New York Federation Champion Leuchanka to attend college close to home

Financial concerns the deciding factor

Future coach, campus setting, your future teammates, majors offered are all factors athletes looking to compete in college weightin their college decision.  In these tight economic times money is more and more becoming a factor, but for New York Federation Champion Alex Leuchanka (Shenendehowa) it was the deciding factor in his choosing the University of Albany to attend starting in the fall of 2009.

During the summer Leuchanka and his mother moved from the Warwick school district to the Albany area for her to take a new position as a nurse.  Leuchanka did not want his college education to be a burden on his family so when Albany offered a full scholarship his decision was made.  “ This choice had a lot of factors considered in it. Generally the choice I was making had a huge impact on my family financially so the full scholarship offer Albany made was large role in the matter”, said Leuchanka.

“Coach Fazioli of Albany has been talking to me closely since she was allowed to by the NCAA rules which was nice because really wasn't so heavily recruited up until I won Federations. Albany now with the new distance coaching staff of coach Jones and Fazioli are trying to develop a good consistent program. They recruited a very talented freshman class last year, and I want to be a part of a new development that they have going on right now. The team aspect of it being a very good all around track program in all events was very appealing to me, and most of all I plan on majoring in Biology leading to Pre-Med and hopefully become a doctor some day, and its something that Albany can offer on the Academics side of it as well, “ Leuchanka went on to say.  Being close to home was also a factor for the Federation champion, “All this being that the University is about 10-15 Miles from home still would allow me to help my Mom with anything that she would need.”  In closing Leuchanka added, “Albany in my opinion generally had the whole package that was looking for and, the balance between the Academic/Athletic as well as my future seemed pretty balanced in the way that appealed to me.
