Highlights
  • The Rahway boys and Johnson girls punctuated Mountain Division titles with MVC records in the meet-concluding 1,600-meter relay, while the New Providence boys and girls swept the Valley Division titles for the second time in three years.
  • There are 15 events out of 16 in the books for each division. Monday’s heavy rains wiped out the triple jump competition, so that event will be held Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at New Providence.
  • The Rahway boys, winners of four of the last five titles, broke two meet records on Day 2 and wrapped up their fourth title in five years. Christen Whyte won the 110 hurdles in 14.1, and he anchored the first-place mile relay (3:21.0) with a 49.8 split as Rahway defeated runner-up and defending champion Union Catholic, 164½-90.  Whyte also broke the MR in the 400 hurdles oin Tuesday in 54.6.
  • The Johnson girls, paced by victories in the high jump (5-2) and long jump (17-8 ¾) by Emily Vargas, made it two straight in the Mountain Division by beating runner-up Rahway, 138-92. The Johnson foursome of Lauren Czapla (59.5), Megan Etzel (1:01.5), Sofia Artega (1:01.5) and Nicole Marzano (1:00.5) won the 4x400 in a meet-record 4:03.1.
  • The New Providence girls helped complete the sweep of the Valley Division trophies in part thanks to Caitlin Toner, who won the 800 (2:25.7) and anchored the winning mile relay (4:15.2). Also for New Providence, Madison Ricks won the shot put (32-11¼) and Anna Rose Gellert won the javelin (89-6) on the second day of competition, while Holly Tucker, who won the pole vault on Tuesday, led off the first-place relay. New Providence scored 175½ points to beat defending champion Kent Place (101½).
  • New Providence senior Danny Trench, who won the Valley Division high jump, placed second in the 400 and anchored the second-place mile relay, kept things in perspective about the final MVC meet after his team won its third straight division title by holding off a vastly-improved Dayton squad, 165-130.
  • D.J. Thornton of Union Catholic broke meet records in the 1,600 (4:21.6) and 3,200 (9:33.6),
  • Ines Simoes of Roselle Catholic took down the 1,600 (5:09.1) and 3,200 records (11:08.6)
  • Cranford junior Kelly Burke improved upon her own Union County record in the pole vault by clearing a meet record 11-7. The previous mark was the 11-6 she made to take sixth at the Meet of Champions last spring.
  • Justin Amezquita of Gov. Livingston cleared a state season best 15-1 to win the boys pole vault on Tuesday.
