- Charlestown sr Omar Abdi rips a US#2 2:27.80 1000 meters, just .01 off the US lead, and ran on the winning 4x400
- BC High sr Corey Thomas soared to a big US#2 and meet record 7-00.50 HJ, winning by more than 9 inches. Taylor also won the 55H in 7.60.
- Bromfield sr Emily Jones rolled a US#3 4:54.87 mile, With Framingham sr Camille Murphy also under 5:00 at 4:57.88
- Lincoln-Sudbury sr Ellie Hylton ripped a 2:57.90 1000, just edging Newton South soph Kathy O'Keefe (2:58.07), and ran on the winning 4x800
- Andover jr Chris McConnell zipped to a 6.42 in the 55
- Seekonk jr Johnny Gregorek took the mile in 4:20.57, with four others under 4:25
- Newton South sr Bridget Dahlberg took the 2M in 11:02.08
- Haverhill sr Samantha Stabile took the 300 in 41.07, while younger sister Rebecca (soph) was 2nd in the 600 to Northampton jr Natalia Paine, 1:36.20-1:36.70
- Holliston sr Emmaline Berg took the shot with a meet record 41-09.25
- The boys shot went to Mansfield sr Dan Glavin with 57-04
- Triton Regional jr Deanna Latham took the long jump in 18-03.50
Event Summaries by John Carroll
The Mass. State Track Coaches Assn. Invitational (Saturday) and Elite Meet (Sunday) produced a ton of top marks for Mass and several top national marks as the Massachusetts boys and girls got together at the Reggie Lewis Center for the first big meet of the year. The girls Elite Meet produce 11 number-one performances for Mass this year, 7 number-two’s and 8 number-three’s, as well as a top-ranked girls mile.
The boys Elite Meet produced 7 Mass. number-one marks, 6 number-two’s and 4 number-three’s, as well as two US number-two marks.
GIRLS EVENTS
55 Meters
Hannah Janeczek, the tiny junior from Doherty-Worcester, used great pick up halfway through to run the best time in Mass. this year when she clipped 7.28. She was the sprint queen of the day.
55 Meter Hurdles
Mansfield senior and defending state champion Meghan Ferreira left no doubt as to her fitness as she won in Mass #1 8.40. The surprise was runner-up Deanna Latham (Triton Reg.) in 8.44. Latham was “just trying the hurdles,” but will run the 55 at the States. Cassandra Ryding (Westford Acad.) was third 8.53, the third-best Mass time this winter.
300 Meters
Haverhill senior Samantha Stabile had a great day, but she had to work really hard in this field. Stabile won in 41.07. She ran down Mansfield’s Emily Broyles, who was second in 41.23. Alee Wade (Nashoba Reg.) was third in 41.26, while Shannon Cunningham (Foxboro) ran 41.52 for 4th place. The marks were the top four in Mass. this winter.
600 Meters
Northampton junior Natalia Paine sprinted away from the field at the bell to run the US #10 and Mass #1 time, winning in 1:36.20. Rebecca Stabile (Haverhill) got second in US #12 and Mass #2 in 1:36.70. Starr Nathan (Randolph) was third in the Mass #3 time of 1:37.44
1,000 Meters
This was the first LS-NS battle of the meet. Ellie Hylton (Lincoln-Sudbury), Kathy O’Keefe (Newton South) and Shauna McNiff (Hingham) blasted away from the start. Hylton waited until the 800 and then moved into the lead; she could not drop O’Keefe or McNiff, but held the slim lead all the way from the bell to the finish. Hylton ran 2:57.90, #7 US and # 1Mass. O’Keefe crossed in 2:58.07, US#9 and Mass #2, while NcNiff hit 2:59.91 for Mass #3. In the first section, Carolyn Ranti (Newton North) bested Juliet Ryan-Davis (Newton South), 3:00.41 to 3:00.57.
One Mile Run
Trying to keep up the Joneses is hard in Mass., especially the way Emily does it. Emily Jones did not go to the lead until the 880, but then gradually applied pressure on the field. No one responded, except Camille Murphy (Framingham), who went with Jones for a lap. Murphy tried gamely to hold on, but she couldn’t, as Jones kept up the pressure. Jones ran a #3 US time, and a #1 Mass 4:54.87. Murphy held at 4:57.88, under 5 for the first time and a 12-second PR. Jones could be a factor in the Boston Indoor Games next weekend. Great negative split for Jones.
Two Mile Run
Newton South senior Bridget Dahlberg ran an impressive race to run the US #3 and Mass #1 time winning easily in11:02.08. Margo Gillis, a Newton North sophomore, was second in 11:14.22, Mass #2 and her PR. Rosie Keogh (Hollisotn), won the mile/two mile double in her league meet the previous night, and finished third in 11:15.33 for Mass #3
Long Jump
Triton Reg. junior Deanna Latham soared 18’ 03.5” for Mass #1 and US #16. This was Latham’s first time at Reggie this winter. Janelle McNeil (Bishop Feehan-Attleboro) hit her indoor PR with 17’00.50” to finish second.
Shot Put
Emmaline Berg (Holliston) left no doubt she’s the best thrower in the state as she upped her state lead with a meet record toss of 41’ 09.25”. The former meet record was 41’06.25 by Heather Oldham (Woburn) 1999. Nallsi Mbinda (Newton South) was second with a Mass #4 toss of 39’ 06.50”.
High Jump
Janelle Clarkson (Seekonk) remained undefeated this season as she won in 5’04”. Seven girls jumped 5’04” and places were decided on misses. When it was all sorted out, Clarkston was followed Alish Hanley (Westford Acad), Maggie Flemming (Lincoln-Sudbury), Samantha Stabile (Haverhill), Laura Weeks (Oliver Ames), and Lucile Cancre (Lexington).
