Millrose winners set the pace, but New Yorkers have the kicks
Lead Story by SteveU
Cory McGee and Pat Schellberg came to Beantown for the Reebok BIG Junior Miles hoping to maintain their status as the national leaders, but a pair of New Yorkers had other ideas. With a pair of US#1s, Roslyn NY sr Emily Lipari (4:46.77) and Fayetteville-Manlius NY sr Alex Hatz (4:12.08) used beastly last lap kicks to beat a pair of talented fields.
With the “pop” in her legs that was missing the week before, Lipari refused to get gapped like she did at Millrose. Instead, she reminded fans of the way she ran on this track last March, in winning NIN, and blasted away from a pack of four in the final 150. McGee, who had led every step of the way until then, was beaten for 2nd as Blacksburg VA sr Joanna Stevens caught her at the line, 4:50.02-4:50.06. Joanna’s twin, Kathleen, was another second back at 4:51.03 for 4th, and fast-closing Exeter Academy NH jr Katrina Coogan got 5th and a coveted sub-5 with 4:59.86.
Thirty minutes later, Hatz also did some reminding, too … as in reminding fans of the form he showed during a tremendous 2008-09 junior year. Continuing a comeback from the kidney surgery that laid him low nearly all fall, Hatz took advantage of a pedestrian pace for the first 3/4 mile and roared away from the field on the final lap. Arcadia CA jr Ammar Moussa (4:14.13) kicked past Penkridge, England’s Adam Cotton (4:15.04) in the final 50, followed by Gonzaga DC sr Billy Ledder (4:16.12) and a hard-fading Schellberg (4:21.01). Like McGee, Shellberg fronted the pack nearly the entire race before cramping up the final 200.
McGee had no regrets in leading. She took the field through the quarters in 71.2, 2:26.6, and 3:39.8, but couldn’t shake Lipari or the twins as a group of four went into the final lap with anyone having a chance to win. “It’s not that I don’t think I can kick,” McGee said, “but I feel with my endurance, I can set a fast pace and hold it.” The Pass Christian MS sr didn’t run badly, nearly beating her indoor PR.
But no one had anything close to an answer to Lipari’s electrifying burst of speed. “I had the pop in my legs and something extra,” she said. “I know if I get through 800, and I still feel good, that I’m going to have a good race.”
Unlike McGee, Schellberg had no desire to lead the entire way. He just wound up with it from the initial surge from the line and no one wanted to grab it from him. He waged an internal war between picking it up to try and lose the field, or trying to force someone to pass him, with the result being something in-between: Three quarters of 64 seconds each.
The pack behind Shellberg was constantly shifting, but as the laps wore on the rest of the contenders emerged. Moussa was close behind the lead from the start and stayed in position. Cotton and Ledder worked their way up into the top five, as did NXN champ and Craig Lutz with a mid-race move.
And then there was Hatz. “I just kept covering moves (within the pack) until I felt like it was time to go. I started moving toward the front with 300, 350 to go; I didn’t want to wait until the last lap. But then with 200 to go, I took it.”
When he moved, Shellberg cramped up. Moussa, Cotton and Ledder also had kicks, but not like Hatz’s. Cotton had moved into second when Moussa tried to repass him with 100 to go. He thought he saw a path on the inside, but Cotton moved back and they bumped hard. There was no interference called and Moussa passed on the outside with 50 left for 2nd.
Despite the spectacular success, Hatz did not treat the victory like it was some triumphant return as much as a positive signpost along the way, not even allowing that he felt like the “old Hatz” yet. “Now we go back to work to get that time down.”
Previews and Predictions - SteveU breaks down the contenders (basically everyone) in both Junior Miles and taking a swing at picking the top four. Hint: The road to victory goes through last week's stars.
Gregorek withdraws - Seekonk MA sr John Gregorek withdrew from the Reebok BIG Junior Boys Mile due to a recent illness and wanting to help his team in other meets
