STORY

Morris Hills and Laura Vigilante were waiting all season to run a race that matched their talent.

It finally came yesterday when both broke out with scintilating performances at the Morris County Championships at the Kraft Foods Complex in East Hanover.

Sean Pohorence led the charge for Morris Hills, winning his second straight title in a blazing 16:08.8, the fourth fastest time in course history as Morris Hills won its second straight title and fifth in the past six years with 42 points. Morris Hills, No. 6 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, jammed four runners in the top nine and averaged 16:58.8 to beat No. 5 Mendham, second with 61.

Morris Hills, which extended its county record to 18 titles, had lost its last two meetings with Mendham and evened up the season series with them at 2-2.

Meanwhile, Vigilante, a junior at Mendham who had seen her times slow down considerably due to a long bout with a sinus infection, returned to her old form with a decisive win in the girls race in 19:12.3, the fifth fastest time in the 21 years this course has been used. Vigilante is Mendham’s first champion since 1984.

Randolph, No. 5 in The Star-Leger Top 20, showed its depth by putting three runners in the top 12 and winning by 25 points as it overcame an off day from its top runner to capture its first girls’ team title since 1999.

The victory by the Morris Hills boys gave it a reason to finally celebrate something after what had been a frustrating season up to this point and avenged its 31-35 loss to Mendham at the Iron Hills Conference Championships a couple weeks ago.

Morris Hills started the season ranked No. 11 in the nation, but it never ran up to its potential until yesterday when coach Sean Robinson’s pack put together its best race of the season.
``If there is ever such a thing as a must win in cross-countrythis was it,'' said Robinson. ``We've all along said n was ever such as

Pohorence continued his magical senior season going as he became the firist boy to repeat as champion since Steve Slattery of Mount Olive won his fourth in a row in 1997. Pohorence is the eighth boy to win two straight in the 55 year history of the meet.

The Harvard-bound Pohorence crossed the first mile mark in 5:02. After a 5:34 second mile, Pohorence had just a two second lead on Franklin. But a big final half mile erased any doubt about the outcome as Pohorence and Franklin finished 1-2 for the second straight year. >
The remainder of Morris Hills’ top five after Pohorence were Liam Tansey,, third in 16:41.6.2, Vinny Chiusano, eighth in 17:09.3, Tyler Hendrickson, ninth in 17:11.2, and Lucas Clyne, 21st in 17:43.2.

It was a breakout race for Chiusano, who was Morris Hills’ sixth man at the conference meet.

``It was time for us to turn our season around,’’ said Chiusano. ``We got off a slow start this season, but sometimes you can’t judge the strength of a team by its wins and loses. Sometimes you have to look at how a team can battle back from adversity and overcome obstacles. We ran our best race today and with the championships season here now, we are peaking at the right time.’’

Franklin said without Frick, who was seventh in the county race last year, Mendham couldn't afford to have an off race from anyone. .
``We couldn't make any mistakes if we wanted to win, but at the same time, they (Morris Hills) ran a great race,'' said Franklin. ``We knew they were capable of it and they went out and did what they had to do.''

Vigilante, who struggled to place fourth at the Iron Hills Conference meet on Oct. 21, is Mendham's first county champion since Terry Reinman in 1984. She said she wasn’t sure what to expect when she took the starting line since she’d gone over a month since running a race at full strength.

``Yesterday was the first time in a month that I really felt better,’’ she said. ``But I still didn’t know how I’d run. The sinus infection made it so hard to breath that I was always feeling fatigued right from the start of races. But today was different. Today, I knew right after the start that I was going to run well. To win this is such a relief because I just never knew if I’d ever get healthy enough to have a good season.’’

Vigilante ran a 5:58 first mile and led Tori Berard of Morris Knolls by a step, but by the time she two miles in 12:33, Vigilante had a 14 second gap on Berard.

``I was feeling good the whole race and didn’t want to take any chances so I just kept pushing until I got to the finish,’’ said Vigilante. ``It’s an unbelievable feeling to get my season back on track. This means so much to me.’’

In the girls team race, Randolph sophomore Joelle Amaral, a pre-race favorite to win, had a subpar day, finishing 12th. But Natalie Anthony (sixth), Molly Higgins (seventh), Rebecca Snelson (19th) and Jennifer Zackowski (20th) proved that it can survive when one runner isn’t at their best.

