The long New York indoor track season which started even before the cross country season ended, meets were held the same weekend as the NXN and Footlocker Northeast Regional, will come to a close this Saturday at Barton Hall on the campus of Cornell University with many of the state’s best going head to head at the NYSPHSAA Championships.   Fans will be treated to a number of matchups that will make it well worth the price of admission.  Some of the featured events will be:

Girls 55 and HH – Madalayen Smith (Saratoga) has a great chance to win the straight away double, but will face stiff competition in both.  Standing in her way in the hurdles is top seed Lateisha Philson (Cardozo).  Smith sits as the top seed in the 55

Girls 300Chamique Francis (Cardozo) is sitting atop the 300 seeds and it could be her race to lose.  Francis will face a stiff challenge from team mate Ahtyana Johnson and super frosh Kyle Plante of Colonie.  With 7 runners seeded under 40 seconds, runners will have to run quick just to make it back to the finals and the lane draw for the final will play a critical role in the medal order.  Another factor for all the Cardozo runners will be before they line up for individual events, they would have had to run trials heats of the  4x 400 and 4 x 200 relays.

Girls 600 -  The 600 could be the event of the entire meet.  Lining up will be the Dyestat Metro Elite #1-2-4-5 runners.  Heading the list will be Hempstead’s Charlene Lipsey, the Metro leader in the 600 and 800.  Lipsey has been known to get out hard, but the last time she faced #2 seed  MacAuley’s Phyllis Francis at the New Balance Collegiate Invite, Francis grabbed the lead early and Lipsey came from behind for the win.  If either of the top two should have an off day, look forCardozo'z Claudia Francis, Mt Vernon’s Breanda Crump or Brie Roller (Lakeland/Panas) to contend for the win.  With these four battling it out not only a new US #1 may be posted, but the state record of  1:29.65 by Francis could be erased.

Girls 1500 and 3000 – New York is known for its great girls cross country teams having claimed every edition of the NXN Championships and placing numerous other teams in the top 10, as a result the two distance races are always full of talent and national lists are always under attack.  Leading the way in the 1500 is US national leader Jackie Gamboli (North Rockland), but she is not alone in the field.  Pushing Gamboli will be Fayetteville – Manlius’s Courtney Chapman as well as Shelby Greany (Suffern) and Hayley McMahon (Arlington) all who have run under 4:40 this season.  One of the most dangerous runner in the field is Emily Lipari (Roslyn) who is sure to be in the running late in the race.  The 3000 also has a wealth of talent headed by Footlocker Finalists Shelby Greany (Suffern) and Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall).  Sure to also be in the lead pack will be Sam Rocker (Burnt Hills), Lizzie Predmore(Shenendehowa) and Samantha Nadal (north Shore).

Girls RelaysCardozo is clearly the top seed in the 4 x 200 and 4 x 400, but with many of its runners doing individual events and relays, a long day of numerous races may take its toll.  Mt Vernon will be there to exploit any weakness.  Bronxville long known for its 4 x 800 relays saved all its runners just for the relay and comes in the top seed, but teams like Boys and Girls as well as Shenendehowa will be in the mix from the start.

Girls High Jump – New York freshman state record holder Alexis Broz(Schulerville) is the top seed with a jump of 5’ 7.75, but there are four other jumpers who have jumped 5’6” or 5’7” this season that will put pressure on the 9th grader.

Girls Pole Vault  - Shenendehowa’s Michelle Quimby seems to be peaking at the right time and comes into the weekend on an upswing.  Sitting atop the seeds in Linda Hadfield (New York Mills) with a 12’ 4” vault.  The state’s most consistent vaulter may by Sydnie Leroy (Port Jervis) who has many 12’ 0” wins this season and may be ready for a big break through.

Girls Long and Triple Jump – Suffern’s Jenn Clayton is the only long jumper over 19’ this indoor season, but my no means is she a clear cut favorite.  Right behind the defending champion is Essence Felder (Brentwood) with an 18’ 8” best in 2009 and Patricia McNish (Manhasset) who has spanned 18’ 6”.  The triple jump will also see a battle among a number of jumpers with Stephanie Barnes (Bayshore) and Oliva Weeks (Elmiria Notre Dame) leading the way with both jumping over 39’ this indoor season.

