Emily Mattoon is the latest of the great Rancho Bernardo vaulters out of San Diego, with the defending State Champion the number three returnee in the US for the coming season at 12-10, and at least a dozen meets over 12-00 during the 2008 spring. Mackenzie Landry had a fine first year out of the Sac Joaquin section, was fifth in the State Meet, and was the nation’s number three frosh vaulter with her summer 11-11.75 best in the event. Brooke Arthur just missed out on the State Finals last year and was second in the Southern Section title affair, with a 12-00 best. Highland’s Tianna Webberly was another who missed out on a State Finalist spot while jumping the same height in Friday's qualifying as some in the final nine. Webberly had an 11-09 best and was fifth in the Southern Section State qualifier. Kortney Ross was the number eight soph in the nation last year with her 12-04 best and was the San Diego Section runner-up to Mattoon. Amanda Klinchuch will lead the Central Section vaulters this spring, with a runner-up from that area of the state last May at 11-06 and State Meet experience. Allison Koressel (11-06 best) and Claire Hawkins (11-10 best mark) were sixth and seventh in the Southern Section State Qualifying competition, with Nicola Garoutte another fine young Northern California Vaulter who had an 11-07 best and was fifth in the NCS Championships in the event as a ninth grader.

Tori Anthony (Castilleja, Palo Alto) set a National Record in the 2007 State Meet at 14-01, with that still the National Federation Record. The next week she jumped 14-01.25 at the Golden West Invitational for an all-time High School standard. This past year she was at UCLA and though hindered by mononucleosis for part of the year, still vauled 13-09.75 to rank fourth on the all-time Bruin list in the event. She was hindered by illness up through the PAC-10 Outdoor Championships, but returned to tie for 15th in the NCAA DI competition, and she was tied for 13th at the US Olympic Trials.
