Highlights

Nichelle Harris anchors wins in the 4x400 (4:20.84) and SM (4:22.96) to lead Rahway to 44-34 win over the defending champion Union girls.
First-year runner, senior Jon Jackson, anchors winning SM (3:44.14), leads off winning 4x800 (8:25.99), and anchors runner-up 4x400 (3:34.36) to help Union edge Rahway, 54-53, for the boys' title.
Rahway boys claim four golds, 4x200 (1:34.41), 4x400 (3:29.65), shuttle hurdles (32.00) and shot put (130-2 1/4), but a baton pass out of the exchange zone in the SM results in DQ and costs team the eight points it wound of gotten for placing second .
First time since the 1970's that the meet is held on an actual track. For the past three decades the county indoor meets have been run on the sliipery gym floor surface of the Dunn Center in Elizabeth.

Story

The Rahway girls and Union boys highlighted a historic day in Union County track lore with some history of its own by grabbing team titles for the first time ever at the Union County Relays yesterday at the Jersey City Armory.

It was the first time since the 1970’s that Union County ran its championship meet on an actual track. For the last few decades, the county meets were held on the slippery and slow 11 laps to a mile gym floor surface of the Dunn Center in Elizabeth.

Junior Nichelle Harris was the catalyst for the Rahway girls, anchoring two victories and running on another scoring relay to lead her team to a surprising, 44-34 win over runner-up and defending champion Union.

Meanwhile, on the boys’ side, Rahway was in control for most of the meet and seemed headed to complete the team sweep, but a mishap in the sprint medley proved costly and Union capitalized, rallying for a 54-53 win.

Rahway, second last year to Union Catholic, was leading Union, 39-26 with just three events to go.

But a baton pass from its second to third man in the sprint medley was out of the exchange zone, resulting in a disqualification. Rahway crossed the line in second place, but had its eight points removed from the scoring.

Union, led by Jon Jackson and Bayaan Oluyadi, won the sprint medley (3:44.14) and the high jump (11-10) to take a 46-43 lead. Union got second in the meet concluding 4x400 to finish off the victory.

Oluyadi anchored Union’s winning 4x800 in 2:05.1, ran 53.5 for the 400 on the victorious SM, and 52.9 on the 4x400. Martin Prokopovich cleared 6-0 and Stanley Pluviose 5-10 for Union in the high jump. Pluviose added a 8.1 leadoff for the runner-up shuttle hurdles team

Jackson, a senior who is running track for the first time this season, anchored the winning SM with a 2:02.2 800 carry, split 52.5 as the anchor on the 4x400, and led off the winning 4x800 with a 2:02.1 as he gave his team the lead fo good.

Jackson said he and his teammates knew that Rahway’s DQ opened the door for them.

``When that happened we knew it would boost us close to them in the standings,’’ said Jackson. ``It gave us a chance and we got it done at the end.’’

Rahway senior Ricky Draughn, who was waiting to receive the baton that was passed out of the zone on the SM, was obviously dejected with the outcome.

``This is tough to take because we were well prepared and wanted to win this so bad since last year,’’ said Draughn. ``But little mistakes just killed us.’’

With the exception of the SM miscue, Rahway had a great meet, winning four of the nine events.

Rahway won the 4x400 in 3:29.65, the shuttles in 32.00, the 4x200 in 1:34.41, the shot put with a 130-2 ¼, and got a surprising second in the distance medley.

Chris Whyte had a 7.7 leading off the shuttles, a 53.8 on the 4x400, and ran on the 4x200.. Draughn ran 2:05 in the DM, and a 51.8 in the 4x400. Russell Jenkiins had 51.3 leading off the 4x400 and ran on the 4x200.

Pierre Darisme had a 7.4 come from behind anchor leg in the shuttles, and Rahway’s Leonardo Marcelin (44-5) and Derrick Hayes (43-10 ¾) had the top two marks of the meet to help Rahway the win the shot put.

For the Rahway girls, Harris came from behind to give her team the win in the SM with a 2:22.2 carry, ran 62.2 as the anchor on the winning 4x400 and ran 3:52.5 for meter 1,200 leg on the fifth-place DM.

Rahway also received clutch performances from Denice Martin and Ernestine Rodgers, who ran on the shuttles, SM and 4x400.

``We are surprised because we just didn’t know what we could do and what the other teams had,’’ said Harris. ``But everyone performed their best and put is in position to win at the end.''

Ines Simoes of Roselle Catholic was one of the top performers of the day. The sophomore came from way back as she blazed a big anchor of 5:09.2 for 1,600 to bring her team across first in the girls’ distance medley relay in 12:56.66. She added a 2:21.1 800 leg for the runner-up SM team (4:

Ugonna Ndu was spectacular for Union. She led off the runner-up shuttle hurdle team with an 8.0 split. She also led off the runner-up 4x200 with a 27.1 carry and ran 61.2 for 400 in the SM.

Union also picked up big points in the shot put as Cristina Vilsaint hurled a peronal best 37-5 ¼, Eboni Lee 31-6 ½, and Ozioma Onyegbule a personal best 31-5 ¼ to give Union the win with a combined 100-5.

Cathy Goncalves led a powerful distance surge by the Johnson girls, third with 30. Goncalves ran 2:31.1 as the anchor on the winning 4x800, and 5:28.8 on the runner-up DM. Johnson also won the high jump behind Emily Vargas’ meet best 5-2.

Danny daCosta had a big day for the Union Catholic boys. He ran 3:15.1 for 1,200 on the winning DM and had a 2:02.5 anchor in the 4x800 to rally his team for second .

Sophomore Natalie Englese of Cranford had a couple big carries for her team. She led off the fifth-place 4x200 with a 27.1, went 60.9 for the 400 as the opening leg in the sprint medley, and 59.4 on the 4x400

Kaprice James continued her impressive freshman season with a 26.9 second leg to give the Roselle girls the lead for good in the 4x200 (1:52.79). she also ran a 62.5 in the 4x400

Isaiah Gill of Plainfield made his season debut, splitting 23.1 for his 200 leg on Plainfield’s third-place 4x200, 52.9 on the 4x400 and 53.1 in the SM. Gill won the Meet of Champions as a junior last spring.
