Preview: VT Headliners: Davis II, New Bern relayers

by SteveU

If the buzz audibly increases when Wayne Davis II or the New Bern NC relay teams toe the line this weekend here at the Virginia Tech Invitational, the annual multi-state affair directed by Dan Ward, there’s good reason.

Not only are they national leaders, but they all have a history here.

SE Raleigh NC sr Wayne Davis II had the performance of the meet here last year, skimming the 55H in 7.08, #2 all-time.  For New Bern, you have to go a little further back, but in 2006 Karjuan Williams had one of the great performances here, a 1:02.80 500 meters that ranks #2 all-time, as he headed a young group that has now matured.

There will be plenty more faces that will be familiar either to fans here or in Virginia in general, defending shot champ Emily Vannoy MD, long sprint specialist and US 500 leader Taylor Sykes VA, near-50-foot triple jumper and defending champ David Wilson VA, defending girls pole vault and high jump champs Emma Dejarnette VA and Saniel Atkinson MD, US#1 and #3 VA 500 girls Natalie Woodford and Genamarie McCant, the sprinters and middle distance girls from Eleanor Roosevelt MD, and a seemingly bottomless well of VA boys distance stars.

But fans would also do well to train their eyes toward some less familiar names.  Maryland’s Jon Hill opened eyes with a 7-02 high jump in December and will jump in his first major meet here.  Sherice Walker NC tripled at the Eastern Challenge NC last weekend and will try to just sweep the long jump and triple jump this time.

More on some of the anticipated leading highlights
  • New Bern’s best relay crews ever?  The last time Coach Nick Sparks brought New Bern here, they were a young group that included one old face in a new place: Williams had starred in Louisiana before being displaced by Hurricane Katrina and was “adopted” by Coach Sparks as his family relocated.  His 1:02.80 500 meters here also ranked #2 all-time and one of the best races of a long and well-documented indoor/outdoor campaign for Williams.  But most of the rest of the talent was young, including the freshmen Hendrix brothers.
Now Andrew and Anthony Hendrix are seniors and, along with junior Fuquawn Greene, comprise what could be at least two of the best relay quartets in the country.  At Arkansas, they put together a #2 all-time 1:27.02 4x200 and a US#1 3:19.28 4x400.  Here they will go for the 4x800, where they ran 7:46 last year, and the 4x400, where they will face crews from DeMatha Catholic MD and Archbishop Carroll.
  • Long sprint wars – With the New Bern stars and Virginia’s new long sprint king Sykes picking between the 300, 500, relays and other events, it was hard to know where you’d get the best matchups.  But as it turns out, the Hendrix brothers are both tabbed for the 500, where Sykes US-leading 1:05.42 and perhaps their old teammate’s mark can serve as targets.  Sykes is the top seed in a strong, deep 300, which includes New Bern’s Greene, who is the US leader at 200 (21.39).
As with the boys, the girls 500 list is often dominated by Virginians, since they contest the event as much or more than anyone else.  The aforementioned Woodford and McCant are the fastest 2009 entrants in the field, but other long sprint specialists with less experience at the event, like Roosevelt's Afia Charles, could also challenge in that 1:15 range or better.  And MD star Ambrosia Iwugo ran 1:14.60 last year here at the distance.
  • Virginia boys distance dominion – At the beginning of the XC season, New Jersey and Colorado were heralded as the deepest distance states for the boys, but perhaps Virginia is as good or better, with some athletes under the national radar for most of the fall emerging to join the harrier standouts.  Friday’s 3200 features a dizzying array of talent, led by surprising US leader and Kellam VA sr Bobby Peavey (9:08.74), and also including Western Albemarle senior teammates Kyle Satterwhite (2008 VT 3200 runner-up at 9:12.01) and Tyler Stutzman (former US#1 miler), and Foot Locker Finals #3 and Mountain View sr Thomas Porter.
In Saturday’s mile, those four all return, as well as Atlee VA sr Ben Dejarnette and Georgetown Prep MD sr Ramsey Chapin.  Stutzman and Peavey have each been invited to compete in the Millrose Mile next weekend.  The third Virginia invitee for that prestigious race, Thomas Edison sr Leoule Degfae, will focus on the 1000 here, where he could challenge the US#1 of 2:30.81.
