Gov. Livingston boys, led by Justin Amezquita, and the Johnson girls, behind Emily Vargas, take team titles

Highlights
  • The Gov. Livingston boys, led by an impressive triple from Justin Amezquita, defeated Hanover Park, 88-76.

  • Amezquita teamed with Matt Lander to win the triple jump (78-2¾), paired with Linton Benitez to win the pole vault (23-0) and fueled the winning 4x400-meter relay (3:34.2). Lander also teamed with Nick Aguilera and Chris Guerrero to win the team intermediate hurdles (3:12.5). Corey Braun and Max Machado, members of the 4x400 team, joined Kevin Reavy and Scott Fleming to win the 4x100 relay in 45.2.

  • The Johnson girls, fueled by four gold-medal performances from Emily Vargas, earned the team trophy,82-74 over Hanover Park.

  • Vargas was the individual star of the girls' meet. She leaped 16-8½ and teamed with Sofia Arteaga to win the long jump (30-11), cleared 5-2 to win the high jump (9-6) with Nicky Marzano and sailed 36-8½ in the triple jump to win that event (67-4¾) with  Arteaga. Vargas also anchored the first-place 4x100 relay (52.8).

  • Johnson also was the beneficiary of a meet record in the distance medley, where Cathy Goncalves (4:04 for 1,200), Laura Czapla (1:04 for 400), Theresa Rhenna (2:33 for 800) and Sara Vagie (5:32 for 1,600) won in 13:13.3.
