Weekend Wrap up #1
(4/5/08)
Hinsdale Relays at Hinsdale South High School

The first true outdoor weekend was quite a pleasant surprise. The weather was nice and bright with temperatures reaching the mid-60’s.

Of the seven meet records that were broken, one in particular was destroyed- the 4x1600. This event is so rare that it is only featured in a handful of meets around the country. Still, a nice sized crowd appeared both knowledgeable and appreciative of the artifact. It only seemed fitting that Naperville Neuqua Valley, the supreme distance team in all of America, would appear at an relatively low-key invite (for them) and make history.

Neuqua Valley -→ 17:35.9. Splits: Aaron Beattie- 4:32.6, Danny Pawola 4:28.9, Jim Riddle 4:23.8, Chris Derrick 4:10.4.

Derrick downplayed the momentum achievement and instead looked ahead to the team getting better and of the upcoming showdown at the prestigious Arcadia Invite in Arcadia, Ca next weekend. Derrick acknowledged that two of his teammates (Pawola and Riddle) will be shooting for the elusive sub 9:00 2mile club there. He will be running a 5k. No specific goal for him: “just get out there and see what happens”, said Derrick.
However, his recent workouts suggest something real big. The Neuqua Clan completed a monster track session of 8x800m with 1:1 rest. Derrick did his portion in 2:13-2:15. In between was two 75 minute runs during the week and another track session- a 4m tempo on the track with the last 5k in 15:10…

Jackie Joyner Kersee Relays-

E St. Louis Sr. hosted the 17th Annual Relays. The host Flyerettes won the title with 100 pts but Proviso East stole the show and made it known that they are going to have something to say in who wins sprint relay titles in next month’s state final. The Pirates reportedly won the 4x1, and 4x2 in off the chart times: 47.8 and 1:39.6. They completed the morning/afternoon/evening session by placing second in the 4x4r in a smoking 3:50.8 to nationally ranked McClure-Berkeley, Missouri.

Homewood-Flossmoor Invite-
Defending state champion Barrington continued its winning ways at HF. The Fillies thrashed a solid field scoring 138pts to runner up Rock Island (93). They collected six first place medals including outstanding victories by Molly Glantz in the 300H (44.4) and in the 800 (2:16.8).
