IHSA Class AAA Boys Team Preview Part 1

Michael Newman

It was a year of change.  Cross Country in the state of Illinois went from 2 to 3 classes.  Naperville
Neuqua Valley dethroned  5 time defending champ Elmhurst York to win the AAA Team Championship
and then in December, won the Nike Team Championships in Portland, OR. Chris Derrick of Neuqua
Valley planted his name in the history books by winning the individual race by 20 seconds and coming
within 2 seconds of Craig Virgin’s course record. It also set off a flury of debates on whether Derrick was
the fastest of all time because of the reconfiguration of the Detweiller Park course (see the Detweiller
Report for results).
The change of classifications was not without incident. Only 4 sectionals were slotted for the new AAA
with 15 of the top 20 schools in the Schaumburg Sectional of Death. That mistake was corrected this
season by adding a 5th sectional to the mix. Still, I am sure some schools will still not be happy when they
find out what sectional they will be assigned at the beginning of September.
The individual race will prove to be interesting at State. Only 5 All-State runners return to compete this
fall, leaving the race wide open. Steve Sulkin (Senior, Elmhurst York) is top returning runner and is ready
for the challenge of Kyle Gibson (Senior, Naperville North), Danny Pawola (Senior, Naperville Neuqua
Valley), Aaron Beattie (Junior, Naperville Neuqua Valley), and Jeffrey Thode (Senior, Hoffman Estates
Conant).
The team race will be close as well. Both Elmhurst York and Naperville North appear loaded this season.
York is led by two-time Cross Country All Stater Steve Sulkin and 12 runners jockeying for 6 positions.
Naperville North returns 5 runners from last season’s 5th place team led by fellow 2 time Cross Country
All Stater Kyle Gibson. Defending Champion Naperville Neuqua Valley has a powerful 1-2 in Danny
Pawola and Aaron Beattie, but has several questions to answer about their remaining line up. LaGrange
Lyons Township and Geneva both did not make it out of a loaded Schaumburg Sectional last fall and look
for redemption.
Our rankings are for the pre-season…not on how they will finish at the end of the season. There are
many races to run, stories to write in the next few months. At this time, Elmhurst York appears to have
the slightest edge over Naperville North and have been chosen #1 in our first Dyestat Illinois AAA rating
of the year.
Elmhurst York
Coach: Joe Newton
2007 Finish:2nd AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:1
Returnees:Steve Sulkin SR (5, 14:26), Jordan Herbert SR (30, 15:01), Adam Cecil JR (63, 15:03),

Last year, Neuqua Valley ended the York Dukes’ string of 5 state championships in a row. Well, at the
school on St. Charles Road, they feeling of the runners is that they would like to get that 1st place trophy
back. The Dukes and Coach Joe Newton return 3 from last year’s runner up squad. Some thing was
missing last season. “Last year, there was no leadership, no togetherness,” said the legendary York
mentor. “So far this year, there is a nice focus on the squad. Everyone likes each other.”
Steve Sulkin is the rock for this squad. He has the ability to run under 14:00 this season according to
Newton. The heart of the team is Senior Jordan Herbert. From what I have seen, there is more
cohesiveness on this team, mainly from Herbert’s attitude. Junior Adam Cecil is now fully recovered
from injuries that plagued him his entire sophomore season and could have a breakout fall. After those
three, Newton has a ton of runners to choose from. Senior Brian Pollistrini has been fighting shin splits
the last couple weeks but looks ready to return. Sophomore Jack Driggs has been running with the front
three most of the summer and has the ability to be in the first five. Junior Matt Schacht, Sophomores
Ron and Tom Hedman, Junior Andrew Smith, and Senior s Patrick Morgan and Will McCracken will all be
fighting for positions in the starting lineup. The surprise for the Dukes this fall, according to Newton, will
be Senior David Way, who ran 1:56 this past spring on York’s 3200 relay. He is just coming into his own,
but will need to stay away from the injury bug.
“We will be a young squad this year”, closed Newton. “But I have a good feeling about this bunch.”  They
will be young and may suffer a few growing pains early on, but York will be tough come the State Series
time. Their first test will come in Mid-September in a dual meet against #4 Lyons Township at East End
Park.
Naperville North
Coach: David Racey
2007 Finish:5th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:2
Returnees:Kyle Gibson SR (24, 14:58), Tyler Jermann JR (31, 15:03),
David McWilliams SR (48, 15:15), Bob Guthrie JR (77, 15:36), Mike Herbert SR (88, 15:44)
Chris Woodard JR, Paul Ceruti SR, Steve Cozzi SR, Ryan Soldat SR, Adam Newman JR,
Cody Schlaht SO, Alexander Flemming SO, Nick Liesen SO, Joe Mazzone SR.
Newcomers:   Charlie McKeown SO (participated in Football last fall.)
Naperville North was ready to run at Detweiller Park immediately after their Schaumburg Sectional win
over York. The problem was they had to wait a week and anything that they did not want to happen did.
“If it were not the state meet there is no way that Gibson and Herbert would have run” ,said Huskie
Coach David Racey.” Kyle had bronchitis and was throwing up on the starting line. Mike was so sick he
could not practice all week.” All the pieces of the puzzle are back for Racey and the runners from
Naperville North look to redeem last year’s state meet performance.