Girls Shot Put – The throwing event looks to be a battle between upstate vs downstate.  Leading the field will be Melissa Kurdorfer (Lancaster) who has the #2 throw in the USA with a 47’ 11.75 throw who will face Vanessa Stewart (North Babylon) whose 46’ 11.75 ranks #5 in the USA.

Boys  Hurdles – Anything can happen in the hurdles, but if all goes to plan coming off the last hurdle three runners could be out front with the win going to who can lean the best.  Sheepshead Bay’s Darryl Bradshaw, Harrison’s Claudio Dellicarpini and Uniondale’s Nathaniel Mercer are the only three who have run under 7.5 this season and could go stride for stride in the final.

Boys 55 – Bradshaw’s team mate Ayo Ishola Isijola will be part of a 3 man battle in the 55 with Miles Lewis (Middle Country) and Anthony DeJean (Rome Free Academy) the only athletes under 6.5

Boys 300Jermaine Brown (Medger Evers) is the national leader in the 300  and may have to come close to his US #1 to win when he squares off against former US #1 John Thomas (Sheepshead Bay).

Boys 600 – Outdoor 800 meter champion Terrance  Livingston (Great Neck South) comes into the meet as the top seed with a 1:19.48 which ranks him as the US #2.  Fresh off his 1:20.52 , Mike Quercia (Marcellus) should be the strongest contender with Zavior Brown (Pine Bush), John Taylor(Clarkstown South) and Sean Atkinson (Nazareth) right behind the pair each with seeds under 1:22.

Boys 1000 metersAlex Hatz (Fayetteville-Manlius) sits as the US #3 entering the weekend and at last week’s Section 3 Championship set a new New York Jr Class record of 2:26.44.  Hatz was not alone in the race and was pushed all the way to the line by Chris Stogsdill (Marcellus) who sits as the 2nd seed.  Another contender for the state title could be recent Eastern States 800 meter champion Sean Halpin of Iona Prep who enters the weekend with the #8 time in the USA.

Boys 1600 and 3200Jordan Hamm (Canisius) spent the first part of the indoor season on the Millrose chase only to come up short of his goal of making it to Madison Square Garden, but he hard quality racing in running a 4:15.71 will help him in Cornell.  Hamm is one of a group of runners who have run under 4:20 this indoor season including Marco Bertolotti (Port Washington), Robby Andrews (Shoreham Wading River) and early season US 1500 leader Chris Carrington (North Rockland).   The 3200 on paper looks like a run away by the Arlington pair of John Muller and Adam Doherty who are the only seeds under 9:20, but the pack of Alex Leuchanka (Shenendehowa), the state Federation XC Champ, Mike Hickey (Pearl River) and Eastern States 2 mile champ Bobby Andrews (Shoreham Wading River) will be in the front pack from the start and could provide for fireworks over the last few laps.

Boys RelaysSheepshead Bay and Ramapo are the only two teams that advanced to the state meet with sun 1:30 performances and the pair should battle it out.  Sheepshead Bay’s runners will be coming back to the final after running individual events while Ramapo has been dealing with injury issues.  Gaining the early lead could be key to the win.  If there is a dropped stick or if either team is off look for St John the Baptist, Edison Tech and North Babylon for the possible upset.   Newburgh is only running the 4 x 400 and is the only team under 3:20 entered, but Boys and Girls have been improving week after week and in its last race ran 3:21.38 to win the PSAL title.   The 4 x 800 is all important in the CHSAA and Millrose Games champions Fordham Prep comes in as the top seed with a 7:56.58 clocking.  Also dangerous will be the teams from Arlington, Warwick, Half Hollow Hills and Shenendehowa.

Boys High Jump Sean Reilly (Arlington) jumped a state leading 6’ 10” at the not so jump friendly Jersey City Armory and will be difficult to beat.  There are 4 other jumpers who have cleared 6’6” this winter all who will be in the running for the title.

Boys Long Jump – Four jumpers are separated by 3.25” any one could come out on top.  BJ Murray (Aquinas) and Claudio Dellicarpini (Harriosn) lead the field with a 23’ 3.5” jumps, but they are  followed closely by Maurie Easterling (Spepinac) at 23’ 1” and Brian Archie (Niagra Falls).

Boys Shot Put
– Three throwers have broken the 57’ barrier this year.  Heading the list is Christopher Buck (Frontier) at 57’ 10.50” with Joshua Haghighi (Wheatley) at 57’ 1.75” and John Urschel (Canisius) at 57’ 7” in the hunt for the state crown.
