 13th place finishing time of 17:05.50.

Brentsville sophomore Grant Burress and senior Andrew Johnson deserve the same award from their team as their improvements into the number four and five places have been key in making up any foreseen gap between the two teams in the preseason. Burress, who broke 10:20 for 3200 meters as a freshmen last spring, finished 17th in a time of 17:16. Johnson, a former baseball player, cracked the top 25 with his 23rd place run of 17:23.06 to round out Coach Rob Dulin's top five.

If Midlothian junior Thomas Cole finished three more places back and and three seconds slower, Brentsville would have pulled off the upset to open the season. However, Cole finished right off of Brentsville's five man Johnson in 24th place in a time of 17:23.56.

Looking at the numbers more, the teams appear to be even closer. Midlothian's team average for the day as 16:51.58, while Brentsville had an average of 16:51.77. These teams will face off again next weekend on Brentsville's home course in a fun 4x2500 meter relay format at the Brentsville Relays and once again on the following weekend at Great American. The teams will be making an over half day bus ride together from Virginia down to Hoover. Lets hope these two teams that will be going to war against one another this season can call a truce at least for that long haul.

While only two points separated the #1 and #6 ranked teams in NTN Southeast Region in Midlothian and Brentsville, a much larger gap existed between SE #6 Brentsville and SE #7 Hermitage with Hermitage finishing in a distance third with 109 points and one point ahead of defending AAA state champions Oakton (110 points). Not as close of a finish as Coach Joe Pardue would like from his Panthers, but then again it is still early September. Hermitage was led by senior John Vial with a ninth place finishing time of 16:58.24. Hermitage was well packed as only a 38 second spread existed among their top fifth as finishing behind Vial were Nathan Puckett (20th, 17:18.88), Ben Hendrick (21st, 17:20.20), Walter Kidd (28th, 17:31.26), and Kieran Lee (31st, 17:36.89). If Hermitage's pack can stay intact and tight while moving up in future races, they will be a very tough squad to beat.

Oakton is definitely a team on the rise and refusing to let 2006 be a rebuilding year for them as shown by nearly taking down the #7 ranked team in the Southeast Region. Coach Phil Tiller's squad was led by Joe Lorusso with an eight place finish 16:55.34. Rounding out their top five were Matt Saunders (18th, 17:17.78), Alex Nissen (22nd, 17:22.08), Tony Smith (30th, 17:36.27), and Scott Maxfield (32nd, 17:39.16). Oakton will be racing with Brentsville and Midlothian at Great American in the Nike Race of champions in two weeks.

James Wood Invitational

Saturday, September 9th

RESULTS: http://mirror.milesplit.com/meet/results/36925

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #3 - Clarke County VA

While missing one of their top returnees in Daniel Callan, Clarke County still would not have had a chance to be John Handley with their team's probable #3 runner in the lineup as the Judges manhandled Clarke in a small opening meet at James Wood Invitational. John Handley placed three runners ahead of Clarke County's #2 Ben Veilleux (5th, 17:52) with Clint Schiavone (2nd, 17:30), Erin McWhorter (3rd, 17:37), and Daniel Carlton. To add further insult to injury, John Handley's Cameron Crowell (7th, 17:57) and Austin Cote (13th, 18:16) crossed the line ahead of Clarke County's #4 in Joe Racer (18th, 18:24) as their team's #4 and #5 runners to give Handley (29 pts) a 26 point margin of victory over the #3 ranked team in the region Clarke (55 pts). While it is still early in the year, Clarke may have completely dashed any NTN hopes with the opening season upset. Clarke's #3 Callan suffered a broken fibula during the summer and is expected to be back at the earliest in three weeks, if not by October. They will have to make a big turnaround to redeem themselves at Maymont in three weekends.

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #5 - Thomas Jefferson S&T VA
SE #8 - West Springfield VA

The season opener for Northern Region schools in Virginia pitted against two NTN Southeast ranked squads in SE #5 Thomas Jefferson Science & Tech and SE #8 West Springfield. There was no surprise in Thomas Jefferson coming out as the winner by a 35 point margin of victory as their superior depth was shown by placing seven runners ahead of West Springfield's #5.