4 x 200 Relay
It does not usually happen – winning two years in a row – but North Attleborough was able to do it. Carolyn Udall, Christy Deininger, and Lauren Goldberg stayed close for NA. The thrills were reserved for anchor Julianne Cappadona, who passed two teams on the home straight to give her team two consecutive wins in a state-leading 1:46.82. Shrewsbury was second in 1:47.41 for Mass #2 and Attleboro third in Mass #3 1:47.43.
4 x 400 Relay
There was no doubt here – Mansfield with two state champs in the first two legs, was after the win. Hurdle champ Meghan Ferreira was a step back on her leg, then 300 runner-up Emily Broyles went right to the front. Erika Unger and Michelle Jenssen stayed in front at Mansfield ran the Mass #1 in 4:04.34. Haverhill was second (4:06.20).
4 x 800 Relay
The second defending champion relay team was Lincoln-Sudbury. The stick went from Cali Pappas to Marike Crowe to Andrea Keklek. Keklek sprinted to the front after two laps and passed a 20-yard lead to 1,000 champ Ellie Hylton. Hylton powered L-S to the Mass #1 of 9:39.87 and a second straight Elite championship. Weymouth was second in 9:46.31.

BOYS
55 Meters
Andover’s Chris McConnell kept his winning sprint streak intact sprinting 6.42 for a big 0.20 margin over runner up Josh Adams (Methuen) 6.62.
55 Hurdles
This is Corey Thomas’s (BC High) number two event, even though he has not lost a race this season. Thomas won the Winter Fest, at Dartmouth and now the Elite meet here in 7.60. Yong-Hyun Cho (Newton South) was second in 7.73.
300 Meters
Jimm Guerrier (Brockton) (36.10) surprised the field as he inched by Kamal Riley (Charlestown) (36.17) and Casey O’Brien (Seekonk) (36.24) for the win.
600 Meters
Paul Connor (Milton) let everyone lead, and then took it away on the last straight, to win in 1:23.31. Connor got by Nick Wade (No. Attleborough) 1:23.32, David Brown (Chelmsford) 1:23.45 and Paul Grafov (Dartmouth) 1:23.99 in the last 20 meters of the race.
1,000 meters – 2:27.80 #2 US (by .01)
The place went LOUD for Abdi. Omar left no doubt he was after something. He opened a large lead at 400 (58.7). He then went through 600 (1:28.2) increasing his lead. Timed at 1:58.7, Omar seemed to slow a bit going 30.6 on his fourth 200. But he was buoyed by the crowd and picked up his sprint for home. He crossed in 2:27.80, a meet record, and the number two in the US (by .01). Joe Doyle (Nashoba Reg) was second in 2:32.64.
One Mile Run
Johnny Gregorek made his mark (Remember the name Gregorek? Both parents were Georgetown greats) as he smashed a pretty good field with a huge sprint with four laps to go. When Johnny went to the lead, he just kept sprinting away from the field. Gregorek’s time was a PR 4:20.57 and a Mass #2. Bryon Jones (Westborough) was second in 4:23.78.
Two Mile
This race had the thrill of the day. With four laps to go there were five runners in the lead group when Anthony Taylor (Arlington) burst to the lead, gradually moving ahead of everyone, except Conor Grogan (Hudson) and Jonathan Gault (Beford). Gault slipped back ahead as they entered the home straight. But the huge presence of Grogan loomed on the outside as he pushed for home. The last ten meters had Grogan and Taylor side by side to the finish with Grogan winning in 9:30.00 and Taylor in 9:30.92.
High Jump – 7’00.50” #2 US
This was “the event of the meet” as Boston College H.S. senior Corey Thomas broke the meet record, soaring 7’ 00.50”. It was Thomas’s first time over seven. Thomas cleared 5’11(1st try), 6’01” (2nd), and 6’05” (1st) to win the event, then 6’09” (1st) and 7’00.50” (3rd). He finally missed three times a t 7’01”.
The former meet record was 7’00.25” by Greg Gonsalves, (Falmouth HS) 1981. This is the # 2 jump in the US this season.
Shot Put
Mansfield’s Dan Glavin hit 57’04”, for a PR, and Mass #1 mark. Sam Bombaugh (Falmouth) was second in 56’ 10.25”.
Long Jump
New Bedford owns the long jump. Jon Williams, a junior, hit his best of the season to win at 22’00”. Phito Gondre, a New Bedford soph, was third in 21’ 06.5”. Sandwiched between them was Newton South’s Ross McDonald with a 21’07”.
4 x 200 Relay
Speed kills! Andover knows that and uses it early. This time they moved spring champ Chris McConnell from first to second leg. Good move as McConnell took the pass from Brendon Crawford and pulled away quickly and brought home about a ten-meter lead. That was the race as Mark Vetere and Kerrick Stevens ran the final legs and finished off the 1:31.78 to win. Lexington was second in 1:34.47.
4 x 400 Relay
Andover almost pulled it off, running Vetere and Stevens in back to back relays. But Omar Abdi spoiled the show as he screamed from third place, 10 meters back, to pull ahead just entering the home straight to give the Charlestown boys the win in 3:28.85. Andover was second in 3:29.52, with Oliver Ames (3:30.53), Mansfield (3:30.83) and Oliver Ames (3:30.85) all falling to the Abdi sprint.
4 x 800 Relay
St. John’s HS (Shrewsbury) took the lead with Kevin Turner’s first leg. Then Chris Tieuli, brother Cameron and Ben Perron powered to an 8:10.38, #1 in Mass. Hudson was second in 8:14.13.
