Wehunt's win establishes impressive range
By Ricky Quintana
Tallahassee, FL- A drought of another sort ended Friday evening on the rain-soaked, rain-delayed FSU Relays at Mike Long Track. Derek Wehunt (Sickles) turned back a strong field to run away with the 3200m run in a US #4 time of 9:06.78 as 6 runners ducked under 9:15.58.
“I knew it would be a fast race,” said Wehunt, who has set personal bests of 4:16 and 1:52.98 this season. “I didn’t want to take the lead until the last 400m-600m.”
Wehunt has been the Florida mid-distance and now distance sensation this season after having a history of faltering towards the end of his races. Wehunt reversed the trend this time hammering home the win.
“I know I have had my ups and downs, but this season has been really good for me. There’s been a lot of change. I’m not sure what has been the difference.”
The race started out fairly quick as NTN South Regional winner and two time 4A FHSAA State XC Champion Brian Atkinson towed a group of eight through the 1600m in 4:36.7 (68.6, 69.2, 69.0, 69.8). The race began to take a tactical bent before Leon (Tallahassee, FL) sophomore Will Stanford went from 8th to 1st and took a three second lead from 1700m to 1900m (For historical buffs, Stanford and Matt Mizereck are coached by Herbie Wills’ younger brother, Andrew). His lead remained for two laps before Atkinson regained the lead at the 2400m mark (2:18.4-6:55.0).
By this point, Hoover AL sr Pat McGregor began to struggle and not be a factor. Wehunt, two time 4A FHSAA State Champion Mizereck, Connor Revord (Jesuit, Tampa, FL) and Bishop Kinney junior Colin Barker shadowed Atkinson. A penultimate lap of 70.6 brought the four through the 2800m mark in 8:05.6. From there Wehunt went to work.
“I was surprised when no one was with me. I knew Connor Revord (1:53 800m) and McGregor were back there and might blow right past me. I passed the 200m and got up on my toes.”
Mizereck seemed to close down the backstretch, but once Wehunt hit the 200 to go mark, he extended his lead.
“I felt good,” he said. “I could go a little faster. I hope so.”
Behind him, Mizereck scored a 17-second PB with his 9:09.24, Barker put up a 25 second PB(9:11.20), Revord shaved 3 seconds off his PB(9:14.94), Atkinson went 4 seconds under (9:15.01) and Stanford 17 seconds (9:15.58). It was possibly the deepest race in Florida high school history.
Wehunt was upbeat about his new-found range and the possibilities that exist for him in future meets. “I have no clue what my best race is,” said the University of Florida signee. “I will run the 4 x 800m because we could have a really good team (with 1:53.8 twin brother Dan). I like the longer 3200m and the 1600m.”
The future seems bright for Wehunt and with his series of stellar runs this March, the sky’s the limit.
Other top performances:
- Junior Kayla Parker (Port St. Joe) didn’t let the three-hour rain delay keep her from performing well in the 100mH. Using a quick start, Parker stormed to a US # 8 time of 14.33(2.0). Parker also scored a 18-04(NWI) leap to win the LJ.
- In the girl’s DMR, Bishop Kinney raced to US #6 time of 12:33.76. on the strength of Jamie Heekin’s 3:46 (1200m), Sarah Davis’ 2:20 (800m) and Elizabeth Tucker’s 5:19 (1600m).
- SR Patrick McGregor’s 1200m opener of 3:03.6 (60, 2:02) led Hoover to a 29-second winning time of 10:39.13 in the boys DMR (53.8, 2:04.7, 4:36.8).
- Wharton received a pleasant surprise this season with the addition of first-year runner and former soccer player Sean Obinwa (1:55.34 so far this season). The son of Nigerian parents, the American-born Obinwa split opened up the 4 x 800m as Wharton was able to hold on for the win over Gonzaga MD with a US #2 time of 7:55.54 to 7:56.84 US #4.
- Wharton SR Amani Bryant used a strong start to win the 300m H in a time of 43.91, US #4.
Preview: Hoover AL stars should challenge for top marks in Tallahassee
- NIN mile runner-up Patrick McGregor and 7-00.75 high jumper Anthony May are two of the top national class entrants this weekend