Thomas Jefferson, who expect to have top runner Brian Landry back in time for mid-season competition, looked dominant at the Monroe Parker Invitational as they nearly put three runners under 16 minutes on the 2.98 mile Burke Lake course with Paul Norland (4th, 15:33), Richard Prevost (5th, 15:51), and James Komen (8th, 16:00). Coach Matt Ryan's #4 was solid as well as Aiden McHugh (15th) finished in the top 15 with his time of 16:20. Ben Treweek finishing 43rd with a time of 16:57 is a little further back than they would like their fifth runner to be, but if Landry comes back that will not matter for Thomas Jefferson. The team has several runners that are in position to step up in the number five spot until then with Treweek, Timmy Galvin (48th, 17:01), and Kevin Brown (54th, 17:07).Thomas Jefferson's depth was also showcased in other races on the day with JV race winner Alex Witko and JV race top 10 finishers Will Clark (4th, 17:23) and Kyle Lamson (6th, 17:28) running faster times than West Springfield's fifth runner.

The Spartans of West Springfield matched up pretty well with Thomas Jefferson through four runners at 32 to 36 in favor of TJ as they were led by race winner and Foot Locker hopeful Mike Spooner in a time of 14:58. Alex Martis (9th, 16:07) and Leo Walker (10th, 16:08) also had strong individual races to finish in the top 10 in the competitive meet, while Loring Ross (16th, 16:22) has definitely stepped it up for Springfield in the #4 spot.

However, the #5 man woes were very glaring for them with Anthony Trueheart finishing a distance 75th place in a time of 17:32.

Both teams will be at the Brentsville Relays next week along with SE #1 Midlothian and SE #6 Brentsville in the 4x2500 meter relay event.

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #10 - Chapel Hill NC

Coach Ron Olsen's crew dedided to compete in a lower profile meet in North Carolina and their dominance showed with seven runners in the top 15 places and a low team score of 24 points. It was the 19th year in a row that Chapel Hill has attended that meet that is a fairly challenging course with the boys course record at 16:11. Chapel Hill was led by race champion and sophomore Taylor Gilland, who posted one of the faster course times ever in 16:22 and teammate Miles Rampel was not far behind as race runner-up in 16:40. Rounding out the top five for Chapel Hill were Jack Marshall (5th, 17:05), Peter Anderson (7th, 17:11), and Kent Pecora (9th, 17:22). Chapel Hill competes next on the course that helped lift them to Nike Team Nationals last fall at the former venue of Great American at SAS Park in Cary, North Carolina for the adidas Invitational.

Carrolton Invitational

Saturday, September 9th
Georgia State Meet Course - 5K
Carollton, GA

RESULTS: http://mirror.milesplit.com/meet/results/36945

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE Bubble - Chiles FL
SE Bubble - Parkview GA

Florida definitely has a NTN caliber squad in Chiles as shown by their victory at the Carrolton Invitational as they went up against some of the better teams in Georgia on the same course used for the state meet. Chiles (75 pts) won by 20 point margin over Lassiter of Georgia (95), while possibly Georgia's top team in Parkview finished a distance third with 136 points, but was missing their #2 and #3 runners on Saturday.

Chiles got it done without a true front runner, but with an amazingly tight pack with only 28 seconds separating first finisher Calvin Vannoy (9th, 16:38.67) from #5 Chris Renneker (25th, 17:06.74). Chiles was also missing one of their probable top five runners in Kevin Lane, who will start back up running again this week after four weeks in the pool. Chiles's team average of 16:49 was five seconds faster than their team performance in 2005 when they had a front runner in Jonathan Blocker (15:56) to bring down the average.

The competition would have definitely been a lot closer and interesting if Parkview was racing at full strength as they opened the season on a roll with a victory over SE #9 Walton GA in a two mile stage race and came one point shy of knocking off SE #4 Smiths Station AL. However, with #2 runner Marcelis Lynch and #3 runner Josh Pinson sitting out of the meet, Parkview was stuck at a major disadvantage being a squad that is not incredibly deep outside of their regular top five. Michael Winston led the team with a fourth place finishing run of 16:04.14. #4 man Brett Richardson finished 10th overall and right behind Chiles #1 Vannoy. Insert Lynch and Pinson in front of Richardson in their usual place order, Parkview would appear to have the advantage having four in before one.