Everything starts with the Huskies’ lead man, Senior Kyle Gibson. He’s had a great summer training
according to Racey and will be with the front runners at state. Junior Tyler Jermann did not have the best
of track seasons, but has been running with Gibson all summer.”He looks like he has been running at a
higher level than he ever has before,” said Racey. David McWilliams is a 3-sport athlete and does not run
track in the spring. But expect big things from him this fall. The key could be Junior Bob Guthrie, who has
improved dramatically over last season. Guthrie ran a solo 9:40 last spring and is on the verge of
greatness. Mike Herbert is a major cog for this machine.”Mike was sick all last year. They (the doctors)
are now finding out what exactly was causing his illness,” stated Racey….”he has had a great summer.
The one surprise could be Sophomore Charlie McKeown, who ran 2:00 for 800 meters last spring and is
out for Cross Country for the first time. He could crack in their top 5.
“Last year’s state meet was tough for us,” said Racey. “…the team got out too slow and did not recover.”
The key for Naperville North is staying healthy this year. They have a strong first 6, but we will have to
see if anyone can step up to plug the holeif someone goes down.  If the Huskies stay healthy, this squad
has the tools to keep the state championship trophy in Naperville, only on the north side of town.
Naperville Neuqua Valley
Coach: Paul Vandersteen
2007 Finish:1st AAA State Meet, Nike Team Nationals National Champion
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:3
Returnees:Danny Pawola SR (8th, 14:34), Aaron Beattie JR (13th, 14:45), Bryan Winek SR (95, 15:47),
Brian Morenus SR, Connor Shields SR, Luke Verbus JR, Robert James SR,
Carlton Folster JR, David Wing JR, Jordan Lagomarcino JR, Brian Griffith SR,
Alistar Duncan SR, Rob Sassa JR, William Klimczak JR, James Krist JR, Andrew Tout SO,
Hirsch Garwod SO, Harsha Torke SO, Patrick Peters SR.
So after last season and winning a state and national championship, what kind of expectations does
Coach Paul Vandersteen have for his team. His reply: “I say this at nauseum, but our only expectation is
to have fun, work hard, and hopefully the improvement occurs.  We don't talk about State place finishes
or anything like that.  Obviously, we would like to do well place-wise at State, but we have no control
over other teams so why bother talking about it?” Neuqua Valley returns 3 runners from last year’s
championship team. There are questions that need to be answered for this squad.
The Wildcats have a powerful 1-2 punch led by All Staters Senior Danny Pawola and Junior Aaron Beattie.
Both of these young men have looked strong so far this summer. The key for Neuqua will be Senior Bryan
Winek. Bryan ran 9:33 this past track season, but has been inconsistent with some of his performances.
“If he can focus on his own mechanics and race plan, he is going to be a strong addition to our top
seven,” said Vandersteen. After these 3, that is when the questions begin. When I spoke to Coach
Vandersteen in July,he stated: “Last year at this time, we were wondering who was going to be our 8-12
man. This year, we are wondering who will be 3-7.” There are plenty of components to fill these spots.
Watch for Senior Brian Morenus to be in the hunt for one of the spots. He had experience last year
running in the top 7…I expect him to be in there. Also watch for Seniors Robert James, Brian Griffith,
Connor Shields, and Alistar Duncan to be in positionfor the top 7.
This is the deepest team Vandersteen has ever had. It will take a little time to see who steps up. But
watch this team come state series time. They will miss the leadership of graduated runners Chris Derrick,
Jim Riddle, and Kevin Grady, but the runners of this year’s team have learned from the legacy that these
3 left…and that is the most important thing.
LaGrange Lyons Township
Coach: Michael Danner
2007 Finish:11th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:4
Returnees:Robbie Keeler JR, Mike Janusek SR, Alex Lyons SR, Jack Hostetler SR, Mike Moore JR,
Robert Deptula JR, Robbie Kucera JR, Sam Telfer SO, Andrew Allabastro JR,
Sam Height SR, Andy Boyd SR, Stewart Newstat JR, Zach Klingberg SR,
Victor Sokolovski JR.
Coach Michael Danner was short and to the point about last season: “We have gained some valuable
experience and learned a lot…” The Lions were in the buzz saw last season called the Schaumburg
Sectional and did not make it out alive. But, they may be a good thing for this season as this group is
hungry for success. Lyons Township returns 4 strong runners from last season’s squad that has hunger
written all over them.
It is hard to say who the top runner will be this fall. Senior Michael Janusek was the most consistent last
fall until sectionals. He can running a nice 9:33 for 3200 last spring. Senior Alex Lyons ran 4:22 for 1600
last spring and had a great training summer. Robbie Keeler was injured during outdoor season with a
metatarsal stress fracture, but responded nicely to training this summer. Senior Jack Hostetler will be
asked to step up…his consistency will be looked upon as a key for this team. After these 4, there are a
number of runners who will make the top 7. Watch for Sophomore Sam Tefler, Junior Mike Moore, and
Sophomore Mark Holt all to make a push.
The Lions will have a strong front 4 this fall, but the key will be the gap between 4 and 5. If they can keep
the gap short, the Lions will have a shot at a trophy. Coach Danner summed it up best: “Expectations are
high.”
Geneva
Coach: Bob Thomson
2007 Finish:6th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:5
Returnees:Andrew Nelson SR, Greg Adelman SR, Kevin Sparks JR, Kevin McDowell SO,
Drew Hickey SR, Jake Tauscher SR, Connor Bartel SO, Eric Blake JR, John Yelle JR,
Justin Rodriguez JR, Zak Kammerer SR, Mike Erickson SR, Mike Mead JR
Zack Krugler JR, Ryan Ahern JR.
