it was reported somewhere along the line that the Dutchmen were opening-up this past weekend – not true. They have a dual meet on Wednesday at THE MECCA – Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Coach Calano’s charges will ‘run thru’ the course gently as a hard tempo to pick up the win. Then it’s time to hop a plane Friday morning, destination: Hoover, Alabama and the Great American Cross-Country Festival at Spain Park. Coach Calano reports that his stable of runners have been “kicking at the barn door” – interestingly enough the only horses besides the Collegiate studs reside in Central Park in New York City! 3. coach of the defending NTN National Champions Mike Szczepanik reports that the Hilton girls are primed and ready for 2006. They opened at the Wildcat Invitational and won in a runaway 32 to 54 victory over another very fine NYS program in HFL with Liz Deir up front. Szczepanik reports: "Great running day - temperature and sunshine wise, but horrible ground conditions. There was some serious mud through a vast majority of the course. It was especially bad in the trail section that is approximately 800m on each of two loops - there is was close to ankle deep in many spots. Even in the other areas there were very few dry areas. Also, the course changed slightly (not a huge difference). If you remember from states a few years ago there - there was a large tree that the runners went around with about 1000m to go. That section is no longer there as they are expanding the school parking lot. The bottom of the hill was extended to make up the difference." 2006 Group I Girls Varsity Individual Results 2006 Group I Girls Varsity Individual Results | | | | | Runner | School | Time | | LIZ DEIR | HFL | 18:49 | | ALLISON SAWYER | HILTON | 19:22 | | CAROLINE SCHULTZ | HILTON | 20:00 | | SHELBY HERMAN | HILTON | 20:13 | | MEG VANHOUTEN | HFL | 20:57 | | KATE CUFARI | SUTHERLAND | 21:08 | | BRIANNA DEMING | THOMAS | 21:20 | | JESSIE BRUNETT | HFL | 21:24 | | JEANNIE SAUTER | CANANDAIGUA | 21:25 | | SARAH RITCHIE | HILTON | 21:27 | | JULIE DAHIKEMPER | MERCY | 21:29 | | FLORENCE WILLIAMS | SUTHERLAND | 21:38 | | ASHLEY JONES | HILTON | 21:43 | | JODI ROBINSON | RUSH-HENRIETTA | 21:46 | | LINDSAY CROTTI | HILTON | 21:52 | | ASHLEY COCUZZI | WEBSTER SCHROEDER | 21:55 | | MINDY SAWNOR | ATHENA | 22:02 | | KAYCEE RATCLIFFE | PENFIELD | 22:05 | | BECKY GRAVENSTEDE | HFL | 22:06 | | JANINE SEBER | VICTOR | 22:06 | |

the Cougars of coach Jim Schlentz had a double dual last week and walked away with two victories in their league led by Ashley Higginson. Bri Jackucewicz sat out last week race and will look to put on the racing shoes in the near future. "but rivals know they will have Ashley Higginson to contend with, too. The senior struggled a bit as a junior late last fall, dropping to 26th by FL NE. But she had a pretty strong track season, with a career highlight coming with her victorious 9:42.07 3k romp at Penn followed by 10:38 in the New Jersey MOC (3rd, 1st non-senior) and 10:43y at NON. She will hope to help Bri get back to full strength while getting faster herself this fall." From steveu 3. Bronxville, NY – a little note on coach Jim Mitchell: The consensus is that Mitchell is a training genius who has almost single-handedly made Bronxville a running town. It's the reason why he was the first coach inducted into the National High School Track Coaches Hall of Fame. There is a wall dedicated in his honor at the New Balance Armory. Tradition is why Bronxville is synonymous with cross country. Tradition is what the walls in his classroom represent. The tradition started with his 3,200 relay team that finished third at the state meet in 1979. Tradition is also the notebook that Mitchell carries to track the workouts of every athlete he has ever coached. It allows him to compare senior Amanda Hudson's training runs at Van Cortlandt Park to those of the Mullen sisters or Rorke. It's why he can say that sophomore Virginia Connor is ahead of all of them in her sophomore year. The mystery is coming up with this kind of talent from a school district that is one square mile and with class sizes that are roughly 125 students per grade. Mitchell, in his 27th year with the Broncos, offered this insightful explanation: "I think I'm just lucky. To be perfectly honest with you, I don't know. There's just always been a continuity of one or two tremendous girls, always providing the spark and leadership for the team." Courtesy of THE JOURNAL NEWS 4. Saratoga Springs, NY –