Both teams will face off again at Great American in two weeks in which Coach Tigue at Parkview will hope that resting his two runners this weekend will pay off that weekend. Chiles is clearly the deeper squad past five as shown with seven runners ahead of Parkview's #5 on Saturday, but Parkview's front runner in Winston and getting Lynch and Pinson back will make them tough to beat.

Lassiter also had a solid meet taking second behind Chiles with a strong front runner in Zack Flickinger (5th, 16:04.51). Both Drew Jones (12th, 16:43.36) and Thomas Anderson (17th, 16:54.41) dipped under 17 minutes on the day, while Joe Fulton (28th, 17:10.86) and Chris Perry (33rd, 17:21.39) rounded out the top five.

Fork Union Invitational

Saturday, September 9th
Hardy National Course - 3mi
Fork Union, VA

RESULTS: http://mirror.milesplit.com/meet/results/36814

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE Bubble - Fork Union VA
SE Bubble - Western Albemarle VA

Fork Union boys won their second big invite of the week over one of AA's top programs in Western Albemarle at the Fork Union Invitational. Coach Winston Brown's squad awarded him with an early 41 year old birthday present (turns 41 on Sunday) with their Fork Union Invite championship ever.

The Blue Devils were led by race winner Axel Mostrag, who covered the Hardy National 3 mile course in 15:39 as he held off a strong challenge to the end from Manchester's Andrew Duty (15:40). Fork Union had four more finishers in the top 22 places with Szymon Rola (5th, 15:49), Jeremy Haney (9th, 16:00), David Johnson (12th, 16:14), and Jamie Reichlen (22nd, 16:47) to finish with a team score of 49 points as Western Albemarle took second with 77 points and gave FUMA a stronger challenge the second time around, especially in the early and mid-stages of the race.

Western Albemarle looked to have the advantage over Fork Union early on in front of the Fork Union runners and the teams looked to be very close as the runners emerged from the wooded trail with less than a mile left in the race. However, Fork Union had several runners move up places on the final loop as Rola ended up passing Western Albemarle's top finisher Kyle Satterwhite (6th, 15:50.30) to put two runners ahead of their Central Virginia rival's front runner.

However, it was fourth and fifth runners David Johnson and Jamie Reichlen that made the biggest difference and helped to create a larger gap of victory as Johnson passed two Warriors in the final loop in Will Massie (14th, 16:19.37) and James Howard-Smith (16th, 16:26.23). After Johnson's strong finish, Western Albemarle was stuck in a tough bind with four FUMA runners ahead of their second runner in Massie. However, hope still existed with their depth as they had six ahead of Fork Union's fifth in Reichlen as they came out of the woods, but Reichlen ended up picking off a Western pair in Henry Loehr (23rd, 16:49.92) and John Conroy (24th, 16:51.42) to give FUMA a decisive win through positions one through five.

After a clearer picture has been painted from the opening season results for the top Virginia schools, it appears that a group of four schools in Midlothian, Brentsville, Thomas Jefferson, and Fork Union have separated themselves from the rest. Three of the four will meet at Maymont in three weeks in Brentsville, Thomas Jefferson, and Fork Union and with all three being in difference classifications with 2A Brentsville, 3A Thomas Jefferson, and Independent Fork Union, the meet will have even larger NTN importance.

SE Bubble - Hoover AL

The Hoover boys had a great opener at the Mobile Cross country Challenge of Champions as they won with a team score of 42 points and were led to the line by the race's top two finishers in Timothy Landry (1st, 16:07.89) and Patrick McGregor (2nd, 16:17.87). While a minute gap existed after their second runner until #3 Joel Rogers finished in 13th with a time of 17:18.14, the rest of the team soon followed with Justin Rogers (16th, 17:22.91), Nick Perkins (18th, 17:27.89), and Alec Hamm (20th, 17:30.11). Hoover actually was a lot stronger up front during the race as their #3 in Ben Wills was running behind McGregor at two miles, but had to drop out due to a calf problem. Coach Devon Hind is going to give him extra rest to make sure he is ready in two weeks for the big one at Great American.

