TEARING IT UP IN L.A.
(LOWER ALABAMA,THAT IS)

By Arthur L. Mack

GULF SHORES, ALA. - History was made when the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 4A-6A state outdoor championships were held in the southwestern part of the state for the first time ever—and while teams from the northern part of the state had to travel for a change, it did not take away from the competitive performances.

A blazing 10 minute, 41.41 second win in the 6A girls’ 3,200 run by Sparkman freshman Katie Huston was one of the big highlights of the meet. In addition, there were three javelin records broken in the first day of action, and all the javelin records in every classification were broken.

Mobile’s St. Paul’s Episcopal showed sweeping the 2006 5A outdoor titles was no fluke as it used strong performances to sweep both titles again this year. The St. Paul’s girls jumped out to a big lead in the first day of competition and never looked back as they routed Scottsboro 195-113, with UMS-Wright a distant third with 64 points.  St. Paul’s Mary Carleton Johnston was the leading factor, as she won three individual titles—the 800 in 2 minutes, 18.61 seconds, the 3,200 in 11:13.91, and the 1,600 in 5:11.66. In addition, she anchored the winning 4 X 800 meter relay team, which ran 9:55.12.   The St. Paul’s boys, on the other hand, had a slightly tougher battle, but in the end, had enough depth and balance to outlast Scottsboro 121.50 to 104, while Mobile’s UMS-Wright was third with 51. Lee Gilmer led the charge for the Saints as he, like Johnston, won the 800, 1,600, and 3,200-meter races. Gilmer’s times were 1:58.46, 4:25.72, and 9:48.71 respectively.

Hoover was hoping to use its distance strength to take the boys’ 6A crown, but Opelika would have none of it. The Bulldogs garnered 40 points in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and got double wins from Rodney Johnson in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.45) and 300-meter hurdles (38.42), all in the second day of competition to rout the Bucs 103-66, with Oak Mountain third with 49.

Despite a strong 48.18 in the 4 X 100 meter relay, and impressive wins from Shawn Crawford in the 200 (24.62), and long jump (18-2 ¼), Smiths Station came up 10 points short as Mountain Brook piled up points from the 400-meters up to hold off the Lady Panthers 96-86, with Oak Mountain third with 61.50.

Guntersville relied on wins in the 4 X 100 (50.12) and 4 X 400 (4:15.26), along with a lot of seconds, thirds, and fourths in other events to outlast Dadeville 84-59 in 4A girls, with Central-Tuscaloosa third with 58. And Jacksonville capped off a wild day in 4A boys’ competition, winning four first places—including an exciting 4 X 400 meter relay race, to edge favored Beauregard 68.50 to 65.50. Guntersville was third with 56 points.

Here is a recap of the two-day meet:

Day 1

Four records were broken on day one of the competition, but none was as impressive as Sparkman freshman Katie Huston’s win in the 6A girls’ 3200-meter run.  Huston came into the race as one of the favorites, along with Decatur Austin’s Jennifer Dunn. Both had very impressive credentials, and seemed capable of breaking Vestavia Hills’ great Laurel Pritchard’s record of 10 minutes, 52.01 seconds, set just last year.

No one, though, had any idea that Pritchard’s mark, impressive as it was, would be broken in such a dominating fashion, as Huston, Dunn, and Mountain Brook’s Madeline Morgan surged to the front during a light rain. The pace was fast—so fast, in fact, that the three broke away from the rest of the field after the second lap.

Huston hung with Dunn, with Morgan not far behind. Huston, though, made her move with about 200 meters to go and outkicked Dunn for the win. Dunn was also under the old record with a 10:43.02 clocking, while Morgan held on for third in 10:53.67.

“When it started sprinkling during the race, I felt pretty good,” Huston said. “I’m excited about winning, and I knew it would come down to a kick.”

In the girls’ 6A javelin, Angela McCord of Mobile’s McGill-Toolen broke her 2005 meet record of 127 feet, 7 inches by almost three feet with a 130-0 throw. McCord could not be faulted for wanting to throw even further—after all, she was also competing in the pole vault and the discus. In fact, she was competing in the javelin and pole vault at almost the same time.

“I thought I had an off season this year (in the javelin) because I also love the pole vault,” McCord said. “We had a good wind, but it was kind of humid. Still, I can’t complain.”