Newcomers:  Chris Higgins SR (played soccer last fall)
Geneva was one of the squads that fell victim to the Meat Grinder called the Schaumburg Sectional.
Ranked in the Top 10 most of last year, none of the Viking runners got the opportunity to run at state. “It
was very disappointing to come so close and not run at state having to go through the cut throat
Schaumburg sectional,” said Geneva Coach Bob Thomson. It was a season that ended earlier than
planned…don’t expect the same thing to happen this fall. 5 out of the Top 7 return from last year’s team
that believe they will be running November 8 at Detweiller Park.
Senior Andrew Nelson had a breakout spring ending up running a 4:14 mile in June. After resting,
Nelson’s training has gone well according to his coach. He should be a major player in the individual race
at Peoria. Senior Greg Adelman will be a key for Thomson. Playing on the Tennis team in the spring,
Adelman has rounded into shape and should be pushing Nelson. Junior Kevin Sparks, Sophomore Kevin
McDowell, and Senior Drew Hickey all should be part of the top 5 this fall. A surprise on this team will be
Senior Chris Higgins. Coach Thomason has stated that Higgins, who ran 1:57 in their 3200 relay, will be a
big impact on the team.
I don’t think we can say determined enough times for some of the squads that were at the Schaumburg
Sectional last fall. Geneva falls into that bracket. “I know the boys believe in themselves and I do too,”
said Thomson. “They should, they’ve worked very hard to get where they are and deserve all that comes
with working this hard.” Geneva will get their first challenge against Waubonsie Valley at St. Charles on
September 6. This team thrives by having a tight pack. If they can keep within 40 seconds of Nelson, who
should be towards the front, the Vikings will be tough, tough, tough.
Carpentersville-Dundee Crown
Coach: Tom Smith
2007 Finish: 10th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:6
Returnees:Anthony Manfrin SO (51, 15:16), Paul Smith SR (87, 15:44), Jon Keable SO (111, 15:59),
Nathan Prom JR (122, 16:05), Mike Weichmann JR (131, 16:09),
Jon Magnant JR (144, 16:16). Dan Magnant SR, Jon Clark JR, Kris Hanselmann SO,
Chris Sailor JR, Matt Atilano SR, Ryan Smith SO
The surprise team of last year’s state meet was the Crown Chargers. Coach Tom Smith moved 4 runners
from his Frosh / Soph squad to the varsity and the results spoke for themselves. This season, this squad
will not sneak up on anyone. “The guys just want to compete each weekend,” said Coach Tom Smith.
“…they know they will have a battle in the FVC with Cary-Grove.” This team is still a young squad, but the
expectations are high.
Super-soph Anthony Manfrin will be the main man for Smith. His 4:18 as a freshman along with winning
the Freshman mile at the Nike Outdoor Championships show that potential that this guy has. Senior Paul
Smith has had a great summer of training according to Smith, running stride for stride with Manfrin.
After these two, it could be up for grabs. “The rest of the guys at this point seem to be interchangeable,”
said Smith. Senior Dan Magnant, Juniors Mike Weichmann, Nathan Prom, and Jon Magnat, and
Sophomores Jon Keable and Kris Hanselmann could all be in the hunt. The key for Smith and the Chargers
will be how tight their 2-5 pack split will be and close can that pack be near Manfrin.
“We still are very young---- one, maybe two seniors in the top 7-12... so it's yet to be seen how much we
have grown and matured as a team and racers and how well we handle the increased expectations,” said
Smith.” If we continue to build on last year and have the same composure and excitement this November
as we did last year where I thought we handled ourselves great--then we will be a very solid team.”
Aurora Waubonsie Valley
Coach: Kevin Rafferty
2007 Finish:4th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:7
Returnees:Emmett Lorenz SR (37, 15:04), Ryan Shea SR (53, 15:17), Michael Lorenz SR (82, 15:41),
David Groeber SO, Shemil Dodhia JR, Matt Havlik SR, Pooj Padmaroj SR, Jack Foley JR,
Josh Roberts JR, Craig Huhtala JR, Jonathan Solis JR, Corey Sarco JR.
Kevin Rafferty steps into the role as Head Coach of Waubonsie Valley. “Severance, in my mind, has been
one of the best 5 coaches in the state over the last 7 years,” said Rafferty.” I have huge shoes to fill…”
Waubonsie Valley always seems to peak at the right time and I would expect nothing different this year.
The summer has been kind of bumpy for Rafferty and the rest of his squad. Senior Emmett Lorenz had
strep throat and Michael Lorenz has mono. I would expect the beginning of the year to start out slow.
Emmett Lorenz and Senior Ryan Shea will be running in their 3rd Varsity campaign. It’s good to rely on
experience like that. The runners that Rafferty needs to step up this fall had a monster summer training.
Senior Matt Havlik has responded better to the workouts this year according to Rafferty and Sophomore
David Groeber has pushed Shea to the limit in workouts. Also watch for Junior Shemil Dodhia to be in this
front pack. The real surprise could be incoming Freshman Tyler Neenan, whom Rafferty describes as the
“real deal”. He has a shot at the top 7.
This is a team, due to the health issues will start out slow. But come the time of conference, I would bet
that this team will be pushing Neuqua and St Charles North for a conference title. Two years ago they
were 5th…last year Waubonsie was 4th….this is a squad that could come back with a trophy.