SE #4 Smiths Station AL boys will be getting a tough test for state surpremacy at Great American in two weeks as the hometown team in Hoover will not only be looking to knock off Smiths Station, but many of the other teams in the region to dip deep into the regional rankings.

SE Bubble - Broughton NC
SE Bubble - Pinecrest NC
SE Bubble - Enloe NC

While Chapel Hill was competing in a fairly low key meet in Durham, many of the North Carolina's best teams and individuals gathered to compete at the Seahawk Invitational at UNC-Wilmington as a great team battle between Broughton, Pinecrest, and Enloe came out of it.

Pinecrest last year's state runner-up to Chapel Hill, came out with an impressive opener last weekend at the Jungle Run and looked to be the favorite coming into this weekend's invite. However, Broughton had different plans as their team score of 99 points put them just ahead of Pinecrest (107 pts) and Enlone (109 pts).

Broughton was led by two top five finishers on the fast and flat 5K course in Sam Mordecai (2nd, 15:53.53) and Logan Roberts (16:16.20). Finishing out the top five for them were Burk Stabu (22nd, 17:03.76), Cheyenne Hite (28th, 17:10.62), and Greg Randolph (42nd, 17:28.62).

Pinecrest and the rest of the field was led to the line by race champion Andy Wacker as he posted a swift time of 15:21.98 to win by over 30 seconds. Brett Baggett (11th, 16:40.52) also finished in the top 15 for Pinecrest as the remaining top five for Pinecrest included Mark Moon (23rd, 17:04.66), Andrew Garrison (33rd, 17:17.75), and Blake Smith (39th, 17:25.29).

Enloe also had a fine showing in third and two points behind Pinecrest with three runners in the top 15 in Nick Carter (8th, 16:38.26), Nick Graw (10th, 16:40.03), and Peter Kerkhof (15th, 16:56.87).

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #3 - Midlothian VA
SE #5 - Brentsville VA
SE #8 - Morgantown WV

The SE #3 Midlothian VA girls had two of their seven runners drop out of the race including top returnee and 4:53 miler M.C. Miller yet their amazing depth and talent was showcased still in dominating the #2 ranked team in the state and #5 ranked team in the NTN Southeast region in Brentsville VA by a 65 point margin of victory. The Lady Trojans were led by the Lautzenheiser twins, Kathleen (1st, 19:20.92) and Leia (3rd, 19:46.59), as the freshmen pair finished first and third respectively.

Many knew the Lautzenheiser twins were going to be good and key contributors to Midlothian's NTN run this fall, but how good was the big question. They certainly answered a lot in their first high school invitational race with Kathleen Lautzenheiser defeating a strong field with some of the state's better runners in a 19:20.92 on a hot and humid day, while twin sister Leia gave Midlothian two of the top three finishers with a third place time of 19:46.59.

Their races turned out to be very critical as two of Midlothian's runners in senior M.C. Miller and junior Erin Stehle dropped out of the race midway, so all five remaining runners in the race for Midlothian needed to finish in order for the team to score. Big races were needed especially with Miller dropping out as she was projected as the team's number one runner heading into this season after running 4:53 for 1600 meters last spring as a AAA state runner-up

Christine Selander certainly finished strong for Midlothian as none of the Lady Trojans' top three finishers on Saturday were members of the 2005 AAA state champion squad as the junior Selander missed the entire 2005 cross country season with a stress facture. Selander ended up finishing eighth overall in a time of 20:18.49.

There were only two finishers for Midlothian from the state champion team in the "A" race with junior Sammy Dow (12th, 20:36.56) and sophomore Paige Johnston (22nd, 21:09.71) finishing fourth and fifth for the team to allow for a team score of 46 points. Neither returnee had the best of races as both are coming off minor summer training injuries, but will be working into top shape as the season progresses.

