Frederick County Championships
BRUNSWICK MD, 10/25/97 - Middletown's precocious young girls served notice they are a team, not just a star, by upsetting Linganore, 50-52, to win the Frederick County high school cross country championship. Knights freshman star Randy Buzzell won wire to wire and junior Molly Imming earned 7th, but it was three more fast improving freshmen who made the difference against the always powerful Lancers. Laura Pumphrey was 10th, Jessica Bissnet 14th, and Andrea Pope 18th to break up Linganore's pack, which had beaten Middletown decisively three times earlier this year. Buzzell broke from the pack at the start and finished in 19:38 for a startling 40-second margin over Jennifer Ford (Thomas Johnson), who was the fastest girl at last year's Maryland state championships. Linganore placed Susan Ludwick third and Stephanie Hayes fifth; Gretchen Unger of Brunswick was fourth. Meanwhile, the Linganore boys upheld their favorite's role with 35 points to Frederick's 68 and Middletown's 70. The winners went 1-2-4 with Erik Necciai first in 17:00, Craig Samoviski a second behind, and Scott Herrick fourth. Walkersville's Ryan Campbell was third.
