DyeStat XC Region Review NE

Summary of Northeast Top Ten, Week Ending Oct. 13, 2007

By Matt Soja, Dyestat NE Regional Editor

Boys - Girls

The big story this weekend was obviously the Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park, where most of the region’s top teams competed against the best of New York and Southeast.  On the boys’ side, North Penn’s dominating performance was the big surprise with Danbury also looking in excellent shape.  In the girls’ loaded Eastern States race Hanover and Voorhees showed why they are deservedly ranked as the best two teams in the region, finishing third and fourth behind New York powers Fayetteville-Manlius and Saratoga.  There were also a few extraordinary performances by unranked teams, including Don Bosco NJ boys, which may be reflected in this week’s new rankings. For more on Manhattan, see Dyestat’s meet coverage on its own page.

Elsewhere, Brookline boys dominated the Bay State Invitational, taking 1-2-3 individually as well as the team title. Haddonfield and Con-Val boys also won local meets against in-state competition.

Next week brings us the Pre-Regional meet at Bowdoin Park, which Dyestat will cover on-site. Elsewhere, the Brown Invitational should feature most of the best teams in New England while Eastern States meet at Van Cortlandt Park (not to be confused with this weekend’s Eastern States girls race) should result in another bevy of great 2.5 mile performances.

2. Brookline (MA)
Instead of going to the Bronx, they opted to stay closer to home and dominated the competition at the Bay State Invitational, winning 72-165 over Whitman-Hanson. Their spectacular 1-2-3 punch resulted in an impressive 16:14.4 average, but depth is really an issue as their fifth runner did not break 17 minutes on the fast Franklin Park course.

1. Bob Gibson 15:49
2. David Wilson 15:55
3. Michael Burnstein 15:58
15. Elliot Lehane 16:29

4. North Penn (PA)
Had a spectacular performance at Manhattan, dominating the D race 44-98 over Southeast powerhouse Midlothian VA, and getting the only sub-13 average of the day (12:58.0), ahead of Danbury and Germantown. And all that despite Hoagland’s sickness, which may have cost him at least 15 seconds. This might propel them to the top spot in the region in this week’s rankings.
