A 2nd place finish at the New York Class “C” Cross Country Championships as a junior put Newark Valley’s Erin Cawley (photo left on her way to winning the McQuaid Invite - photo by John Nepolitan) into the spotlight from there she would continue to be a force in New York State.  Cawley ended her junior campaign with another 2dn place finish, this in the New York State 2000 meter steeplechase to eventual national champion Shelby Greany(Suffern).    The 2008 cross country season saw Cawley run off a string of victories including wins at the Chittenango Invitational,  McQuaid Invitational, the Section 4 Championships and the New York State Class “C” races.  All the time Cawley was weighing her options for college, looking at such schools as Cornell, Columbia, Providence, Boston College, and Syracuse.  Following an 11th place at the New York Federation meet it was onto the Foot Locker Northeast Regional where Cawley crossed the line 8th punching her ticket to the finals in California.  Before she boarded a plane west, Cawley decided to put her college decision behind her and has chosen to attend Syracuse in the fall.  For Cawley the choice was an easy one, “  Syracue has a successful program, great coaches, a great team, and they're only going to get better.  My top five choices were Cornell, Columbia, Providence, Boston College, and 'Cuse, but after making some official visits it was Syracuse where I could see myself being the happiest and most successful.  Although SU doesn't have a long history of NCAA qualifications and titles, they made it to the NCAA Championships this year for the first time with alot of underclassmen.  I know that Chris Fox and Brien Bell are going to get the team there every year and do some damage.  I'm glad I'm going to be part of it next season and I hope that I can help them to get there.  Now I can relax a little more and enjoy San Diego the next couple days!”