Orland Park Sandburg
Coach: John O’Malley
2007 Finish:12th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:8
Returnees:Zach Dahleen SR (68, 15:30), Kyle Meyer SR (101, 15:49), Elliot Hevel SR (116, 16:00),
Kyle McNicholas SR (125, 16:07), Dennis O’Flaherty SR (157, 16:43), Mike Tortorelli SO,
Sean Keane JR, Adam Pronitis SR, Jeff Perino SR, Justin McKamma SO, Ryan Sawyers JR,
Chris Koutavas JR, Nick deWolf JR.
Two years ago, Coach John O’Malley guided a talented squad to 4th place finish. Last year was expected
to be a rebuilding season, but O’Malley guided a Sectional Championship and a 12th place finish at the
State Meet. Their summer has been strong…building for the one goal; Detweiller Park in November. “We
have a controlled aggression right now,” said O’Malley. “Everything we are doing is part of the process
to be ready in November.”
Senior Zach Dahleen returns as the #1 runner on this squad. Dahleen did not have the best of state meet
races (he was 4:41 at the mile but faded), but ran 14:40 earlier in the year. He has been overlooked and
could be one of the top runners in the state. After Dahleen, the key for this team is to have their 2-4 men
within 30 seconds of him. Seniors Kyle Meyer, Elliot Hevel, and Kyle McNicholas all ran within 20 seconds
of each other last season. They will need to duplicate that again this year. The fifth man will come from
either Senior Dennis O’Flaherty, Junior Chris Koutavas, and Sophomore Mike Tortorelli. Freshman Kevin
O’Flaherty has the potential, according to O’Malley, to crack the top 7 by the end of the year.
Sandburg has a great shot to get back to state, but more importantly,a shot to grab a trophy. “I am
really excited about our prospects and I am as excited about this year as any I’ve been coaching,” said
O’Malley. If they can stay healthy, they have some quality runners to push into at least the Top 5 or
maybe even better.
Mt. Prospect – Prospect
Coach: Mike Stokes
2007 Finish:6th AAA Palatine Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:9
Returnees:Chris Hayek SR (32, 15:03), Kelan Strobel SO, Chris Spudic JR, Albert Ciolek JR,
Matt Ashton SO, Michael Sampson JR, Samuel Pederson JR, Vincent Tangore JR,
Andrew Luckman JR, Patrick Ford JR.
Prospect had a roller coaster season last year. One week was great, the next week not so good. At the
Palatine Sectional, the Knights did not have a great race and missed qualifying for the state meet. Youth
can do that to you. This season will be a little different as Mike Stokes’ squad will be one of the favorites
in the Mid Suburban League and could be a player in state wide competition.
Senior Chris Hayek is the main man for the Knights. Hayek ran as an individual last fall and finished in the
top 35. His quality spring in track shows that he is ready to challenge the top runners in the state. The
rest of the squad will be comprised of underclassmen, but those runners have experience. Juniors Chris
Spudnic and Albert Ciolek along with Sophomores Kellan Strobel and Matt Ashton all had a strong track
season and will look to build from that. This team will be one of top teams in the state next season, but
they will surprise many this fall come state meet time.
Downers Grove North
Coach: Will Kupisch
2007 Finish: 8th AAA Aurora East Regional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:10
Returnees:Ben Silver SO, Joesph Malek SR, Dan Phistry SR, Daniel Smith SR, Andrew Montague JR,
Zachary Dawes JR, Sean McBride SR, Andrew Stawarz JR, Mitchell Penninger JR,
William Henry SR, David Dreiser JR, Joshua Williams JR, Brett Witek SR, Adam Wilson SR,
Austen Mack-Crane SR, Adam Gellman SR.
Yes…this is not a misprint, but I have the Trojans rated #10 in our pre-season rating. But I think this team
has some talent that will be discovered come September. Coach Will Kupisch’s team had a disastrous
Regional race last fall, placing 8th in the stacked Aurora East Regional. Every runner ran their worst race
of the year. North lost 5 runners due to graduation, but this team does have some talent lurking
Ben Silver was the big surprise of early last season. The sophomore got up in the emotion of a state
series race and did not run a great race at Regionals. In fact, he was carried out of the finish area on a
stretcher. He does have the talent to compete with the best, having run 9:30 this past track season and
running within 15 seconds of York stud Steve Sulkin at conference. Seniors Joseph Malek and Dan Phistry
will be asked to fill the 2-3 runner spots,  but watch for Juniors Andrew Montague and Zachary Dawes
ready to step in. The big problem for the Trojans will be keeping the gap between Silver and the rest of
the pack under 50 seconds. The 2-7 runners that are projected have run within 15 seconds of each other
during last season. If this happens, North will be surprising people in November.
Palatine
Coach: Chris Quick
2007 Finish:3rd AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:11
Returnees:Chano Bernando JR (36, 15:03), Alec Bollman JR (75, 15:36), Juan Perez JR,
Jeff Larson JR, Colin Morlock SR, Luke Kierys SR, Adam Bethke SR, Matt Baran SR,
Tom Laskowske SR, Eric Blyth SR, Vlad Novikov SR, Steve Repking JR,
Lucas Rohrbarn SO, Eric Bethke SO, AJ Laskowske SO, Reuben Frey SO.
