Sean Pohorence ran the fastest time in course history and his Morris Hills team broke the record for the best average ever run at Freedom Park.
But even that wasn't enough to prevent Mendham from scoring one of its biggest victories in school history yesterday in Randolph.
Mendham overcame Pohorence's record time of 15:35.0 and Morris Hills' Freedom Park-best average of 16:22.7, and a lost shoe from one runner and a mid-race injury to another in earning its first Hills Division title. The victory broke Morris Hills' streak of six straight championships.
Mendham, No. 5 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, finished first with 31 points. No. 6 Morris Hills had 35.
Morris Hills was leading, 18-19, after four runners crossed for both teams, but Mendham senior James Frick, who suffered back problems during the race, placed 12th, five spots ahead of Morris Hills' No. 5, to clinch the victory.
Mendham, which averaged 16:24.6 (No. 2 in course history) received personal bests from senior Mike Franklin, second in 15:51.7, No. 7 in course history; senior Ryan Savercool, fourth in 16:16.6; junior Chris Herridge, sixth in 16:26.8, and senior Jon Riley, seventh in 16:34.6.
Mendham freshman Peter Ehmann, a potential scorer, had a shoe come off in the first quarter mile when someone clipped his heel.
"Our program has come a long way since I was a freshman," Franklin said. "We've been training a long time for this and our 2-3-4 runners really stepped up for us today."
Three years ago, Mendham had 13 runners in its program and was fourth at the conference meet, 98 points behind first-place Morris Hills.
Pohorence, whose 15:35.0 broke the Freedom Park record of 15:37.6 set in 2005 by Ben Massam of Chatham, hit the first mile in 5:03 and the second mile in 10:07 (three seconds ahead of Franklin).
"With about 1,200 to go he (Franklin) started dropping back and I just focused on trying to get the record," said Pohorence, who won for the second straight year. "When I saw the clock at 15:20-something I knew I had to pick it up."
* Randolph swept the Iron Division titles.
The boys avenged a one-point dual meet loss to Morristown by winning its third straight title with 44 points. Livingston was second with 68 and Morristown third with 69. Randolph, averaging a school-record 16:55.3, was led by senior Louis Catizone, fourth in a personal-best 16:35. "Since the loss to Morristown, we've been thinking about this race," Catizone said. "We didn't want to have that bad taste in our mouth again."
The Randolph girls, No. 5 in The Star-Ledger Top 20, hammered the field en route to its first team title in 11 years, 36-78 over runner-up
Roxbury, which had its title streak snapped at four.
Sophomore Joelle Amaral led the way, winning in 18:55.3. She's the first Randolph girl to claim the title since Stephanie Snyder won back-to-back titles in 1997-98.
Randolph's next target is the Morris County Championships, Nov. 1 at the Kraft Foods complex in East Hanover.
"Obviously this matters to us a great deal," said Randolph junior Natalie Anthony, second for her team and third overall in 19:14.7. "We proved in invitationals that we were a team to beat. Now is the time that we have to prove that we're not just all talk. Winning in September was nice, but these are the meets that matter the most."
In the Hills Division, Kat Grimes of Chatham won her first championship since last fall in 19:16.4. Grimes, the North Jersey, Section 2, Group 2 champion last fall, is the first Chatham girl to win a conference title since Laura Wissolik won the 1994 Colonial Hills Conference title. Chatham has been a member of the Iron Hills Conference since 2003.
