  • Delbarton NJ sr Pat Schellberg pulls away late to win by nearly two seconds in the Boys HS Mile, running 4:14.84 to runner-up Anthony Kostelac's (Albemarle VA sr) 4:16.75.  Francis Hernandez NH 3rd at 4:17.58

  • New York AC/Bethel Park PA sr Trevor Barron (right) added the 1 mile race walk to his list of records, striding 6:03.48 to place 3rd in the Susan Rudin Men's 1-Mile Racewalk, losing only to veteran elite walker Tim Seaman and Swede Andreas Gustaffson. Defending NIN champ Alejandro Chavez TX was 7th in 6:33.55.  The old record was 6:11.0 by Paul Tavares NY in 1990.  Barron's time is also superior to the outdoor HSR
  • Benjamin Cardozo NY girls won the 4x400 over Medgar Evers NY in a thriller between nation's top two ranked teams: 3:53.19- 3:53.21, just off their US#1-2 times on the shorter track
  • McAuley NY sr Phyllis Francis 3rd in the elite 400 with PR and US#5 55.82
  • Abington PA took the boys 4x800 in 8:01.00, while Garden City NY led three teams under 9:25 in the girls 4x800 with US#9 9:22.66

Millrose Games Previews

Preps competing against the pros, too! - Almost every year, a few preps get to line up against the pros in a few events at Millrose, and this year is no exception.  McAuley NY sr Phyllis Francis is in the Women's 400, while Bethel Park PA sr (New York AC) Trevor Barron is in the Susan Rudin Men's 1-Mile Racewalk.  While Francis's 400 PR is "just" 56.32, she is US#1 this year so far in both the 600 (1:32.14) and 800 (2:12.88), and has run 39.48 for 300.  In fact, she is #2 all-time in the 600 at 1:29.65 (2008) and won the NSIC 800 last year in 2:07.69.  Her outdoor 800 PR from 2008 is 2:04.83.

Barron, one of the greatest prep racewalkers ever, was 4th in the World Youth Champs last summer over 10k, speeding a US Junior Record 42:22.79.  He also walked 13:00.93 over 3k at the WY Trials.  Barron will be joined Alejandro Chavez from the South Texas WC, who won NIN last year in 6:39.79.  The Women's USATF Championship 1-Mile Racewalk will include New Yorkers Amy Cheung, Crosby Tillman, Destiny DeLalane, and Erika Shaver of Ohio.  DeLalane was 2nd in the NON 1-mile walk last spring, but Cheung topped DeLalane and Tillman in the Hispanic Games 1500 RW.  Shaver has walked 7:20 for 1600 meters.

Lipari, McGee left wanting more
Millrose Games HS Events - Girls Preview

Cory McGee
and Emily Lipari and are both driven by the past.  For McGee, a senior at Pass Christian in Mississippi, she’s galvanized by her near misses at Millrose. She’s finished agonizingly close three straight years, winding up as the runner-up each time. Meanwhile, Lipari, a senior at Roslyn on Long Island, NY, who was third at Millrose last year and seventh in 2008, is fueled by a late season injury last fall that derailed her hopes of a third straight trip to the Foot Locker Cross-Country Nationals in San Diego. McGee and Lipari will both be trying to fulfill a dream and put the past behind them when they take the line as the co-favorites in the girls high school mile at the 103rd Millrose Games on Friday night -  FULL PREVIEW

Schellberg, Kostelac looking for national stardom
Millrose Games HS Events - Boys Preview

Coming into this season, anyone that knew anything about high school track was familiar with Anthony Kostelac. But Pat Schellberg? Outside of New Jersey, his name really didn’t carry any weight.  Schellberg is hoping to make a big statement on Friday night.  Meanwhile, there were some question marks about how fit Kostelac would be this season after being sidelined for eight weeks beginning late last May due to a stress fracture to his femur. But a strong cross country season, and a recent 2:33.18 1,000 and 1:53 4x800 anchor showed that Kostelac could be ready for a big performance. - FULL PREVIEW

Raneri Round-up

The Road to Millrose did not end with an invitation to run at Madison Square Garden for John Raneri, but the New Fairfield (CT) senior takes a look at the field of runners who will toe the line Friday night in New York City and gives his picks for the top 3 places - FULL PREVIEW