It seems every year, we talk about how the Palatine Pirates will be rebuilding after losing so many
runners to graduation. It’s a misconception. Palatine does not rebuild but they re-load. “A lot of people
made a big deal about Neuqua going 1-7 in the Woodruff open race,” said Coach Chris Quick,” but we
placed 6 in the top 9 in the Peoria Notre Dame, ranging from 16:07 to 16:24.  All six of those guys are
much improved.” They’ve had a great summer training according to Quick having 30 to 35 runners
together 6-7 days a week. Only two runners return with state meet experience, but the Pirates will be up
to the task of challenging the best come October.
Junior Chano Bernardo will be looked upon to lead this squad. Running 9:33 in his first year of track,
Bernardo expects to be with the state’s best every time he goes out. Junior Alec Bollman had a good
track season as well and will be on the heels of Bernardo. After that, anything can happen. Junior Juan
Perez was one of the top JV runners on his squad last fall and will be looked to step up. Two runners
return this fall that were out last season. Junior Jeff Larson was thought to be one of the top 5 runners
last fall according to Quick, but missed the entire season with a stress fracture. Senior Tom Lasowske
also spent the season out recovering from a pelvic stress fracture and will be surprises to many people.
Also watch for Seniors Colin Morlick, Luke Kierys, and Adam Bethke all vying for top 7 positions.
The quality of a program is demonstrated by the consistency of the results. Palatine is always up towards
the front despite losing runners. This year will be no exception. “We expect to be in the top five every
year now and to defend our MSL title,” says Quick. This is a team that will surprise some people, but will
be no surprise to me.
St. Charles North
Coach: Steve Imig
2007 Finish:6th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:12
Returnees:Todd Vankerkhoff SR (76, 15:36), Brad Wheeler JR (113, 16:00),
Steve Miller SR (138, 16:13), Max Clink SR, Pete Johnson JR, Will Novorolsky JR,
Kyle Zankowski JR, Kevin Moore SO, Tom McDonnell SR, T.J. Van Heel SR,
Aaron Sanchez JR, Ryan Senci SO, Kyle Kuczynski JR, Matt Miller SR.
The North Stars will field a different type of team this fall. Last year, the team was based on three front
runners, graduated seniors Chris DeSilva, Mike Strasser, and Scott Speare. This year will be a little
different for Coach Steve Imig. He will have to rely on a tight pack.
The one runner that can be their front runner is Senior Max Clink, who did not run last fall because of
injury. He is healthy, as evidenced by a strong track campaign ending in a state championship in the
3200 Meter Relay. Senior Todd Vankerhoff had a breakout fall campaign and will be counted on for “low
numbers”. Senior Steve Miller ran great in track and will be looked upon to step up. Senior Matt Miller is
healthy and could be a runner the surprise on the North Star horizon. A strong junior class, led by Brad
Wheeler, Pete Johnson, Will Novorolsky, and Kyle Zankowski will be relied on to form the nucleus of this
team. This team has the talent to contend for the Upstate Eight Conference title and a good shot for a
Top 5 finish at state.
Hoffman Estates Conant
Coach: John Powers
2007 Finish:8th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:13
Returnees:Jeffrey Thode SR (15, 14:48), Tyler Fuchs SR, Ben Anderson SR, Juan Ramirez SR,
David Trinco SR, Ryan Moeller SR, Sean Shaudhari JR, Muhammad Tayyab JR,
Mike Passaro SO, Troy Cunningham SO.
Optimism is high in Cougar camp this fall as Coach John Powers welcomes back 5 from a squad that
placed 8th in a very strong Schaumburg Sectional. “We had an excellent Summer,” said Powers.”  Jeffrey
looks as strong as ever as does Tyler Fuchs.”
All eyes will be on Jeffrey Thode this fall. Even after placing 15th  in the fall, he broke out in a big way by
running 4:10 for 1600 meters in the spring. With his speed, he is definitely a contender for the individual
crown. The key this fall for Conant will be Tyler Fuchs, who has achieved a vast improvement over last
year. “People will be surprised by how good Tyler is,” said Powers.” He gets overshadowed quite often by
Jeffrey, but Tyler would be an outstanding #1 runner on several programs.” Another surprise for Conant
will be Senior Pablo Ramirez, who was hobbled with ankle problems last season. He is healthy and
figures into the Top 5 plans. Also watch for Seniors Ben Anderson, David Trinco, and Ryan Moeller to also
be in the chase.
Conant will be in the hunt for the Mid Suburban League Championship and could be in the hunt for a
trophy. The 3 -5 men will have to keep a gap of about 40 seconds from Thode for success. John Powers
summed it up:  Our tough MSL schedule should prepare us for almost anything.  It’s been a while since
the Cougars battled for a State Trophy, but we hope we don't have to wait much longer!”
New Lenox Lincoln-Way Central
Coach: John Taylor
2007 Finish:20th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:14
Returnees:Ethan Simmons SR (81, 15:41), Steve Ahlgrim SR (135,16:10),
Patrick Chojnacki SR (139, 16:13), Joe Gasca SR (141, 16:14),
Kyle Counter SO (146, 16:18), Tom Willmot SR (161, 16:52),
Kyle Scharwarth SO (166, 17:17), Cory Scharwarth SO, Ed Gasca SO, Sam Robinson JR,
Wayne Brock JR, Zach Klaaren JR, Jake Brown SO, Kyle Overby JR.
NewcomerLukas Verzbicas FR.
After qualifying for the state meet last season, the future looked bright for this season. Coach John
Taylor had all of his runners with state experience returning. “All seven from last year's State team are
returning and our summer running camps went very well,” said Taylor.”  Most of our athletes were able
to run with the team over the summer and the guys put in miles.”
