Leonardi, Geoghegan score fast repeats
Class A sweep for Cheverus

Team Champs:
  • Class A - Cheverus boys 83 over Scarborough 97; Cheverus girls 52 over Massabesic 101
  • Class B - Greely boys 74 over York 105; Cape Elizabeth girls 46 over York 110
  • Class C - Boothbay Region boys 58 over Freeport 59; Waynflete girls 37 over North Yarmouth Acad. 38
Boys Highlights
  • Brunswick sr Will Geoghegan took his 2nd straight title, overcoming Scarborough sr Nathan Hathaway, 15:43 to 15:46, for the Class A crown.  The two were nearly 30 seconds up on third and had the two best times of the day.  Hathaway was also 2nd last year.  Cheverus built up a good lead through four runners and held off Scarborough, 83-97, for the team title
  • Greely scored three in the top 10 in the Class B race and won with 74, 31 better than York.  York had the individual winner, however, with Alex Moser's 16:14 triumphant by seven seconds
  • Boothbay Region won the 1st, 4th and 5th spots over Freeport and it was enough for a 1-pt win in Class C, 58-59.  Boothbay soph Chase Brown got the single point at the top, finishing 2nd overall (17:03) to individual champ and Madison soph Matthew McClintock
Girls Highlights
  • Kennebunk soph Abbey Leonardi won her 2nd straight title, avenging her first loss to a Maine runner 2 weeks before and clocking a fastest-of-the-day 18:08 to win the Class A race.  Cheverus soph Emily Durgin, who had beaten Leonardi at the regional meet, repeated her runner-up finish, leading Cheverus to a decisive win and the best team showing of the meet. It was the first state championship in a girls sport for Cheverus, which was an all-boys school until 2000.  Leonardi and Durgin were more than a minute ahead of third
  • Maranacook soph Abby Mace had the third best time of the day (18:48), overall, in winning Class B by 1:09.  Cape Elizabeth dominated up front and with their depth to score 46 and win by 64 in 'B.'
  • Waynflete got a 1-2 from frosh Martha Veroneau (21:04) and soph Amy Allen (21:20) and held on for a 1-pt win over North Yarmouth Acad.
