Belvidere North has been undefaeted all season against Class AA competition and ranked #1 by Dyestat Illinois the entire
season. They will be one of the team favorites when they toe the line Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Paul Zeman looks to
be recovered from an illness that has set him back a little. Anthony Gedwill and Cody Laseman have filled in the last couple
of weeks and will be in the hunt for all-state individually. The key for North is keeping their split under 40 seconds. If this
is done, they will be in the hunt for a trophy.

Upon further review, Fenton is a state team qualifier. After reviewing the finish line video, Fenton tied for 5th and will get
the opportunity to run one more week. Nathan and Justin Smith are a strong first 2 for Coach John Kurtz. The pack is
getting closer as the season progresses…it will need to have a gap of 70 seconds off of Nathan Smith if they want a chance
for a top 10 finish.

Breese Mater Dei is back in the state meet after a 4th place finish at Centralia. The Knights have a solid pack led by Blake
Ofstedal. The 1-5 split has improved the last two weeks down to 80 seconds…if it gets smaller, they could be in the hunt for
an upper tier finish.

Crystal Lake Central ran their best race of the season at the Belvidere Sectional  and should improve on that effort this
Saturday. Ryan Alvarez and Ben Flavin have flip flopped 1-2 spots the last couple of weeks and could both be in the top 25
at state. The split last week was 42 seconds…it could be great for the Tigers if they can dip under 40 seconds.

With the return of Kyle Boone after missing most of the season with an injury, Dixon has received a boost that could put
them in the hunt for the state team championship. Kasey Ferrigan has been the lead man all season for the Dukes. Boone
and Matt Logan are close together and need to be within 20 seconds of Ferrigan. Eric Dewey and Zach Payne will be close
together and need to be within 50 seconds of Ferrigan for Dixon to have the capability of winning the team title.

Galesburg looked strong last week in getting 3rd at the East Peoria Sectional and look forward to duplicating that effort on
Saturday. Greg Whittle and Gabe Moreno have traded off the top spot all season…both could have the possibility of being
in the top 25. Luke Junk ran great last week and with Quincy Guerrero, form a good 2nd pack. The split last week was a
season best of 55 seconds…the Silver Streaks could have a great finish if the split is under 50 seconds.

strong first two in Ian Sanchez and Rocco Mazzanti, who could flirt with a top 25 finish on Saturday. This team has a tight

Springfield High has been on a mission all season to win state. They could this weekend. The Senators looked very strong in
trouncing a field at Centralia last Saturday. Brad Walwer and Matt Havey have been the lead runners for Coach Dan Devlin.
This is a team that could have 2 or 3 all state runners in this race. Justin Lee can also be in that mix. Connor Brown and
Tyler Pence have been towards the front as well and could have big races. This is a team that needs to run an ordinary
race…not doing anything out of the ordinary. If this happens, they can go back to Springfield with a state championship.

Sacred Heart-Griffin qualified for state with a 5th place finish in the Centralia Sectional. The team consists of no seniors in
the top 7, but Ed Gaffigan’s squad struggled early but is peaking at the right time. Juniors Sean Ryan and Brian McMahon
lead this team. The split has the possibility of being under  50 seconds Saturday, which would cause a good and high team
finish.

The defending AA state champs have been on a rollercoaster all season. Last Saturday was their best race of the season so far
as they finished 2nd at Belvidere. Matthew Gilmer, out since Peoria Woodruff with an injury, has improved the last two
races and will be in the hunt for the individual title. Tyson Kinsley has been a plus for  Coach Mike Lambdin filling in as the
#1 man while Gilmer was out. The last 3 weeks their 1-5 split has been around 90 seconds. It needs to be around 65 seconds
if Sycamore wants to return home with a trophy.

Troy Triad has been one of the top teams in AA south this season and they left Centralia with a 2nd place finish. Trent Ross,
Brett Conway, and Nathan Armes have been interchangable place-wise the last few weeks. This squad ran a strong 22
second split last weekend. If they can repeat that feat with a runner in the first 35, Triad could finish in the top 5.

The Foxes escaped the tough East Peoria Sectional with a 5th place finish…and also their best team performance so far this
season. Either Jake Austin and Max Sliwa have been the #1 man all season, both with the ability to be in the top 25 on
Saturday. Dan Szopinski ran his best race of the season and will need to duplicate that effort at Detweiller. Best split of the
season last week at 33 seconds. Duplicated could mean a great team finish in AA.
Team Race
The team battle should come down to 3 teams, but expect more to be in the mix. Last season in the initial running of the
"new AA”, 6 teams were within 20 points of each other. The same thing could occur Saturday. Belvidere North has been at
the top of the Dyestat Illinois ratings all season and have the capability to win. Strong runs will be needed from Paul Zeman
and Anthony Gedwell. Dixon looked extremely tough last week at East Peoria and have the capability of winning. Kasey
Ferrigan will be in the top 5 and the Dukes could have 2 more in the first 25. Springfield crushed the field at Centralia and
have the capability of winning it all. Good races from Brad Walwer and Matt Havey will be needed. After that, any one can
step in. Normal University has been tough all season and will have to rely on a tight pack with James Clay being towards the
front.  Sycamore has experienced a resurgence with the return of Matthew Gilmer and could be in there. Galesburg has a
solid first 2 in Moreno and Whittle and will be in the mix. Peoria Notre Dame will be tough on their “home course” and
will need a strong run from CJ Elward. Around 95 points will it take to win this meet.
Individual Race
Tim Hird of Rock Island Alleman has run strong the last couple of weeks. With his strong Sectional performance at East
Peoria, Hird appears to be the favorite. There will be, however many runners nipping at his heels. Mark Phillips of
Wheaton Academy has been strong most of the season and won at Belvidere last week. Matthew Gilmer  of Sycamore is
rounding into shape after being out half the season with an injury…he will be in the mix. Lucas Cherry of Carbondale is the
secret weapon out of the south who will surprise a lot of people. In only his 2nd season of running, Cherry has blossomed
into a great  runner with the capability of placing in the top 5. Clay Elward of Peoria Notre Dame is always tough at
Detweiller and will be towards the front again Saturday. James Clay of Normal University could push into the first 5 with a
great race. Also watch for Nathan Smith of Fenton, Matt Havey of Springfield, Ed McDaniel of Oak Forest, and Matt Logan
of Dixon all with the capability of placing in the top 10.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL ATHLETES AND COACHES THIS WEEKEND !!!
