Summary of California Top Ten, Week Ending Nov. 3, 2007

SUMMARY AFTER WEEK NINE (Thru Nov. 3)
Action this past weekend was confined mainly to league finals, but that doesn’t mean there were not some outstanding performances.
Saugus won the Foothill League finals at Crescenta Valley Park in La Crescenta with a course record 92:36 over the well-traveled three-mile course. Agoura, led by Amy Skieresz, held the old mark at 93:32. The Centurions took the top five places and that did not include No. 2 runner Kaylin Mahoney, who won the freshman race. In the past couple of weeks Mahoney has been just a few steps in back of senior Katie Dunn, who won the varsity race in 17:54. Mahoney, had she run varsity, would probably have improved Saugus’ team time by about one minute.
The Sunset League finals in Orange County, arguably the best girls league in the State, were held early in the week after being postponed by the effects of the California fires. Fountain Valley and Esperanza (Anaheim) each scored 45 points, but Fountain Valley prevailed on a better sixth runner, 16 to 19. Newport Harbor (Newport Beach) was third with 71 points and Edison (Huntington Beach) was fourth with 86.
Carondelet (Concord), Trabuco Hills (Mission Viejo), Dana Hills (Dana Point) Carlmont (Belmont) and Redlands all had comfortable league wins. Trabuco Hills was particularly impressive in the Sea View League. Christine Babcock of Woodbridge (Irvine) won the three-mile race in 16:58 and the Mustangs put four runners inside of one minute of Babcock and their fifth runner was 14 seconds behind their fourth runner. Their five-person gap was 37 seconds.
This coming weekend the Central Section, Sac-Joaquin Section and Central Coast Section will hold their finals. Two teams to keep an eye on are Ponderosa (Shingle Springs), who had the fastest qualifying time in Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section races, and Foothill (Santa Ana).
