week ending 10/21/06

Boys - Girls

Boys

#1 Collegiate, NY v. #5 Smithtown, NY v. #9 Glastonbury, CT
Clowns to the left of me, jokers to the right, stuck in the middle with you… well it certainly wasn’t jokers wild for the Dutchmen out of NYC as they placed third in the Championship section at the Ivy League type function run by Brown University at Goddard Park up in Rhode Island. Smithtown took the win with an outstanding front three and Glastonbury took second place with an impressive top two.

So it begs the question how good is good and what happens when your fifth man is last seen in Hoboken, NJ (birthplace of Frank Sinatra). Well let’s play a game – just for fun - I shall score the Brown meet thru four men:
Smithtown 40, Collegiate – 47, Glastonbury 53

What this reveals is that both Smithtown and Glastonbury are FOR REAL (yes I do realize that xc is a 5 man sport – so there!). Certainly the fact that Collegiate was missing their very powerful #2 in junior Dylan Trotzuk is a fact and a huge factor but the reality is that they were third in this race with 128 points – 81 coming from a fifth man that did all he could on the day. Kudos to both Smithtown and Glastonbury on very fine outings up in New England!

George Calano the coach of Collegiate called me from the observation deck of the Staten Island Ferry with his report – no he was not going to jump! He stated that, “they are wounded but NOT slain”. Film at 11…

Next up for the Dutchmen will be:
October 27 at Vanny in their own Invite
November 3 they will have their Ivy Prep School Champs

#3 Shenendehowa, NY
“Doc” and the boys under the wisdom and guidance of master coach Matt Jones are busy training for their

Suburban Council Championships to be held on Saturday, October 28 at Saratoga State Park.

Doc and the Plainsmen are looking for a beautiful afternoon of racing. By the by – a guy by the name of BRD (Brian Rhodes Devey) of Guilderland will line up on the day. Rumor has it that the “Viet Nam” van may return? Only in Section 2 of NYS! Good luck to the Men of Shen.

#4 Danbury, CT
Won their Conference meet last Thursady with 25 points over Ridgefield, CT. The Hatters of coach Rob Murray have established themselves as true contenders to the NE throne. The Connecticut power has been getting better and better every single meet and will be a force to be reckoned with by the time November comes along. Their training has been “spot on” according to coach Murray.

Conference meet
Fairfield County Interscholastic Conference Championship
Thursday 10/19/06.

Local Report on Danbury:
The team won with 25 points to Ridgefield, CT with 109 points. Had six runners all conference: Joey Bubniak, Justin Rau, Brady Becker, Parker Bourdreau and Tucker Schaefer. The Hatters had a 14 second spread from 1-5 with a 16:31 team average. Their top two runners (Willie Ahearn and Matt Terry) did not run in order to let two seniors have a shot at their top seven for their

Connecticut State Meets that start this coming weekend 10.28.06.

#6 Shaker, NY
The Bisons out of the Albany area of NY are coached by long time NYS legend Mr. Ed Sprinstead and are paced by the dynamic duo of Matt Bogdan and RJ Sniffen both sub 13 minute men at Van Cortlandt Park last week.

Have big dual coming up with Shen, Burnt Hills, Guilderland, Saratoga Springs, Bethlehem as well as Niskayuna
this Saturday at Saratoga State Park

Possibly the toughest league in the country in any sport.

#7 Warwick Valley, NY
Ran in and dominated their league meet with 15 points having a wonderful Warwick run as ten maniacs crossed the line together. Their five-man compression (make that ten man) was ZERO SECONDS as the harriers of coaches Saint and Potter all crossed the line together.

The Warwick Wizards are looking forward to All Hallows Eve as they gather their forces for the NYSPHSAA Championship on November 11 at their HOME course.

#8 Fayetteville Manlius, NY
Tommy G has one of the MOST revered course records in all of America as he eclipsed the historic mark of Brad Hudson last week at Van Cortlandt Park. Prediction he will break at least one more this year and Coach Bill Aris will develop a fifth man for the “War Games” in THE EVIL EMPIRE!!!

#10 Chaminade, NY
Coach Bill Carriero of Long Island based Flyers out of the powerful Catholic High School Athletic Association have been racing very well recently. Led by steeplechase All-American Ryan Mc Dermott, Chaminade easily won their section of Nassau Coaches Invitational on 10.21.06.
