Girls Eastern States Invitational

Big Day for Clarke's Jelley

By Gary Glancy. STAFF WRITER

Last year it was Sayville's Jillian Mastroianni. This time, another youngster has made a name for herself in the track circuit beyond Long Island.

Clarke freshman Danielle Jelley has improved all season, breaking a school record in the 1,500 meters in the Nassau Individual Championships and shattering her own school record in the 3,000 at the state meet last weekend.

Now, Jelley has a first-place finish in a non-county meet to cherish in her final race of the season as she won the 3,000 in 10:35.64 yesterday at the girls Eastern States Invitational at St. John's. Neither the oppressive heat nor fatigue from the state meet could stop Jelley, who vaulted herself into the lead at the outset, then let her long, graceful strides take over from there.

"I'm still on this peak after doing well at states. I'm very happy [with the win]," Jelley said. "I'm definitely happy with the way the season ended."

Mastroianni, who didn't enter this year, won the 3,000 last year and has dominated the Suffolk track scene this season. Now it was Jelley's turn, but it wasn't easy.

"I was trying to decide between doing the mile and 3,000, and I figured the weather would have cooled down for the 3,000," Jelley said. "But it was still hot out there. I tried to ignore it, but my feet were burning - it's hard to ignore that."

Meredith DeGennaro found it hard to ignore a painful right ankle that has bothered her for the last month, but the Connetquot junior still managed to win the long jump (18 feet, 3 inches). DeGennaro sprained the ankle in practice and has not been able to practice jumping since. "I kept feeling it pop out when I hit the board," said DeGennaro, who was third last year. "It feels good to win here because I haven't been jumping well. It gives me a lot of confidence." Teammate Marguerite Bezeca was second in the mile in 5:20.6.

Long Island also had two relay winners. The Northport team of Jillian Livolsi, Noreen Walsh, Lauren Markowski and Regina Walsh began the day by taking the 4x1600 (22:43.5), an event the team won at the St. Anthony's Invitational in early May. That performance ranked Northport fifth in the country at the distance, coach Tim Dearie said.

"The [hot] conditions didn't favor good times [yesterday]," Dearie said, "but a win is a win and three of the girls are seniors [Livolsi, Markowski and Regina Walsh] so it's a nice way for them to end their career." Northport trailed by 19 seconds heading into the final leg but Regina Walsh pulled out the win.

The St. Anthony's team of Pilar Marin, Elizabeth Kirwin, Alicia Terry and Erin Raggio finished the day by winning the 4x800 in a season-best time of 9:36.47. Raggio, a hurdler, was running the distance for the first time in competition. Kerry Saladino, who normally runs on the relay team, was unable to attend the meet.
