2009 AAA Boys State Meet Preview

A guide to the 2009 Illinois AAA Boys State Cross Country Meet

Michael Newman - Dyestat Illinois

Joe Newton and his York Dukes go after State Title #27 at Detweiller Park this Saturday.  AAA Boys race time: 2:00 PM

So many storylines embrace this weekend's AAA Boys state meet. The run for the individual championship may be a one man show for Sandburg
Sophomore sensation Lukas Verzbicas. The team title comes down to former champs Neuqua Valley and York going up against the new
big gun Loyola Academy. Here is a look of what to watch for on Saturday:

The Trojans were left for dead after the Palatine Invite at the end of September. The flu bug had hit the squad like a brick. A month later, here
they are, ready to run in the state meet. Everything for Cary Grove starts and ends with Phil Fairleigh. Finally recovered from an early season
bout with mono, the Duke Recruit has come on strong winning the Regional and Sectional. One of the keys of success for this team is the gap
between 1 & 2. Matt Klein and Eddy Gibbons are good backups to Fairleigh. The gap between 1 / 2 needs to be around 40 seconds. The overall
1-5 split has to be near 55 seconds for Cary Grove to have success.

The Tigers have been licking their wounds after being defeated by conference rival 3 straight times. Yet, this Edwardsville squad has found its
way to Detweiller Park. A good duo upfront with Garrett Sweatt and Dan Mazar leading the way. The big area of concern the last few meets has
been the gap between 2 and 3. The split needs to be around 30 seconds here. Chris Taglieri ran last week at sectionals; they will need him
at full strength. The split on 1-5 the last 4 meets has been around 100 seconds. It needs to be much closer for Edwardsville to be in the top 10.

After last week's disaster at Niles West, the Dukes will look to rebound at state...just the position Coach Joe Newton likes to be in, the underdog.
Andrew Smith and Jack Driggs have been the lead men for York. Smith has been in the hunt against Composto of Loyola the last two times
they faced...will third time be a charm. If the Dukes want to contend, some things need to happen...Ron Hedman has the capability and talent to be within 25 seconds of Smith / Driggs. The split between 1 to 5 has to be around 40 seconds for state championship #27. York has been up and down all season. Last week was a down meet...the tradition of the Men of York is always running good at state. York may have set the rest of the state up for this weekend.

After placing 22nd at the Peoria Woodruff Invite, not even the biggest Geneva fan could have dreamed that this team would make it to state. After
the return of Kevin McDowell from The World Junior Triathlon Championships, the Vikings have taken off. Kevin McDowell and Kevin Sparks have
pushed each other in practice and in meets and have formed a formable duo. Expect both of these runners to be in the top 20 on Saturday. The
split between 2 and 3 has been anywhere from 30 to 50 seconds...it needs to be closer to the 30 for this team to be in the top 10.

They had Neuqua Valley beat at 2 miles at the Lockport Sectional. But the #2 team in the state pulled away from the Lions in that last mile. Still,
that effort has given this squad confidence going into this weekend's State Meet. Sam Telfer looks ready to challenge for a top 10 finish individually
on Saturday. The key to any Lyons team is their 1 /5 split...last weekend was their best of the season. Mike Moore and Robbie Kucera have
stepped up to stay within 15 seconds of Telfer...can they do that on Saturday? Coach Michael Danner will need to have a big race from Andrew
Allabastro, who has been up and down the last couple of weeks. A hot team...will be flirting with a trophy on Saturday.

The Bears did not have their best race of the season...and they were lucky to get out of the ultra-tight Schaumburg Sectional. But last Saturday is
gone...a new meet lies ahead for Lake Zurich. Andrew Morrison should have a big race this Saturday. Last weekend, he fell 800 meters into
the race and was never able to recover. Paul Geimer ran the best race of the season last Saturday and will look to build off of that. Lake Zurich
has success when their 1 - 5 split is around 45 seconds. This will be the case on Saturday if this team wants to place high.

The Porters return to run at the state meet in what seems to be an eternity. Lockport did what it needed to do and qualified on their home course.
Joe Oldendorf has recovered ,after breaking a leg last season and with some injury problems early in the season, to run a great sectional
race. He joins a formable pair in David Sajdak and David Inczauskis in what Lockport hopes will lead to state meet success on Saturday. If these
guys can stay within 15 seconds of each other and be in the top 50 will lead to a high team finish. The 1-5 split needs to be under 50 seconds.

At the beginning of the season, it looked like this young squad would have growing pains through the season. But as it progressed, this team
grew up and became a force to be dealt with. After finishing with its best sectional finish ever, Minooka looks to improve on last season's
state meet appearance. This team thrives on a tight pack led by Sophomores Kyle Smith and Ben Heide. They will need a big race from their
only senior in theop 50 line up, Sean Coyle. Watch for the split to be around 30 seconds. Coach Kevin Gummerson needs a runner to be in the
top 50 to make this split meaningful.

The key for the key for the Maroons on Saturday is controlling their 1 to 5 split. The last few weeks, it has been between 80 and 90 seconds. It
needs to be closer at Detweiller. Junior Alec Stojanovic and Senior Michael Castel lead this team and have the possibility of placing in the
top 35. The 2 /3 gap needs to be around 40 seconds to help towards the success of this squad.