Spain Park’s Trevor Denkers set a new 6A boys’ javelin mark (187-5), while Katie Bright of Montgomery’s St. James broke the 4A girls’ mark with a 119-9 effort.

The 6A 800-meter races were anticipated as almost sure wins for Mountain Brook’s Catherine Diethelm and Smiths Stations’ Chris Bilbrew. But a couple of other highly regarded athletes stole the show.

Oak Mountain’s Marissa Brokaw, who more often than not ran in the shadow of Diethelm and her Mountain Brook teammate Marie Demedicis, stole the show with a narrow win in the 6A girls 800, edging Diethelm 2:16:36 to2:16.51, while Demedicis was third in 2:16.61

The 6A boys’ 800 was just as exciting, with Bilbrew poised to take a state title as he did indoors in February. But Mountain Brook’s Jake Stephens would have a say in the matter, as he narrowly edged Bilbrew 1:54.14 to 1:54.26.
Meanwhile, in 5A competition, the St. Paul’s express was cranking up big time. Johnston and Gilmer got double victories in the 800 and 3200, while Mark Barron, a St. Paul’s football star and Mr. Everything for the Saints’ track team, devastated the field with a personal best of 46-1½ to win the triple jump, and Tyler Kennedy won the discus (147-1).

St. Paul’s went 1-2 in three events on the girls’ side. In the shot, Angelica Howard and Johnnie Borries had tosses of 38-11 ¾ and 35-10 ¼ respectively; Howard also won the discus (110-5) and Austin was second (108-1); and Neal Tisher and Borries were 1-2 in the 300-meter hurdles (45.24 and 46.75).

“We had a good first day and had several outstanding performances,” said St. Paul’s coach Jim Tate.

Kayla Stewart helped give Guntersville an early lead with her win in the 300-meter hurdles (47.18). Along with Whitney Avery’s second-place finish in the triple jump (35-2), Guntersville led Brooks 31-26.

Beauregard took a 23-21 lead over Jacksonville in the first day of boys’ 4A competition, thanks in part to Matthew Perrella’s second-place finish in the 3,200 (10:12.69) and a third place finish in the long jump by E. Helm (20-10 ½).

There were other noteworthy performances in day one of the competition:

Foley’s Julio Jones, one of the nation’s top prep football prospects, came off a disappointing fourth place finish in the high jump (6-4) and won the long jump with a 23-8 ½ effort.

“I was down a little bit after the high jump because I’ve been bothered with a hamstring problem, he said later. “It was a rough start, and I just wanted to get one good jump in the long jump. I don’t even know if I’m going to triple jump tomorrow.”

Oak Mountain’s James Adair won the 6A boys’ 3,200 with a time of 9:36.44, defeating Hoover’s Tim Landry, who ran 9:40.06.

Charles Henderson’s Harrison Bryant won the 5A boys’ 300-meter hurdles in 38.71.

Ashville’s Logan Cornutt won the 4A boys’ 800 in 1:58.94.

Mobile’s UMS-Wright’s Conrad Blunck won a highly competitive 5A pole vault, defeating St.Paul’s Whit Gruenewald 13-9 to 13-6.

Erika Adams of Bob Jones won the 6A girls’ triple jump (37-4 ½).

Day 2

Day 2 of the competition was a stark contrast to the previous day’s competition. Instead of rain, there were partly cloudy skies and very warm weather. But action heated up on the track—and in the javelin competition.

Johnston and Gilmer took up where they left off the previous day with impressive victories in their 1,600-meter races. Johnston won the 5A girls’ race in 5:11.66 over Scottsboro’s Emily Thompson (5:14.60) in windy conditions that required smart race strategy.

“I went slower than I wanted to, but I was able to pick it up after the first half,” Johnston said after the win.

Gilmer had to contend with an early challenge from UMS-Wright’s John Robert Taylor in the 5A boys’ 1,600, but broke away from the field and blistered the competition enroute to a 4:25.72 win.

"I’m running on fumes right now,” Gilmer said later. “The pace, though, was pretty much what I wanted. Under the circumstances, it was the best I could have done.”

