at Soda Springs!

The squads recently returned from a one week high altitude training camp at Soda Springs, CA (located near the Sugar Bowl ski
resort). Here's our season outlooks:

Girls
This is likely to be the strongest girls team in HHS history. The team will get much needed senior leadership from Amber Machado
(3-time section meet qualifier, 5:45 PR for 1600m), while 4 relatively untested but talented girls will probably comprise the rest of
the top 5. The four girls (in alphabetical order) are:
-- Kathleen Brooks, Junior. Kathleen is in her second year of cross country. Last year she was the Huskies #2 runner and placed
47th at the 2007 Sac Joaquin Meet. Kathleen runs the long sprint races during the spring and has track bests of 1:03 and 2:37 for
the 400 and 800 meter events.
-- Kaitlyn Daugherty, Freshman: Kaitlyn has never run cross country but has a 2:44 PR for 800m as an 8th grader
-- Aubrey Fisher, Sophomore: Aubrey has never run cross country but posted a 12:29 for 3200m as a freshman this spring for
the Huskies.
-- Becky Hobby, Freshman: Becky has never run cross country but posted a 5:30 for a full mile to set the meet record at the Pope
Relays junior high meet as an 8th grader this spring.
At camp, the girls proved that they are fit by all placing well in our annual 7.1 mile time trial around Donner Lake.

Boys
The theme for this year is to “surprise the section”. After the 2003 boys team won the section title with an impressive 50-point
victory over second place Colfax, Husky results at the section meet have been slowly declining. This year’s group seems determined
to reverse that trend. The team will likely be led by the “Fire and Ice” duo of Zack “T-Bird” Tanis and Ismael “Ish” Felix. Tanis, a senior,
was out kicked for the final berth to the state meet in 2007 and has been a varsity competitor all 3 of his seasons at HHS. Felix, a junior,
has been logging 50-70 miles per week this summer and at the Donner Lake time trial posted HHS’s all time #2 mark, running 47:38
(Tanis finished in 48:03 for #3 all time). 2 other runners will likely make strong additions to the Boys team:
Jacob Aldava, Sophomore: Jacob was the 5th place runner at last year’s TVL JV meet. He has shown good progress this summer and
should be a strong asset to the team.
Chris Benevidez, Senior: Chris will be competing in his first cross country season as injury ended his 2007 season on the first day of
practice. Chris has been running solid mileage all summer (25-40 miles per week) and should be able to make a solid contribution to
the TVL title chase.
Results from the Donner Lake time trial indicate that both Chris and Jacob are in good enough shape right now to place in the top 15
at the TVL championship meet. This is a very good sign, as their fitness will only improve between now and October.
The boys have a possible Achilles heel; they have not found a solid #5 runner yet. Sophomore Lucas Fisher ran a respectable time
around Donner Lake (58:13), but was still almost 4 minutes behind Benevidez over the 7.1 mile course. Other candidates for the last
scoring spot are newcomer Erik Jensen (2:16 for 800 after spending most of his sophomore track season as a sprinter) and 3rd year
runner Tommy Tomlinson.

Meadow Run: Coach Bernard and Ismael Felix head out into the hills

Boys Hill: The runners started the workout at 10 second intervals to prevent racing, but
they ended up naturally forming groups anyway

Chris Benevidez: Those down hills on the repeats seem way too short.

Becky's Hill: Becky Hobby (5:30y as an 8th grader) works the uphill during the repeat session

Warm Up Drills: Team drills prior to a PM hill repeat session

Kidd Lake Road: Team heads out on a long downhill (which they eventually had to come back up)

Team Stretch: Stretching before an AM run down Kidd Lake Road
