DyeStat XC Region Review SE

Summary of Southeast Top Ten, Week Ending Sept. 8, 2007

By Brett Honeycutt, Dyestat SE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

BOYS

1. MIDLOTHIAN (VA)
Midlothian might struggle early on against top competition after losing its No. 2 runner from last year to transfer and because its No. 3 runner from last year has a stress fracture.
At the Great Meadow Invitational (The Plains, VA), Midlothian placed 4th in a top-heavy meet with four preseason regionally ranked schools. Midlothian scored 114 points and had a 16:39 average, behind a very strong Oakton team, which is the SE No. 9 team and won with 57 points (16:31 average). SE No. 8 Jamestown was second (90 pts, 16:36 avg.) and SE No. 4 Mountain View was third (104 pts, 16:41 avg.).

1 Witt, Jason JR Midlothian 15:38.01
8 Burleigh, Brayden FR Midlothian 16:23.79
15 Hammond, Michael JR Midlothian 16:33.64
46 Barlow, Darren FR Midlothian 17:17.63
53 Sparks, Hunter JR Midlothian 17:26.73 50
78 Rogers, Michael SO Midlothian 18:01.39

2. PARKVIEW (GA)
Like Midlothian, might struggle early on. They lost Michael Winston to graduation and the other major contributor to all three of the last three state championships, Marcelis Lynch, decided to play football this year.

At the Clara Bowl Invitational, they finished third behind Hoover of Alabama and Baylor of Tennesssee. Both of those teams had entiree top five in front of Parkview's third. Parkview's third and frouth runners are getting back into shape but it may take the whole season to do so. They are still looking for a fifth man to step up and close the gap.
At the Carrollton Invitational, Parkview finsihed second behind Collins Hill. Parkview's 1-4 guys ran well but not having a fifth man hurt. Rival Brookwood split their team into the two races (championship and varsity) and would have easily won the race if they would have run entire team in one race.

3. QUINCE ORCHARD (MD)
Easily won the Peter Geraghty Invitational at Mount St. Mary's, 69-117 over St. Alban's School (DC) with a pretty off day. It was the team's first big meet after running a relay meet on Tuesday at Georgetown Prep. Neal Darmody won the Peter Geraghty easily, beating Dante Morales of Fairfax, 16:16 to 16:47.

1 Darmody, Neal 12 Quince Orchard 16:16.25

4. MOUNTAIN VIEW (VA)
Mountain View started off the season with a loaded schedule. Its first two meets came against Southeast Regional schools.

Finished third at the Great Meadow Invitational (The Plains, VA) with 104 points and a 16:41 average, behind Oakton (first, 57, 16:31 avg.) and SE No. 8 Jamestown (second, 90 pts, 16:36 avg.). Mountain View beat SE No. 1 Midlothian (fourth, 114 pts, 16:39 avg.).

3 Porter, Thomas So. 15:42.27
18 Brown, Alex Jr. 16:42.37
25 Porter, Daniel Jr. 16:53.68
31 Brown, Chris Jr. 17:01.75
39 Henry, Stephen Jr. 17:07.29 36
43 Wisniewski, Tim So. 17:11.79

At the Chancellor Invitational in Fredricksburg, VA, No. 8 Jamestown won with 54 points and averaged 17:16.66 to beat No. 4 Mountain View (67 points, 17:38 avg.). Daniel Porter led Mountain View with a 9th place finish (17:25).

Others:
11 Brown, Alex 17:30.50
13 Henry, Stephen 17:43.13
15 Brown, Chris 17:44.62
19 Wisniewski, Tim 17:47.47

5. WALTON (GA)
Walton easily beat Etowah, 36-99, to win the 26-team Cherokee Warpath Invitational. Conditions: 87 degrees, hot/humid and course was flat with gravel, dust and grass.

Top seven Boys
Mark Viglotti -12 1st 16:37
Thomas Pilliod-12 5th 16:44
Will Bryfczynski-11 8th 16:53
Daniel Heller-12 10th 16:53
Philip Laskey-10 12th 17:00
Adam Joseph-11 23rd 17:27
Nathan Gordon-12 37th 17:47

Two weeks prior to winning the invitational, Walton finished second to Collins Hill in the Walton Stage Races without its No. 2 runner. The format is 5 2mile races, scoring your 1st person in each stage. In this format Collins Hill was able to beat Walton, but Walton had 6 times better than Collins Hill's 4th time even without Walton's second man running (so likely would have had seven times better than Collins Hill's fourth).

6. OAK RIDGE (TN)
Have only run a dual meet (Two Miler) with Maryville at Maryville College this past Saturday (Oak Ridge won 22-33) and did it without No. 1 runner (Chris Cole: 4:23/1:57 runner) because of injury. He is generally recovered from the injury (plantar fasciitis) but will not debut until Sept. 22 meet at McCallie. The course was somewhat rough after a quick first mile--became rocky and uneven. Temps were nice, though.
(2 mile course)

1 O'Donnell, Maclean 10:00
3 Peacock, Emerson 10:23
4 Phil Riemer 10:36

11 John Sharpe 10:55
12 Aaron Oswald 11:08

7. CHAPEL HILL (NC)
Came back to win the eight-team Durham Academy Invitational fairly easy after placing third at the WNC Carnival, the most competitive early-season meet in North Carolina because it attracts most of the top-ranked schools from each classification. At Durham Academy, Chapel Hill beat the host 22-90.