Despite having two of their top runners drop out and have two other top returnees have subpar days, Midlothian still proved why they are one of the top ranked teams in the Southeast region and nation coming into this season as they defeated two Nike Team Nationals Southeast ranked squads in SE #5 Brentsville (2nd, 111 pts) and SE #8 Morgantown (3rd, 127 pts) of West Virginia by significant margins.

Neither Brentsville nor Morgantown were racing at full strength though. Brentsville was missing two of their top four runners in Maggie Gentry and Amelia Emerson and certainly would have decreased Midlothian's margin of victory with them in the lineup.

Brentsville was led by senior Becky Stewart as the early race leader settled for second behind Midlothian's Kathleen Lautzenheiser in a solid individual opening race of 19:24.45 to finish four seconds off the race winner. Teammate Lauren Bussian joined her in the top ten with a 10th place finishing time of 20:25.68.

Coach Dulin's next three finishers came in a row with Stephanie Hutson (33rd, 21:21.79), Sam Woodard (34th, 21:22.55), and Sarah Earman (35th, 21:27.32).

If Brentsville can get Gentry and Emerson back in time for Great American, their squad should fair very well there.

Morgantown had been missing two of their top five runners heading into Great Meadows this season in Emma Berry and Cari Shaffer as the two had been healing from injuries. Morgantown was definitely improved with their additions, but Berry and Shaffer still are not fully back as they finished together in 46th (21:58.91) and 47th (22:05.36) respectively.

Finishing in pairs was a theme for Morgantown as their strong front two in Allison Pettit and Monica Chase took fifth (19:57.25) and sixth (19:58.54) place to lead Coach John Patti's squad against the tough Virginia competition. Another Morgantown tandem in Ahna Lewis (36th, 21:29.85) and Aubrey Moskal (37th, 21:32.46) ran in the number three and four positions for the #8 ranked team in the Southeast.

Katie Caples Invitational

FEATURED TEAMS:

SE #4 - Episcopal FL

Coach Michelle Krueger's girls from Episcopal came out on their opening race at the Katie Caples Invitational with something to prove. After making it to Nike Team Nationals last year and returning everyone from a squad that fared well in Oregon with a 14th place finish, the Episcopal girls found themselves ranked fourth in the Southeast region this preseason behind two teams that did not make the trip to Portland last year in Tatnall of Delaware and Midlothian of Virginia. Many in Florida were outraged by the ranking, but the Episcopal girls let their feet do the talking for them at the Katie Caples Invitational.

Running on a soggy course on a humid day, the girls from Jacksonville scored a perfect 15 in the meet as they beat some traditionally strong Florida programs in Lady of Lourdes (2nd, 106 pts) and Bolles (3rd, 111 pts) quite soundly with the perfect sweep. Episcopal was led by race champion and junior Laura Steel in a time of 19:09. The rest of her team was not too far behind in an impressive 12 second spread for their front five with junior Maggie Traylor (2nd, 19:10), freshmen Katie Traylor (3rd, 19:13), freshmen Leslie Blackshear (4th, 19:19), and senior Hadley Ferguson (5th, 19:21). Rounding out their top seven were seventh grader Christine Griggs (11th, 20:07) and sophomore Brooke Hardington (25th, 20:48).

Their times were very impressive when you compare them to their 2005 team performance at Katie Caples when their top finisher and race winner Emily Ingham crossed the line in 19:21, which is a time their #5 ran in this year's race. Also brings up another scary fact in that Ingham is missing from their lineup currently as the senior missed the majority of the track season with injury. If Ingham is able to return and at top shape, Episcopal is going to be even tougher to beat.

Considering one of the teams that moved ahead of Episcopal in the preseason in SE #3 Midlothian had nearly a minute gap in their opener race between their #1 and #3 runner, Episcopal right now looks like a Nike Team Nationals bound team once again.

Tupelo (47 pts) finished ten points ahead of Scottsboro (57 pts) as they overcame strong front running from the Scottsboro duo of Emily Thompson (3rd, 18:59.18) and Lacey Wright (5th, 19:16.97) with a tighter pack to come out of Alabama with the win.
