UMS-WRIGHT’S GIRLS, ST. PAUL’S BOYS WIN GREAT MUDDY CLASSIC

St. Paul’s Mary Carleton Johnston and Lee Gilmer score resounding wins in individual races

By Arthur Mack

MOBILE, ALA.----Call it a case of intense rivalry, if you will, but the 14th annual edition of the Great Muddy Classic, held at Mobile’s Medal of Honor Park, basically turned into a two-team affair in the varsity divisions.

UMS-Wright and St. Paul’s dominated the boys and girls’ race with UMS-Wright defeating St. Paul’s, the pre-meet favorite, 32-46 in the varsity girls’ division.  That came despite another strong race by St. Paul’s star Mary Carleton Johnston, who ran a winning 19 minutes, 33.68 seconds.  Fort Walton Beach was third with 87 points, and Pensacola Pine Forest and Murphy scored 109 and 126 points, respectively.

St. Paul’s gave UMS-Wright a taste of its own medicine in the varsity boys’ division, using another strong race by Lee Gilmer to defeat the Bulldogs 52-67.  Gilmer won the varsity boys’ race in 16:25.

Three Florida schools—Navarre (74) Pensacola Pine Forest (94), and Fort Walton Beach (105)—rounded out the top five.

Murphy won the junior varsity girls division with 30 points and Navarre scored a perfect 15 to take the junior varsity boys crown.

Here is a recap of the action:

VARSITY GIRLS

As far as individual efforts go, everything went pretty much according to plan, with Johnston dominating the race after the first mile.  With the course involving trails and some slow spots, one would have though it would have seriously affected a speed runner like Johnston.

Not so.

Johnston cruised through the first mile in 6:04, and was in a pack that included her teammate, Margaret Harkness, the Gilmore twins, Sarah and Leigh of UMS-Wright, and Murphy’s Shalela Dowdy.  But she gradually picked up the pace, and soon after was running by herself.

“It was a great course,” said Johnston.  “I ran sort of easy for the first mile or so and then picked it up.  I liked the new course better because of the trails, even though the old course was faster.”

Team competition was much different than many would have thought, because even though St. Paul’s has dominated the local running scene, there were times that UMS-Wright made a strong statement with an occasional upset.  It would be the same on this day, as the Lady Bulldogs placed five runners in the top 15 to outpace their crosstown rivals.

“I’m not surprised,” said UMS-Wright coach Pat Galle.  “We just had a real good week of practice and our kids were real determined today.  Our No. 3 through 7 runners gave a real good effort and stacked up real well.”

VARSITY BOYS

Gilmer knew that he was going to be in for a battle, not only against Mobile Davidson’s Damien Lee, but also UMS-Wright’s John Robert Taylor.  But that battle would prove to be heavily in Gilmer’s favor.

Early on, it was a tossup, as Gilmer and Lee ran pretty much side-by-side, with Taylor and Navarre’s Zak Boston not far behind.  It was no secret, then, that Gilmer had to reach in his bag of tricks in order to secure the win.

After the lead pack went through the first mile in 5:07, it soon became a two-man race between Gilmer and Lee.  Gilmer turned it on in the late stages of the race and pulled away for the win.

“I held back at the second mile in order to get a good finishing kick,” said Gilmer.  “I knew I was going to get a lot of competition from Damien and John Robert.  It was a solid event for Mobile.”

“Lee has a good attitude,” said St. Paul’s coach Jim Tate.  “He thinks a race through and lets the results speak for themselves.  He’s turning into an excellent runner and seems to profit from his experiences.

For Davidson’s Lee, it was a case of what might have been.

“I tried to stick with Lee for as long as I could,” he said.  “My coach told me to try and get ahead of him, but he’s a strong runner.”

St. Paul’s, as a team, was strong too, as Patrick Platzer finished sixth, Gilmer’s twin brother John eighth and freshman Stuart Graham 10th  to give the Saints a strong front pack.

“Our team was very focused—we continue to run consistently hard,” said Tate.  “Our kids are doing what you want them to do.  It was a very good meet, and UMS-Wright and Navarre ran really well.”

JUNIOR VARSITY

McGill-Toolen Catholic’s Carmen Carlos, a seventh-grader, was the overall winner in the junior varsity girls 5K race with a time of 21:34.29.  But archrival Murphy, behind sophomore Katherine Subriats (24:10.41), took five of the top 10 scoring positions to defeat Fort Walton Beach 30-42 to win the team crown.  Fort Walton Beach’s top finisher was Lizzy Gallagher, who finished sixth (24:02.78).

McGill-Toolen was third with 88 points.

The junior varsity boys was a completely different story, as Navarre, Fla. took eight of the top 10 overall places and all seven of the top scoring places to score a perfect 15 points.  McGill-Toolen Catholic was 2nd (86) and UMS-Wright 3rd (103).

Navarre’s Jordan Lanter won with a time of 18:55.73, followed by Seth Nydam (second, 19:02.58), Callien Nation (third, 19:10.32), Dylan DesJardins (fifth overall, fourth scorer, 19:28.26), Kyle Massingill (sixth, 19:36.88), Daniel Anderson (seventh, 19:56.33), Geno Hill (eighth, 20:05.42), and Vini Febus (10th, 20:07.51).

The only other runners from schools other than Navarre who finished in the top 10 were Pensacola Pine Forest’s Ryan Foxworth (fourth in 19:26.78) and St. Paul’s Michael Enger (ninth, 20:07.18).

JUNIOR HIGH

St. Paul’s Colleen Danley and Patrick Steadman were the winners in the middle school 2-mile race.  Danley won the girls’ race in 14:15.13, while Steadman won the boys’ race in 14:11.92.

Meet Preview: St. Paul's favored in 14th Annual Great Muddy Classic

by Arthur L. Mack

St. Paul’s Episcopal School is the favorite in the boys and girls’ division in the 14th Annual Great Muddy Classic, scheduled for Saturday at Mobile’s Medal of Honor Park.

There are 20 schools entered in the race, with six divisions: Middle School Girls, Middle School Boys, High School Junior Varsity Girls, High School Junior Varsity Boys, High School Varsity Girls, and High School Varsity Boys.

Other Mobile area schools to watch are Mobile’s UMS-Wright and McGill-Toolen Catholic. Out of town schools to watch include Ft. Walton Beach and Pensacola Pine Forest.

Middle School boys and girls will run two miles, while junior varsity and varsity runners will run 5K (3.1 miles). The course itself consists of grass, wooded trails, and depending on rain, mud.

The race got its name when it was held at Chickasabogue Park for two years. For the last 11 years, it was held at the University of Mobile, where there was a part of the race where runners had to negotiate a 2 ½ foot high ditch. This is the first year that it has been held at Medal of Honor Park.

“The course won’t be as challenging as in years past (when it was at the University of Mobile),” said race director Kevin Stoots. “On paper, it would look like an easy course, but when they (athletes) run on it, it won’t be as easy as it looks.”

Entries are unlimited in the middle school and high school junior varsity divisions, while varsity boys and girls teams will be limited to seven entries.

St. Paul’s Mary Carleton Johnston, who is coming off a sixth-place finish in last week’s Jesse Owens meet, is the favorite in the varsity girls’ race, while in the varsity boys’ division, St. Paul’s Lee Gilmer, who ran a strong second in the elite boys’ race at Jesse Owens, is favored to win.

Other individuals to watch are UMS-Wright’s Sarah and Leigh Gilmore, Murphy’s Shalela Dowdy, and Davidson’s Damien Lee.