The season looks even brighter with the addition of the wonder freshman Lukas Verzbicas. He looks to
contribute immediately. Verzbicas won the IESA Cross Country title last fall and in the spring, the 800 and
the 1600 in track. To trump that, he went to the National Championships and ran the equivalent of 9:24
for 3200 meters. His times at this stage are compared to Kevin Havel. Only time will tell. The rest of the
team is strong. Seniors Ethan Simmons and Steve Ahlgrim traded off the #1 spot last season and both
will be counted on their leadership again this fall. Their pack was tight last year from 2-5 and will be
needed again this campaign. Also watch for another Freshman, Nate Stefka, to contribute.
Depending on where IHSA places the Knights, I expect to see this squad down at Detweiller in November.
They have considerable depth and quality in the front with Verzbicas. “Our team goals are to return to
definite possibility the State Meet and as everything looks now, race to a Top Ten finish,” said Coach
Taylor. That is a with this group…maybe even higher.
Lake Forest
Coach: Nathan Sweet
2007 Finish:7th AAA Palatine Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:15
Returnees:Henry Mynatt JR, Jonathan Briskman JR, Colin Briskman JR, Joseph Dilenscheider SR,
Kyle Brehm SR, Charles Dewar SR, Zach Silber JR, Andrew Steinwold JR,
Andrew Farver JR, Ryan Crilly JR, Stewart Kerr SR, Scott Burgis SR, Harrison DeMars SR,
Brian Barker JR, Ryan Barth SR.
With a load of talent returning, Nathan Sweet is very optimistic about the season. “Summer training
went well, the best group of runners I have had for summer training, this begins my 15th year,” said
Sweet. “ They have gotten some good solid mileage base, and come August 13 will be ready to begin the
interval work to fine tune the base work into some fast times.” The Scouts had a successful season last
fall winning the North Suburban Conference and just missing out going down state as a team.
This is a young squad, but the experience is there. Juniors Jonathan Briskman, Henry Myatt, and Collin
Briskman look to be the core of this squad and will trade off the top spot most likely. Seniors Joe
Dilenscheider, Kyle Brehm, and Charles Dewar have all had great summers according to Sweet and will
again contribute. Watch also for Junior Andrew Steinwold to have a breakout season…he just realizing
how good he can be.
The goals for Lake Forest vary drastically between the team and their coach. “ I am going to keep things
realistic,” said the coach. “ Our team goals are to defend our undefeated North Suburban Conference
Championship, win the regionals and return to the sectional meet.  I know the team has made the goal of
a trip to Peoria in November, but there is a lot of training that must happen between now and then, and
depending on how the IHSA decided to align things could play a role in the difficulty of that trip, but it is
not out of the picture.” This team definitely has a shot of making it down state. They will have to move
their pack up, which is capable of having a 30 second split. The true for these runners will be at the
Palatine Invitational at the end of September.
Oak Park Fenwick
Coach: John Polka
2007 Finish:17th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:16
Returnees:Jack Boyle SR (72, 15:33), Martin Grady JR (89, 15:44), Matt Miller SR (126, 16:07),
Brian Barron SR (140, 16:14), Tom Laser SR (145, 16:17), Bill Toohey JR,
Matt Kipskind JR, Matt Shannon JR, Steve Blazer SO, Brett Sassetti JR,
Mateo Alvaredo SO.
The Friars return 5 runners from last year’s state team for what reportedly looks to be Veteran Coach
John Polka’s final campaign. Last season, Fenwick traded off runners at the number #1 spot all season,
but the end, Senior Jack Boyle stepped up as the leader on this team. Boyle had a good track season and
will be counted on even more so this season. After that, the Friars should have a tight pack led by Juniors
Martin Grady and Bill Toohey and Seniors Matt Miller, Brian Barron, and Tom Laser all with the
capability of running within 15 seconds of each other.
Fenwick is the favorite to in the Chicago Catholic League this fall. They have the depth and the
experience to go even farther than that in the next couple of months.
Rockton Hononegah
Coach: Mark McLarty
2007 Finish:11th AAA Palatine Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:17
Returnees:Matt Brinkmeier SR, Kevin Jacobs JR, Blake Miglin JR, Andy Schuck SR, Jacob Schoff JR,
Jordan Breese JR, Ryan Ballard JR, Jordan Wesselin SR, Chase Prieve SR, Nick Schuck SO,
Andrew Johnson SO.
Coach Mark McLarty had a young squad last season that learned many lessons. One of the lessons
occurred when they were moved into the Palatine Sectional. Well, 5 of the 7 runners who ran in that race
are back and in great shape. “The summer has gone well,” said McLarty. “ Most of the runners have been
dedicated.  4 of the boys went to the Wisconsin camp.”
Matt Brinkmeier and Kevin Jacobs will be the key men this fall. Both of these runners had great track
seasons and hope to parlay this to this coming season. Junior Ryan Ballard, who has been in golf the last
2 falls, will also contribute. Ballard had a great track season, running 1:59 in the 800. One runner that
McLarty told us to watch for is Freshman Dragan Simic, if he decides to come out for cross country
instead of soccer. Simic ran 4:40 in 8th grade and would definitely be a contributor in the Top 5.
Hononegah could have a rough ride if they are put in a Northwest Suburban Sectional. More than likely,
they will be merged in the downstate sectional at Normal…which would be great news for McLarty and
his team. “Our 1st goal is to win the NIC 10 Conference meet for the 3rd straight year (that includes
Belvidere North), and the ultimate goal is to make it back to State.”