The Knights ran their best split of the season in placing 2nd at the Schaumburg Sectional. Mid Suburban League Champ Chris Spudic has
emerged as one of the better runners in the state and will look for a top 10 finish on Saturday. Teammates Albert Ciolek and Kellan Strobel have
been getting closer and closer to Spudic and would like to continue that trend at State. If Spudic can finish high and this team stays within
30 seconds of each other, they could be in the hunt for a trophy.

While Loyola and York have been going head to head this season, Neuqua Valley has quietly climbed into position to claim its second state
championship in the last 3 years. If you want define quietly as scoring a perfect 15 at their conference meet or running 30 second 1/5 splits,
then I would call it a quiet roar. Aaron Beattie has put himself in position to challenge for the individual championship. David Wing has grown
into a runner that has the capability in placing in the top 20 on Saturday. This team lives and dies with the pack. This team is 10 runners
deep...anyone of them can step in without this team losing a step. For this team to win on Saturday, it will need 2 runners in the top 20 and
their next 3 in the top 50.

The defending state champs look to be back in that championship stride after winning the St Charles East Sectional last Saturday. It will be
interesting to watch Tyler Jermann run this weekend. This senior has not been pushed, so to speak, in the meets he has been in. He should
be in the top 5. Teammate Bob Guthrie is in great shape and could join Jermann in the top 10. The big goal for David Racey's team will be
keeping the gap between 2 and 3 under 40 seconds. Sophomores Karsten Jurkiewicz and Nick Drendel lead the second group that stays
within 10 seconds of each other.

injuries hurt them...this team gets the opportunity to redeem itself at State. Drew Kerscheiter leads this team as their #1 runner. Junior
Bryce Basting compliments Kerscheiter well as the 2nd man. The key for this tea.m is the 1/5 split. When they run between 50 and 55 seconds,
this team is tough. This will need to happen on Saturday.

After an injury to one of its top runners Andrew Mack, Fremd's chances to qualify for state were thought to take a hit. But the Vikings ran a tough
race on Saturday to make it to state. Aaron Ferst placed 34th last season and will look to improve on that finish. What could hurt Fremd is their
1 - 5 split. It has been 55 seconds...their team place could be higher if that split goes lower.

Overlooked...that was the word that came out of the Maine South camp after they again qualified for state. The split on this squad has diminished
the last few weeks. Dave Eckhart, Mike Moore, and Sean Senf are a strong group that has the talent to place in the top 30. The key is keeping their
split under 30 seconds to have a shot in the top 30 along with having a runner in the top 25. If this doesn't happen, then another "over" word could
be used...but this team has the toughness to take a shot at a trophy.

the shot of placing in the top 25. Alex Deeter started the season as the team's 6th man, now he is #2 and is one of the key's to this team's
success. It will have a strong finish if their split is under 54 seconds.

running as tough as nails and will be one of the individual favorites on Saturday. Mark Donohue and Jack Seeberg are strong possibilities for
a top 15 finish. Tommy Beddome had not been within 80 seconds of Composto this fall...last week he was within 45 seconds of him. Can
Beddome maintain this for one more week? The key for this team is keeping Patrick Smith within 25 seconds of Composto. Also, the 1-5
split needs to be within 45 seconds...this happening can bring a state championship to Wilmette.

Tommy King (front) and Noah Graboys provide a solid 1-2 punch for the Trevians of New Trier.
Tommy King and Noah Graboys lead the Trevians to the state meet. These two run
side by side, regardless of the size of the meet. Expect the same thing to happen on
Saturay. The gap beteen these two and Sophomore Leland Later needs to be around
35 seconds. This team could place high if this happens.

Team Overview

I think there are some fans giving this crown to Loyola Academy...not so fast. Loyola has proven themselves
all season and deserve the rating they have earned. Neuqua Valley is running so strong right now with a tight pack...
they could steal the championship away from the Ramblers. Let us not forget about York...even though they did not look
good at Niles West, that mystique still lives on in Elmhurst...never count them out.

Lyons Township is running better and better....so is Palatine. Nothing will be guaranteed until after the last man crosses
the finish line. This will be close....watch for the team score to be between 120 to 140 for the winner.

Individual Overview

Dundee Crown's Anthony Manfrin looks to finish in the top ten this Saturday in Peoria
The individual race could be called beat the clock...will Lukas Verzbicas go after 13:50.6? He has the talent to accomplish this,
will his achilles let him do so? The Sandburg sophomore will look to push the pace early. The question is will anyone go with him.
To do that could be almost certain suicide.

There are several runners that could be up for the challenge. Tyler Jermann of Naperville North has not really been challenged so
far this fall...he has the strength to go after Verzbicas.

Nico Composto of Loyola is running for a team championship....he is a team man, but will he be tempted to go after the Sandburg runner?

Andrew Smith of York has been outkicked twice this year by Composto...will this happen a 3rd time?

Phil Fairleigh of Cary-Grobe was jinxed at state meets last season. This is a new year...will he exorcise the demons
that haunted him at state last year?

Pat Lesiewicz of Schaumburg ran 14:25 at Peoria Notre Dame...does he still have that effort in him?

Aaron Beattie of Neuqua Valley will also be in the lead pack...others to watch include Jack Driggs of York, Mark Donohue and Jack seeberg
of Loyola, Anthony Manfrin of Crown, Martin Grady of Fenwick, Bob Guthrie of Naperville North, Kevin McDowell of Geneva
Michael Scolarici of O'Fallon, and Malachy Schrobiligen of Oak Park.
