3/23-3/29 Notables
  • They're just getting started Although Arcadia is still two weeks away, California athletes had a huge weekend, accounting for 17 of the 31 entries.  Foremost were Reggie Wyatt, who ripped an eye-popping 46.67 400/36.59 300H double (just 40 min. apart), and Kori Carter, who secured her spot atop the 100H and 400H lists.
  • Girls relay wars By adding a 46.47 4x100 to its 1:45.30 800 SMR, Rancho Verde CA has established itself as a top short sprint power in this early season.  Likewise, Serra CA's US#1 3:46.86 4x400 shows what a difference Turquoise Thompson - like Wyatt, now back in the prep ranks - can make.  Expect possible changes next week, though, as the Texas Relays looms large.  Dallas Skyline still firmly has the 4x200 lead.
  • Making a name Still speaking of Californians, raise your hand if you live outside the Golden State and were familiar with Lance Goldsmith and Toby Villalva before this week.  Those two were not among the nationally known names in XC last fall, but now they top the 3k and 3200 lists at 8:28.54 and 8:59.45.
  • Track EC/New Bern ... again After taking a few shots at the 1600 sprint medley USR indoors, but missing it, the speedsters from New Bern made sure their first outdoor shot at the record book was a good one.  Don't expect that 3:19.58 to be topped by anyone else this year.  Finally getting pushed - as they did by collegians at the Raleigh Relays - obviously didn't hurt.
  • The power of the dual meet Californians Nick Ross and Anna Jelmini don't need a big invitational to get motivated for big marks.  Ross went 7-03 HJ and 49-00.50 TJ in dual meet action this week and the last, while Jelmini again revised her discus leader at 180-05.