``I could see that Joelle was hitting the wall, but I also knew that the others girls would pick it up and we’d still be able to win,’’ said Anthony. ``You can’t have everyone run their best every time, but if you’re deep enough you can still come out on top. We knew that we haven’t won this in a long time, so it’s very satisfying to come out on top in such a strong county. Our goal all seaon was to win the conference, county and sectionals, so now we have just more to go to get all three.''

What a day it was for the Madison girls.
Under first year coach Cathy O’Brien (the Morris County cross country champion in 1992 for Morris Catholic) finished second to Randolph, it's highest finish in the 36 year history of the girls county meet. It's previous best was in 1983 when it was third. Madison's finish was a remarkable improvement over last year when it finished 12th. And Mallory Anderson, second in 19:50.8, recorded the highest finish for a Madison girl in meet history. Anderson 's time also placed her 24th all-time on the Kraft Foods course.

PREVIEW

Senior Mike Franklin knows he and his Mendham teammates have a chance at making history. Sean Pohorence hopes his Morris Hills team will be able to turn its season around.

Which team prevails will be part of the intrigue when the two rivals clash for a fourth time this season at the Morris County Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

Mendham, # 5 in New Jersey, heads into the race full of confidence after beating # 6 Morris Hills by four points for its first Hills Division title at the Iron Hills Conference Championships on Oct. 21. Mendham has won two of three matchups with Morris Hills this season, including the last two.

But Mendham has never won a county title.

"We're running at a different level than we ever have before," Franklin said. "This is our best shot at winning the county and we'll try to follow the same pattern that worked at the conference race when we went out hard and didn't worry about dying at the end. If everyone runs the way they can, I think we can pull it off."

Franklin said there's a chance Mendham could be without the services of James Frick, one of its top runners who is coming off an illness.

Meanwhile, Morris Hills, the defending champion, is hoping to finally run a race that it feels is a true measure of its talent. Morris Hills came into the season nationally ranked and were considered a threat to win the Meet of Champions.

"We've gone a long time without a good race, but we see this race as a great opportunity to get us headed in the right direction," said the Harvard-bound Pohorence, favored to win his second straight title. "One thing we've learned through all the trials and tribulations of the season is to never stop believing in ourselves. We know we're capable of running better than we have, and, with all the big races coming up, now would be a great time to do that. We're highly motivated and want to win this pretty bad."

Pohorence, coming off a course-record 15:35.0 at the Iron Hills meet at Freedom Park in Randolph, isn't thinking about the course record at Kraft of 15:59.9 set in 2005 by Ben Massam of Chatham.

"I am just looking to get that No. 1 spot and I know it won't be easy with guys like Franklin and Pat Schellberg (Delbarton) pushing hard."

Randolph is likely to generate the biggest headlines in the girls' race.

The Randolph girls have not captured the county title since 1999, but this particular group, coached by Len Pietrewicz, is as close to a slam dunk as the Roxbury teams were the last four years.

Randolph, #5 in the Top 20, is balanced by a talented young squad, which first began making waves at the 2007 Penn Relays, when Molly Higgins, Natalie Anthony and Tori Kiss -- all freshmen then -- helped Randolph qualify for the prestigious 4x800-meter relay Championship of America race.

Now those three are juniors and they fortify a powerful squad. Sophomore Rebecca Snelson and freshman Jennifer Zackowski ran fourth and fifth, respectively, for Randolph at the Iron hills Conference meet Oct. 21.

The front-runner for this group is sophomore Joelle Amaral, who placed third last year in 19:27 and is the favorite for the individual title. Amaral will be chased by Chatham's Jesse Villars and Kat Grimes, Tori Berard of Morris Knolls and Mary Migton of Roxbury. Villars' status depends on whether she has recovered from a case of shin splints, which kept her out of the Iron Hills meet.

Amaral could knock down two barriers on Saturday. A victory would make her the first Randolph girl to capture the title since Stephanie Snyder won her second county title in 1997. Amaral, who owns school records for three different courses, could make it four if she can eclipse the 19:18 set by Snyder at Kraft (then called Nabisco) when she won her first title in 1995. Amaral's personal best at Kraft is that 19:27 from last season.