Cary-Grove
Coach: Layne Holter
2007 Finish:14th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA PreSeason Rating:18
Returnees:Phillip Fairleigh JR (78, 15:37), Kai Rikardsen SR (85, 15:43),
Adam Ressique SR (117, 16:00), Ryan Gustafson JR, Brian Bajorek SR, Jason Maxwell JR,
Matt Klein JR, Eddy Gibbons JR, Danny Hernandez SO, Matt Chimel JR, Bill Roth SR.
Coach Layne Holter welcomes back 3 runners from a squad that qualified for state last year. Optimism is
high at the Trojan camp. “We have had a productive summer of running and everyone seems to have
stayed healthy,” said Holter. “ Our top 7 have been very consistent and have trained together as well as
had several "focus meetings" to prepare for the upcoming season.  They are hungry and want to defend
their last two FVC Championships.”
The main man for Holter will be Junior Phillip Fairleigh, who ran 9:27 last track season. The one thing
that he will have to work on is consistency, having run a great sectional race, but a not so good state run.
Senior Kai Rikardsen was surprise last year for Holter and will step up and could run with Fairleigh. One
runner that will surprise people will be Senior Bill Roth according to Coach Holter. “He had a solid track
season and has run well this summer.  I expect him to be in our top 3.” Watch for Junior Jason Maxwell,
who has been strong so far this summer as well as Senior Adam Ressique.
The goals have been simple for Cary-Grove this fall. To achieve them, they will need to have more
consistency from Phil Fairleigh and challenge the front runners in the state along with keeping their split
around 45 seconds. “We expect to contend for another FVC title.  Dundee-Crown will be tough this year
but our guys are not giving anything away without a fight, “said Holter.” With the new 3-class system
this year there are a lot of unknowns but we plan to contend for another Regional title and State Meet
berth.”
Wheaton-Warrenville South
Coach: Greta Havey
2007 Finish:6th AAA Aurora East Regional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:19
Returnees:Aaron Peck JR, Nick Casa JR, Matthew Mitchell SR, Matthew Mazzoni JR,
Michael Murphy SR, Tyler Cipriano SR, Colin Zimmermann JR, Robert Valentin JR,
Hayden Spall SO, Matthew McAndrews JR, Christian Adams SO, Aaron Foster JR,
Mark Vigil SR.
This was a squad that was a victim of being in the rough Aurora East Regional. They learned some
lessons from that, and Coach Greta Havey returns 4 from last season’s squad. There is a group of 4
runners that should make their case for a top spot. Senior Matthew Mitchell had a breakout season in
track running 4:24 for 1600 and should be tough as nails this fall. Juniors Aaron Peck, Matthew Mazzoni,
and Nick Casa should be right on Mitchell’s butt. The key for this squad this season is finding someone to
challenge the top runners, which I think might be Mitchell. Their strength is their pack. The Tigers will
show their stripes in their first invite at Hinsdale at the beginning of September.
Hoffman Estates
Coach: Matthew Dowd
2007 Finish:10th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:20
Returnees:Matthew Perez SR, Kyle Gonzales JR, Stephen Chin SR, Cale Edens SR, Will Creedon SR,
Kyle Connelly JR, Jon Hunter JR, Eric Liu JR, Alex Oda JR, Bailey Armstrong SO.
A team that lost 5 quality runners  and ended up 10th in the super tough Schaumburg Sectional, the
Hawks and Coach Matthew Dowd will reload behind Senior Matthew Perez. Perez did not have the best
of Cross Country seasons, but rebounded in track running 9:31. He will depended on as the leader on this
squad along with being one of the top runners in the Mid Suburban League. Junior Kyle Gonzales was
one of the top sophomores in the Mid Suburban League last spring and will be one of the top runners in
the area this fall. Seniors Stephen Chin, Cale Edens and Will Creedon were strong on the JV level and will
have to step up their game. They will be the key to the squad. If their pack can stay within 30 seconds of
Perez/Gonzalez, the Hawks should be making a push to state.
Roselle Lake Park
Coach: Lance Murphy
2007 Finish:12th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:21
Returnees:Craig Watson SR, Luke Nally JR, Steve Krauss JR, Ryan Jorgensen JR, Trevor Murphy JR,
John Oldenberg SO, David Yochem SR, Tim Fergus JR, Tim Layer JR, Marc Ostrowski JR,
Kevin Miller JR, Patrick Dempsey JR.
A team that will fly under the radar for most observers, Lance Murphy has a talented squad returning
back to Roselle. There is a battle going on for the top spot. Right now, projected there would be Senior
Craig Watson, who keeps improving day by day and had an average track season. There is a group of
juniors to watch for: Luke Nally, Steve Krauss, Ryan Jorgensen, and Trevor Murphy. All have the
capability to be in the Lancer top 5 and even lead this squad.
This will be an interesting season for this squad. They should be the surprise team in the Upstate Eight.
We will find out how good they are at their own invite on September 13 and then in Peoria the following
week.
O’Fallon
Coach: Jon Burnett
2007 Finish:19th AAA State Meet
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:22
Returnees:Josh Parkinson SR (91, 15:45), Michael Scolarici SO (96, 15:47),
Matt Coon SR (108, 15:58), Luke Sanchez SR (129, 16:09), David Popp SR (150, 16:23),
Blake Harris SR (163, 17:05), Lee Wise JR (167, 17:12), Tyler Hambridge JR,
Jose Mendez JR, Jake Slaughter SO, Connor Ryan JR, Steven Jackson SO.
