German Hernandez Riverbank HS, x, senior

How he got here: 1st, Foot Locker West, 14:53

Biggest wins:
1st CIF D4 State, 14:24 (breaks Marc Davis 86 record)
1st Stanford Invite, 14:xx (couple more)

Has he been beaten? No, German is unbeaten this fall

National coming out party: He got some major props as a soph when he had the fastest overall time at the 2005 CIF State meet, but then lost time to injury. The buzz for him started very early this fall as his streak of healthy training grew. His most high-profile win leading up to state was at Stanford

Pivotal race: CIF meet two weeks ago really confirmed that he should be at least a national co-favorite

Cause for hope: Arguably the best single race in the country this year at CIF. Fewer high-pressure races than his foes.

Cause for concern: This will be his first national championship race in track or XC, and really only the second time in XC that he’s been tested at this level (last weekend was the first)

Bottom Line: It took awhile for some of the country to catch on (including yours truly), but after his CIF race, no one could argue that German was at least the equal of anyone in the country, if not the very best. If he runs to his potential, he should win or at least take second.