1. Gilland, Taylor - CH (1) 16:00.00 (course record by 11 seconds)
2. Marshall, Jack - CH (2) 16:55.00
4. Anderson, Peter - CH (4) 17:11.00
6. Bunch, Will - CH (6) 17:19.00
9. Sutter, Scott - CH (9) 17:38.00
10. Hoerger, Jacob - CH (10) 17:44.00
11. Sutter, Wes - CH (11) 17:49.00

At the WNC Carnival, running without its No. 2 runner, Chapel Hill placed third with 118 points behind 3A Mooresville and 1A Owen. Likely will get stronger as the season moves forward because they are running three sophomores who have never run varsity and a junior and senior who have never run varsity.

Taylor Gilland 2nd in 15:27.3
Peter Anderson was 11th(16:55)
Jacob Hoerger-34th, 17:47
Alex Marcheschi, 41st, 17:56

8. JAMESTOWN (VA)

Jamestown finished second at the Great Meadow Invitational with 90 points and 16:31 average, behind Oakton (first, 57, 16:31 avg.). Jamestown beat SE No. 1 Midlothian (fourth, 114 pts, 16:39 avg.), and No. 4 Mountain View (third, 104 pts, 16:41 avg.).

At the Chancellor Invitational, Jamestown won with 54 points and averaged 17:16.66 to beat No. 4 Mountain View (67 points, 17:38 avg.), with Andrew Colley (16:31) and John Holt (16:46) leading the way by taking second and third.

20 Schlickenmeyer, Gr 17:48.23 20
21 Hornsby, Russell 17:54.82 21

9. OAKTON (VA)
Several SE coaches have said this team is strong and it's easy to see why after they won easily against four regionally-ranked schools in the Southeast. Head coach Phil Tiller said six of his runners have cracked 10 minutes in the 3,200 (9:30-9:41-9:49-9:53-9:53-9:57) and has some great depth with another three runners who have run between 10:30-10:45.  Won the Great Meadow Invitational with 57 points and had a 16:31 average to beat SE No. 1 Midlothian (fourth, 114, 16:39), SE No. 4 Mountain View (third, 104, 16:41) and SE No. 8 Jamestown (second, 90, 16:36).

Bubble Teams

Hoover, AL, Baylor, TN, Western Albemarle, VA and Mooresville, NC

HOOVER (AL)

Started off season strong with key win against No. 2 Parkview, GA and Baylor, TN (by 2 points) at the Clara Bowl Invitational before winning easily at Chickasaw Trails.
Hoover won the Chickasaw Trails easily with 47 points (16:42 average) to Mountain Brook's 97 points. An observer said it was basically the Alabama state meet minus Auburn and Smith's Station, which was beaten handily by both the week before at the Clara Bowl.

1 McGregor, Pat JR Hoover 15:56.33
7 Perkins, Nick JR Hoover 16:31.86
8 Hayes, Nicholas SR Hoover 16:39.36
12 Rogers, Justin SR Hoover 17:04.36
19 Hamm, Alec SR Hoover 17:20.14

6 ( 65) Joel Rogers 17:33
7 ( 77) Justin Rogers 17:39

BAYLOR (TN)
At the Clara Bowl Invitational, beat No. 2 Parkview and barely lost to Hoover (AL). The following week, Baylor held out its No. 2, 5 and 8 runners because of two keey meets on the horizon (Tennesse Classic and McCallie Invite).

At the UTC meet, held out 2,5, and 8 guys. Bill Matthews won the race by sitting in for the first mile and then tempo-running for a 30 second win (16:04) on a 3.18 mile course. Coach Van Townsend clocked Matthews at 15:38 at the 5k mark. Without the big guns, they were 4th after a strong first meet. Again, with a full team, this team is dangerous. Morristown West won the Chattanooga meet with 49 points, Father Ryan was second (97), Farragut third (121) and Baylor fourth (148) of 18 schools.

Bill Matthews 16:07
Colton Popp 16:57

Chase Martin, 26th, 17:28

At the WNC Carnival earlier this season, beat SE No. 7 Chapel Hill easily (CH was without No. 2 runner, but Chapel Hill would still have lost had he been figured into the scoring). Mooresville scored 50 to Owen's 113 and Chapel Hill's 118.

4. LAKE BRADDOCK (VA)
At the Monroe Parker Invitational at Burke Lake Park (Burke, VA), Lake Braddock looked incredible even without its No. 1 runner, who was held out. 6. MOUNTAIN BROOK (AL)
One coach said this team was the most impressive, boys or girls, at the Clara Bowl Invitational, which had several highly-regarded teams from the Southeast.

Mountain Brook beat Hoover 18-125 at the Clara Bowl Inv. (averaging 19:19 per runner), then came back and won the Chickasaw Trails race at Oakville Indian Mounds Park, also beating Hoover, this time 27-79 (and averaged 19:12). Even more impressive at the Chickasaw Trails race was that Mountain Brook put 10 in the top 24.
At Chickasaw, Mountain Brook won the 5-6A race and would have easily won the 1-4A race (Mountain Brook had five runners with better times than Corinth's second runner and Corinth averaged 21:32 to win that race. Corinth front-runner Katlyn Will ran 18:45, though, and won by nearly a minute. Would have been nice for her and Madeline Morgan to run in the same race.)

They did compete in a 5K/10-miler in Dewey Beach, DE over the weekend. Both races were informal and in training shoes, but the team still looked strong. In the 10 mile race, Juliet Bottorff ran a state record of 66:36. THREE OTHER girls ran under 75 minutes.  In the othe race, Katie Oldham (20:05), Katie Buenaga (20:26), Lauren Blackwell (20:29) and Carly Simmons (20:59) competed in the 5K and will likely be in the top group this year, as well.