Coach Jon Burnett did a remarkable job last fall. After 4 runners, who were figured to be in the top 7,
transferred to other schools, Burnett grouped a squad together that ended up qualifying for State in the
new AAA. Well, all 7 runners return from that squad and the future looks bright for this down state
squad.
Summer training has gone well for Coach Burnett and he has been pleased with the outcome. “This could
be our deepest team yet,” said Burnett. Matt Coon had a great season in track and will be one of the
many runners challenging for the #1 position. Sophomore Michael Scolarci has also improved and will be
in the mix. Senior Josh Parkinson was the top runner for O’Fallon at last year’s state meet and will be
looked for leadership. According to Coach Burnett, Junior Connor Ryan and Junior Jose Mendez have had
breakout summers and will be in the hunt for a top 7 spot.
This team has the capability of making back to state again and also challlenging Edwardsville for a
conference championship.
Naperville Central
Coach: David Ashton
2007 Finish:7th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:23
Returnees:Prateek Kumar SR, Dan Halleck SR, Kevin Murphy SR, Mitch Gilbert JR,
Erik Pelligrino JR, Kyle Burkwald JR, Sharill Killinsworth JR, Brian Banser SR,
Matt Juetschke JR, Lucas Valentine SO, Adam Bigot JR, Paul Choe SO
Stephen Couch, Evan Thayer, Stephen O’Donnell and Brandon Gittleman have all graduated and moved
on. This foursome was a strong nucleus for Coach David Ashton. This season looks as it will be a
rebuilding one for the RedHawks. But I think they will surprise some people this season. Hence the #23
pre-season rating.
There is a solid group of 3 seniors, Prateek Kumar, Dan Halleck, and Kevin Murphy, all with
the chance to be the #1 man. Their pack will be tight but will need someone to step up. Ashton has a
tough sophomore class from last season moving up into the Varsity led by Mitch Gilbert and Eric
Pelligrino. This squad will be interesting to watch this season. The first two big meets, at Hinsdale and at
Peoria, will show what kind of pack Central will have this fall.
Minooka
Coach: Kevin Gummerson
2007 Finish:6th AAA Normal West Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:24
Returnees:Josh Keck SR, Sean Coyle JR, Julian Hoshell SR, Kevin Smith JR, Ryan Kelley SR,
Brian Bakowski SR, Marcus Rangel SR, Joeie Ruttegier SR, Mike Goodale SR,
Nick Ranch SR, Ryan Warczynski SR, Bryan Jones SO, Alex Hoshell SO.
Coach Kevin Gummerson returns 5  that ran at the Normal West Sectional and just missed a trip to
Peoria. The Indians did not have a banner track season, but did have a great summer training. “It seems
like we have dealt with a ton of adversity since that last sectional meet,” said Gummerson.”However,
everybody is now chomping at the bit to start this season up! “ They do so being rated #24 in our Pre-
Season Ratings.
Senior Josh Keck will be looked as the leader for this squad. But according to Gummerson, watch for
Junior Sean Coyle  and Senior Julian Hoshell to close the gap. Senior Ryan Kelley has also had a great
summer and will contribute. Watch for incoming Freshmen Kyle Smith, Andrew Carpenter, Kody Lewan,
and Colin Nielsen to have the possibility of sneaking close to the top 7.
Minooka missed qualifying for state last year by 10 points. “We took a huge step last year and they
realized what they need to do if they want to get to the next level,” said Gummerson.”So that finish
made them hungry.” If they can keep on the circle of improvement that they have been on, watch for this
squad to surpass their sectional finish of last season.
Schaumburg
Coach: Jim Macnider
2007 Finish:9th AAA Schaumburg Sectional
2008 Dyestat Illinois AAA Pre-Season Rating:25
Returnees:Pat Lesiewicz JR, Phil Allman SR, Chris Gomez SR, Jay McNamara SR, Travis Morrison SO,
Connor Prizy SO, Andrew Cordoza SO, Mike Petty SR, Ryan Humphries SR.
This is a team that might be rated a little too low, but will be dangerous at the end of the year. Jim
Macnider has the reputation of having his runners ready at the right time. “The summer has been going
well but very quickly,” said Macnider. “We have had a good summer with all the key guys training well.”
Macnider has 4 runners returning from a squad that had a fall at their own sectional, but should be back
up towards the front this season.
Junior Pat Lesiewicz will be one of the premier runners in the Mid Suburban League and also in the state.
He is running with a little chip on his shoulder. “He had a very good track season and has been motivated
by the fact that he did not run at cc state and did poorly at state track,” said Macnider. It is also a fact
that because of the training program Macnider implements, juniors see a dramatic improvement in their
times from their sophomore season to the junior season. Seniors Phil Allman, Chris Gomez, and Jay
McNamara all contributed in the top 7 last year and look to do so again this fall. The big key for the
Saxons will come from 3 sophomores: Travis Morrison, Connor Prizy and Andrew Cordoza. Macnider see
all of these three making immediate contributions, especially Morrison, who was most of last season
with a stress fracture in his heel. Morrison only ran outdoor track and ran 10:00 for 3200. Watch for him
to “raise some eyebrows”.
This squad is rated low right now, but I expect them in the hunt by the time we get to November. And
they should qualify for state again. Since 1980, a Schaumburg runner has always been in the state meet.
They have have missed making  it as a team 4 times…the fun fact is that they have never missed two
years in a row. Watch out for this squad.
