  • Collins Hill GA girls runs the first sub-12:00 outdoor DMR of the season, US#1 11:59.44 until Dana Hills CA runs faster at Mt. SAC a day later. Mountain Brook AL 2nd at 12:22.04.
  • Super two-day distance double for Mason OH soph Zach Wills.  Wills runs US#1 9:13.58 for full 2 Mile, besting FL Finalist Clint McKelvey TN 9:18.52 -- then returns Saturday to take down another FL finalist, Matt Sonnenfeldt TN, in the mile 4:15.70 (US #6) to 4:17.79 (US #10)
  • Knoxville Catholic TN freshman  Megan Ferowich breaks out with a 10:50.48 2 Mile win, dropping a US#2 time in the process. Mountain Brook distance star Madeline Morgan front-runs a fast mile victory in US#6 4:57.76
  • Centerville OH sr Shawn Roberts drops 2k Steeple meet record down to US#3 6:14.74
  • Trotwood-Madison OH junior William Henry cranks US# 7 47.38 400, topping Ethan Kasson (Parkview GA) 47.77
  • Great boys jumps, with Westminster GA 7-footer Maalik Reynolds managing 6-10.00 (US # 9) for the win, and Dominique Hubert (Eastside GA) cracking the 24 ft barrier with a leap of 24-00.50 (+1.5w) for the gold. Hubert backs up his speed on the straight with a 10.57 (+1.9w) 100m  victory
  • Speedy, but windy, 100 win for Howard TN freshman Laquisha Jackson, hitting 11.88w (+2.1)
  • Trotwood-Madison OH boys crank out US #12 3:18.23 4x400 to conclude the meet.
 

Meet Preview: 1800 from 15 states and Canada set to compete

For over 45 years the Volunteer Track Classic has been a fixture on the Southeastern high school track and field schedules. This year should be no different.  A National Scholastic Sports Foundation (www.nssf.org) Select meet, the 2009 Vol Classic will see the inclusion of collegiate competition as the UT Lady Vol  College sections bring in the 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion Lady Vols, Alabama, Ohio State and Carson Newman College.  On the high school side the action should be great on the track as well as the field as numerous nationally ranked teams and individuals start competition Friday at 5PM.
 
Among the standouts expected to compete:
 
Kathy Kroeger - (2 mile and 1 mile) - Independence HS, TN - 4 Time Tennessee State Cross Country Champion / 4 time Footlocker Cross Country Finalist and All-American / Footlocker National Cross Country Champion 2006
 
Madeline Morgan - Mountain Brook HS - Birmingham, AL - 2007 Nike Team Nationals individual champion
Ranked 17th in US in the 1600 and 11th US in 3200
 
Austin Gamble - Cypress Hills HS, FL - Ranked 4th in US in Discus at 210' 5.5" looks like a clear favorite to break the meet record of 183' set in 1983.
 
Collins Hill High School (Suwanee, GA) - Brings a limited but talented squad to Knoxville. 
Collins Hill a perennial state champ in Georgia: 6-time Girls State Champions in AAAAA  Cross Country, 3-time Girls State Champions in Track and Field.  Nationally-ranked in Cross Country the last two years (#22 in 07 and #9 in 08).  Collins Hill brings standout distance runner:
Amanda Winslow - 4-time State Champion and Nike Outdoor Track All-American in the Mile and 4x800m. Winslow has won state titles in Cross Country, 1600m, and 3200m, was ranked #9 in the nation last year at 1600m (4:48.3) and is currently also in the top 10.
 
Maalik Reynolds - Westminster HS - Atlanta, GA - Tied for 5th (nationally) on at 7'-0" in the high Jump - could threaten the 26 year old meet record of 7'0.5" set by Knoxville native Tony Heitztman
 
Matthew Sonnenfeldt - Knoxville West HS - Tennessee State Cross Country Champ / 2008 Footlocker National Cross Country Finalist - fresh off of a 9:06 ( Top 17 - US) - 3200 performance at last weeks Arcadia Invite in California - will run the mile
 
Clint McKelvey -Maryville HS -  2008 Footlocker National Cross Country Finalist / 11th Nike Indoor Nationals in 2 Mile
 
Blacksburg High School - Blacksburg, VA - the defending Vol Classic Girls Team Champ returns a strong contingent:  Girls team was the Virginia Indoor State Champions for AA. Team was second in the 4x mile at Nike Indoor Nationals
Joanna Stevens - 11th grade (4:58.08 1600, VA state champion in 1600, 7th at NIN)
Allison Homer - 12th grade (5:06.08 1600, 11:13 3200) VA state champion in 3200 - Nike Cross Country Nationals qualifier, will be attending Wake Forest
Kathleen Stevens - 11th grade (5:00.30 1600, VA state indoor champion 1000 meters with a 2:14 best 800)
Hannah Brown - 9th grade (500 meter state champion in Virginia; NIN freshman All American in the mile
Trinity Foreman - 12th grade - last year's Volunteer Classic mile winner (5:09 1600 PR, 2:18 800 PR) - will compet for Appalachian State Univ.
 
Trotwood Madison - Ohio - returns nationally ranked relay teams
4x4 Relay Team – 2007 & 2008 Nike Outdoor Champions. 2007 & 2008 Ohio State Champions, OHSAA State Record Holder (3:13.46)
William Henry  – 2008 3rd place in state final (400m), PR (47.67), 2009 Ohio Indoor State Champion (400m)
2009 Ohio Indoor State Runner-up (200m)
