Cary-Grove ran its best race so far this season and make it out of the brutually tough St. Charles East Sectional with a 5th
place finish. Phil Fairleigh has been a rock since Peoria and will be one of the top individuals this coming weekend. Bill
Roth has the opportunity to be all-state with a great race on Saturday. Kai Rikardsen, Matt Klein, and Eddy Gibbons form a
good 3-5 nucleus. The Trojans will have one more good race in them. If their split is around 45 seconds, they could flirt
with a top 7 finish.

At the beginning of the season, Coach Dave Jackson hoped just to get in a good sectional. Last fall, Coach Jackson and the
Hornets were in the original sectional of death, Schaumburg, and did not qualify even though they were deserving to go.
What goes around, comes around and Hinsdale South gets a chance to prove itself. Max Rodrigues has been pushed so far
this season by Sophomore twins Donald and Matthew DeSalvo…this trio has a shot of making it into the top 40. The 1-5
split has been 66 and 76 seconds the last two meets, South has the capibility of getting under 60 seconds on Saturday.

At the beginning of the season, Dyestat Illinois had ranked Downers North 10th in our pre-season poll. Many observers
thought that rating was too high. Well, the Trojans get to prove their doubters wrong this Saturday after qualifying 3rd at the
Reavis Sectional. Ben Silver has been one of the elite runners in the state and will be shooting for a top 10 finish Saturday.
Dan Phistry has a shot at all state. Dan has been within 28 seconds of Silver the last 3 races. Downers North has the ability
to place in the top 10 with the same kind of race that this top 7 has run the last 3 weeks.

Edwardsville has been the elite team in downstate Illinois this season and will have a shot to prove how tough they are on
Saturday.  Freshman Garrett Sweatt has been the #1 runner for Coach George Patrylak the last month of the season and is
starting to come into his own. The Tigers have run a strong pack all season led by Seniors Eli Sweatt and Devon Dudding. 1-
5 splits the last 3 weeks have been 59-43-42 seconds…this team has been around 30 earlier in the year. With that kind of
performance, they can be in the Top 7 teamwise.

York goes for its 27th state championship on Saturday with a formula that has been successful for them in the past…good
front runners, great pack. Jordan Herbert  has been a horse for Coach Joe Newton this season and will be up in the front of
the race on Saturday. Senior Steve Sulkin has been up and down, do to a minor illness, but according to Newton, will be on
top of his race on Saturday. After that York has a bevy of great runners that have the capability of being within the first 35
runners. Andrew Smith and Jack Driggs are underclassmen that are running like Seniors, Brain Pollistrini has shaken off
early season injuries and keeps improving week to week. Junior Kush Sangha has been a big surprise this season for Newton
and the duo of Adam Cecil and Patrick Morgan have been running tough as of late. Any of these guys can be in the lineup
on Saturday. York has not run its best race the last couple of weeks but are still running away with meets. Their reputation
is running their best at State…we should see that on Saturday.

Geneva had a minor setback with getting a 2nd place finish at St. Charles East last Saturday, but has the capability of placing
in the top 3 on Saturday. Andrew Nelson is been amongst the race leaders with every meet he is in…the same will be true at
State. Chris Higgins is running like an experienced harrier, not some one in his first cross country season. Greg Adelman,
Kevin Sparks, and Kevin McDowell are a close nit pack and feed off of each other’s energy. The pack for Bob Thomson’s
team has been a s little as 20 seconds…last week it was 44 seconds. If this team approaches 30 seconds, they should return to
Geneva with a team trophy.

Hinsdale Central is one of 4 West Suburban Silver teams to run this weekend at Peoria. Jim Westphal’s team has run with
the formula of no superstars, but a great team. Doug Moore has been the lead man for Westphal all season and will be
counted on again for his leadership. Senior Arash Darbandi will be 10 to 15 seconds off of Moore this weekend, as will
Sophomore Billy Fayette. A good young squad that could surprise people with the way they run on Saturday.

Conant qualified out of the Schaumburg Sectional with their 1st man, Jeffrey Thode, running an amazing race. Thode is
coming off of a lung ailment that people doubted that he would be back this season. Thode responded with a strong 3rd place
finish and stamping him as one of the top runners for the state meet this weekend. The pack off of Tyler Fuchs was their
usual 41 seconds behind him…the same performance could net them a top 10 finish on Saturday…if the split is lower, the
sky is the limit for John Powers’ team.

