Next wave of HSers honored for summer age-group action

–The below group was picked from the National Level Youth Nationals and Junior Olympics competitions held by USA Track and Field (USATF) and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). They are made up of the regularly contested prep events, and does not include relays, walks, nor those where the implement size is different at the two competitions (javelin). These athletes are ages 13 and 14 and will be the next wave of stars at the high school level next year or the year after.

100 Meters
First Team
Daniel Gray (Florida) - Third place finisher AAU Natl JO 11.13w
Jeremy Hicks (Louisiana) - Second place finisher AAU Natl JO 11.11w - 1st AAU Club Natls 11.20
Brandon Sanders (South Carolina) - 1st USATF Yth Natls 100 11.07w - 1st USATF Natl JO 11.07
Jerimy Strainge (Florida) - 1st AAU JO 10.93w
–It was all about margin of victory at the two National Championship finals competitions, with Strainge and Sanders taking their respective national title contests by two meters as the duo could lead an impressive 2011 US World Youth Championship sprint crew. Southern US domination here.

–Sanders continued his sprint domination at USATF JO Nationals with another dominating win here. Coleman was third to Sanders at the USATF Youth Nationals earlier in the summer, then raced to a big win at the AAU JO competition in Michigan.

–A little cross-over here with Coleman, an eighth grader from Suffolk, Virginia, taking the USATF Youth Nationals and then winning the AAU Nationals in the year’s top Championship level time at this level.

Cameron Thornton (Georgia) - 1st AAU JO Natls 1:58.79
–Thornton was busy at the AAU JO’s with action at 800 and 1500 meters, where he was second. The Matiski twins sandwiched Muniz at the USATF Youth Nationals before James won the USATF National JO title in 2:01.94.

1500 Meters

–The aggressive Smock hit the circuit, taking both the USATF and AAU National titles, the latter by nearly a full seven seconds. Jones, Worley, and Hybl trailed Conner at the USATF Nationals.

–Schienbein, who will be a ninth grader at Union County HS in Indiana this Fall, was busy this summer, with a 9:14.19 USATF JO National win that was not far off a fifteen year old Divisional record there. He swept the four summer age-group title contests at this distance and was successful at the 1500 also.

–Ann Arbor area star Drake Johnson, who will be a freshman at Community High School in the Fall, was close to legendary Toya Jones (Texas) and his 13.34 AAU Youth record with his 13.39 run in that title meet, with the powerful Kenneth Walker III from California’s San Francisco Bay area the USATF JO winner at 13.52-13.63 over smooth striding Terrell Clements (Texas).
