Jim Lambert's race report

Lanie Thompson wasn’t going to be denied this time.

A year after she missed the course record in muddy conditions by just six seconds, Thompson, a senior at Voorhees, smashed it with a remarkable time of 17:28 to win her fourth straight title at the Hunterdon-Warren Championships on the 3.1-mile course at Delaware Valley in Alexandria.

Thompson’s 17:28 was nearly a minute faster than the course record as she led three runners under the former mark of 18:22 set in 1987 by legendary Jodie Bilotta of North Hunterdon.

Behind Thompson, who hit the first mile in 5:23, and her teammate, runner-up Colette Whitney (18:18), Voorhees, No. 2 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, averaged a blistering 19:01 and won its seventh straight girls’ title, 38-53, over runner-up and No. 13 Hunterdon Central.

Julia Mark of Delaware Valley also ran under Bilotta’s former mark, placing third in 18:19.

Thompson, who is taking an official visit to Oregon this weekend, is the only girl to ever win four Hunterdon-Warren titles. No girl has ever won more than two since the meet began in 1991.

In the boys competition, Hunterdon Central placed five runners in front of Phillipsburg’s fourth man to key its second championship in a row, 32-54, over runner-up Phillipsburg.

Matt McDonald of North Hunterdon ran 16:33 to edge Hank Ashforth of Hunterdon Central (16:36) for individual honors.

But Ashforth’s finish did help catapult Hunterdon Central to the team title. Hunterdon Central crammed its first five finishers into the top 10 in a great display of depth.

Joining Ashforth in the top 10 were teammates Mike Saparito, third in 16:37, Josh Spooner, eighth in 16:59, Alex Parola, ninth in 17:01, and Ryan Zullo, 10th in 17:15.

The victory gives Hunterdon Central plenty of momentum heading into its showdown with Somerset County champion Bridgewater-Raritan at the Skyland Conference Championships this Thursday at Pleasant Valley Park in Bernards Township. Hunterdon Central is the defending champion.

For the runner-up Hunterdon Central girls, Brigitte Mania was seventh in 19:19, Allison Payenski, eighth in 19:24, and Jessica Krystek,, ninth in 19:25.