As with day one, javelin records fell left and right—and Johnston’s teammate Austin, had the biggest throw of all.  Austin had been throwing in the 140-145 foot range, and was looking forward to having a big throw in the competition. Borries, an all-around athlete, was also hoping to have a big day in the javelin as well.  On her fourth attempt, Austin put everything together and launched a 150-2 throw—which was not only a 5A state record, but a record for all classifications. Afterwards, Austin, who is preparing to sign with the University of Alabama, said that the record throw was a dream come true.

“Everything just clicked,” she said. “My technique and speed were good, and when I threw it, I thought it was in the 145-foot range.”

Things also clicked for Scottsboro’s Tyler Hamlet, who set a meet record in the 5A boys’ javelin (190-10) and Dadeville’s Kevin Keyes, who broke the 4A boys’ state meet javelin record with a throw of 172-11.

Borries—who finished second to Austin in the javelin with a throw of 116-0, came back moments later and came back with a win of her own in the 100-meter hurdles, edging Tisher, her teammate. Borries ran 14.92 and Tisher ran 14.94. Later, Borries said that having Tisher as a teammate helped her when it came to competition.

“It’s awesome to have a teammate like that who really pushes you,” she said.

Awesome, too, was Opelika’s emergence in the sprints on day two. The Bulldogs broke out of the box with a resounding win in the 4 X 100 meter relay over Mobile’s Murphy (42.02 to 42.82), and then got a big win from Tony McLeod in the 100 (10.77), who narrowly defeated Homewood’s Ladarius Woods (10.78).

A 1-3-4 finish in the 200 by Arsenio Adams (21.87), Marquez Strickland (21.91) and McLeod (22.10) sealed the deal for Opelika, and gave the Bulldogs their seventh 6A title in 10 years.

“That’s been our meat and potatoes all season long,” said Opelika coach Bill McManus. “We have three good young men who are the rock of our track team. Arsenio came on in the last couple of weeks, and Tony has been doing a great job for us for the last four years.

Mountain Brook kept pounding away in the 6A girls competition, getting a big first place finish in the high jump from Alexandra Morgan (5-6), and big wins in the 4 X 800 meter relay (9:33.28) and 4 X 400 meter relay (3:58.78). That was more than enough to offset the efforts of Crawford, whose twin victories in the long jump and 200 put the Panthers in contention.

“Smiths Station did what they had to do in order to win,” said Smiths’ Station coach Donna Ferguson. “Shan had a great meet, but we have a really young team.”

Guntersville had already secured the girls’ 4A crown, but there was still excitement in the 4A boys’ competition.

Jacksonville, though, had to had some huge performances in order to win, and it got them—Ian Nelson won the 1,600
(4:35.66), Helm won the triple jump (45-2¾), and Ken McKinley in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.30). Jacksonville also got a thrilling win in the 4 X 400 meter relay, holding off Ashville 3:32.93 to 3:32.98.

There were many other thrilling performances as well:

Jones, the football star, decided to go ahead and give the triple jump a try after dealing with a tweaked hamstring in winning the 6A boys’ long jump. After taking a safety jump on his first attempt, he let it all hang out in round four and leaped a personal best of 49-1 to win by nearly four feet.

“I had my hamstring worked on and it didn’t bother me today,” said Jones. “I just wanted to get a jump in so I could make the finals and then try to go all out.”

Smiths Stations’ boys cruised to victory in the 6A boys’ 4 X 800 meter relay, running 7:52.98 to win by 11 seconds over Oak Mountain.

Adair and Brokaw continued to work their distance magic, as the Oak Mountain duo won their respective 6A 1,600-meter races. Once again, Adair held off Landry to win in 4:24.88, while Brokaw cracked the five-minute mark in the girls’ 1,600, winning in 4:59.73.

Shades Valley’s Morganne Phillips won the 6A girls’ 400 in 56.98.

Bryant, the Charles Henderson star, added a 110-meter victory (14.44) to go along with his 5A 300-hurdle crown.

In 4A girls’ competition, Madison County’s Rebecca Hilt and Escambia County’s Kiara Henry had double victories—Hilt won the 200 (26.11) and 400 (59.38), and Henry won the 100 (12.42) and the long jump (17-3).

Carver-Montgomery’s Chasity Riggien won the 6A girls’ 100-meter dash in 11.98.

Vestavia Hills’ Will Henley won a tough 6A boys’ pole vault competition, defeating Oak Mountain’s Zac Epperson and Mountain Brook’s Chuck Crowther. All three cleared 14-6, but Henley won on fewer misses.
