1/30/99 at Reggie Lewis Center, Boston MA McIntyre Relaysresults by hometownsports.com The girls team from Manchester Central, in New Hampshire, will want to remember their performance in the 4x800 and 4x400 events for a long time. Central's coaches surprised the team by bringing them to the McIntyre Relays. The team in turn surprised the coaches by setting a new New England girls indoor record for the 4x800 with a time of 9:15.85 and the meet record for the 4x400 with a time of 4:00.84. According to assistant coach Chris Haveles-Pelletier, the coaches considered attending a relay carnival in New Hampshire "but we opted to go here because we figured the competition was better". Senior Lizzie Gatti was pleased with the decision. "I love coming down here", she said of the Reggie Lewis Center, "the track is so fast". Gatti described the team as being relaxed before the race, not looking to break any records. "We had no clue what the record was. We saw right before we ran that it was 9:35 and we figured that we could get it, but we didn't think that we were going to crush it by 20 seconds." She also notes that even though Manchester was second in the nation in the outdoor 4x800 last year, "this is a great improvement because our past indoor school record was only 9:24". Other members of the team were Jenny Stevens, Tricia Hewitt and Jill Laurendeau. Hewitt, a freshman, had never run in the 4x800 before. In the boys 4x800 there was no record set, but the race featured the most exciting finish of the day. When Aaron Schwirian of Newton North and Andrij Bamber of Xavier came around the last turn, Bamber was a full step behind. Just before the finish line he pulled up even with Schwirian and managed to plant his foot over the line first. Xavier, of Middletown, Connecticut, won with a time of 8:03.91. Second place finisher Newton North recorded 8:03.92. Another memorable race by a boys team was run by Oliver Ames in the Distance Medley, but not because of a close finish. In fact, the team of Chris Johnson, Seth Clark, Steve Santoro and Andy Powell won by a full 8 seconds with a time of 10:15.16. This time not only destroyed the meet record of 10:28.50, but approached the US High School record of 10:12.18 set by Bernards High School of Bernardsville, New Jersey. Results for the Robert B.