Lyons Township is getting healthy at the right  time. In winning the Reavis Sectional, Michael Danner’s team proved that it
will be in the running for a trophy with a tight pack. Jack Hostetler has been the #1 man for Danner the last 3 weeks. Sam
Tefler and Michael Janusek has been close behind him. The big plus for LT is the return of Senior Alex Lyons, who is finally
healthy after getting sick right before the Peoria Notre Dame Invite. The pack has been hovering around 25 seconds the last
two meets. If one of the four above mentioned runners can get in the top 25 with the same kind of pack, Lyons will come
back with a trophy…but what kind?

starting line at the state meet. Kyle Brehm has been the #1 man for Coach Nathan Sweet the majority of the season. Henry
Mynatt has been close to Brehm all season…the last few weeks within four  seconds. The split for five the last three weeks
has averaged 44 seconds; Lake Forest will need to be around 40 seconds to claim a top 10 finish.

Lake Zurich has been running hot the last couple of weeks and will look to continue this trend at Peoria. Gerardo Perez has
emerged as one of the top runners in the state and will be in the top 10 Saturday. Junior  Andrew Morrison has been a great
compliment to Perez, last week within 22 seconds of him. Morrison has a great shot of being all-state. The split of 78
seconds might hurt JB Hanson’s squad on Saturday. They will need to keep it at where it was at their conference meet 70
seconds or lower for a high team finish.

Last season, Minooka just missed making it to state. It was a goal this year that drove Kevin Gummerson’s team to achieve it
last Saturday at Normal West. Gummerson has a great duo in Senior Josh Keck and Freshman Kyle Smith leading the way.
The split between runners Sean Coyle, Julian Hoshell, and Joeie Ruettiger needs to stay around 25 seconds between them
and 45 seconds of Keck on Saturday for success.

Jonathan Smith has emerged as the top runner in the western Illinois area and will be one of the top runners on the course
on Saturday. Their was a 24 second split between 2-5 last week. The pack led by Nic Mizeur and Michael Castel will hope to
be within 30 seconds of Smith on Saturday. A team with a definite shot at a top 10 finish.

Prospect took a different approach last week at the Schaumburg Sectional, yet it netted them a second place finish. At
Peoria Invite, Chris Hayek was 41 seconds ahead of the 2nd man Albert Ciolek. At conference 18 seconds. The Knights
packed it up at Sectionals and proved successful keeping 4 seconds between the first 3. The split of 24 seconds was very
mpressive; they will need a repeat of that effort for a high finish. Look for Chris Hayek to be in the Top 10 on Saturday.

Coach Paul Vandersteen was not satisfied with the way his team ran last weekend at St. Charles. But it was not a typical
race for Neuqua Valley. Watch for their best race of the season this weekend. Danny Pawola has a great shot of the
individual title on Saturday. Aaron Beattie seems to be recovered from an IT band problem and should be up with Pawola.
He is a gutty runner and the layoff should not hurt him. The 1-5 split so far this season has been aroound 45 seconds…last
week it blew up at 65 seconds. I don’t see this happening this week. Brian Morenus and Bryan Winek will have great races
this week…that has been the trend. Also watch for a great run from Luke Verbus. Do not count this team out from a trophy
or a 2nd state championship.

Naperville North tweeked its schedule this season running in fewer meets early on in the year. This approach has worked
and the Huskies look primed to challenge for the State championship in AAA. Kyle Gibson will be one of the individual
favorites on Saturday and has been the lead man not only on but also off the course for Coach David Racey. North has the
capability of having up to 4 all state runners  in Tyler Jermmann, David McWilliams, and Bob Guthrie along with Gibson.
Mike Herbert has been solid for Racey as his 5th runner. Nothing special has to happen from this squad on Saturday if they
run their race. If the 1-5 split can be at 44 seconds, the Huskies will head back to Naperville with a state trophy.

Lincoln-Way Central hopes for a high finish took a tremendous hit when lead runner for most of the season Lukas
Verzbicas was diagnosed with a back problem that would not allow him to run for the state series. The Knights responded
with a great effort last Saturday at Normal West and could be in the hunt for a top 7 finish on Saturday. This is a deep squad
for Coach John Taylor. He has a number of runners that can step in at crunch time. Last week, Ethan Simmons ran his best
race so far this season. Sophomore Kyle Counter is another runner who can stay close to Simmons. The Knights will need a
tight pack on Saturday from their 3-5 men for a great team finish.

cast and will hope to stay within 6 seconds of each other and 20 seconds of Grady on Saturday. If the 5th man, either Dan

wins at Sectionals and Peoria Notre Dame. The status of top 5 runner Kyle McNicholas is unknown at the time of this
writing. Having him in there would be a huge plus for Coach John O’Malley. Elliot Hevel and Kyle Meyer have been strong
runners to compliment Dahleen…they will need to be within 30 seconds of him for success on Saturday. Sophomore Mike
Tortorelli has stepped in with gritty performances the last couple races…watch for a good one from him on Saturday. If

Loyola has the nucleus of 3 great runners that could get all state on Saturday. Nico Composto looked solid in getting 2nd at
Sectionals and will be in contention for the individual crown on Saturday. Mark Donohue and Jack Seeburg also have the
capability of being in the top 25. With 3 runners up front, Coach Jack Seeburg has a little luxury of a wider pack. But, he
will need Mac Ford and Kevin Kapolnek to be within 80 seconds of the front trio for great things to happen.
Team Race
The team race may the best battle we have seen in the last 30 years. In my eyes, there are 4 teams that could leave
Detweiller with the State Championship trophy. Naperville North has a solid first 4 that could be in the top 25. The key for
them will be keeping their split ffrom 1 to 2 at 15 seconds and the 1-5 split has to be at 44 seconds or better. York has not
received the respect that some people believe this team deserves and they could show how strong they are on Saturday.
Herbert and Sulkin will be in the front, but the pack has to be around 40 seconds for victory. Neuqua Valley should have a
resurgence this week with the return of Aaron Beattie. Verbus, Winek, and Morenus will need to have solid races to support
Pawola and Beattie. Geneva  has a shot at a trophy. Nelson will be towards the front capable of low scores. The pack needs
to be within 30 seconds of Nelson for a Viking victory. Lyons Township could be the darkhorse amongst the “Big 4”. With
the return of Alex Lyons and a tight pack, the Lions have the capability of pulling a shocker. Palatine is steady and will have
a say in the final outcome. Bernardo and Bollman will give the Pirates a shot at a state trophy. Close score for the top 3
teams…we may a difference of 15 between the first 4 teams.
Individual Race
The individual race is up for grabs. Start with Kyle Gibson…undefeated this season, has run 14:39 on a 3 mile course. Jordan
Herbert and Steve Sulkin will be in the mix. Both have run some sizzling times this fall. Herbert looked tough last week at
Niles West covering the 3.0 mile flat course in 14:24! Steve Sulkin appears to be recovered from his illness. He will be tough.
In 5 races that they have run against each other, Sulkin is 5-0 against Kyle Gibson in state competitions. Danny Pawola has
been beaten twice by Gibson in consecutive weeks, but has the ability to run away with the race. Andrew Nelson of Geneva
has a great kick and could be a factor if he is with the leaders at the end. Andrew Larson of Marmion Academy has not
received much coverage because of the Marmion schedule. He has been running tough the last couple of weeks. He could be
a surprise in the outcome. Zach Dahleen has been running strong of late and could force the pace like he did last fall.
Gerardo Perez of Lake Zurich is another runner that has been running strong of late and will be a factor. This is a race that
anything can happen…expect the unexpected. Also watch for Freshman Garrett Sweatt of Edwardsville, Pat Lesiewicz of
Schaumburg, Nico Composto of Loyola Academy, Ben Silver of Downers Grove North, Justin Smith of Moline, Phil
Fairleigh of Cary-Grove, Anthony Manfrin of Dundee Crown, and Chano Bernardo of Palatine to be in the mix. Depending
on the weather, watch for times from 14:20-14:25 to win this race.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES THIS WEEKEND !!!
