RESCHEDULED APRIL 25TH ARCADIA INVITATIONAL ANOTHER GREAT ONE!
(All Athletes below are from California unless indicated)

The Thirty-First Annual Arcadia High School Invitational, with the
rescheduled event to be held April 25th at the Los Angeles' suburban school's
campus, will once again feature the finest in prep track and field. The
Invitational schedule will not be changed, and competition will begin with
field event action at 4:00 p.m. and running events at 6:15. The competition
that has featured sixty athletes who later went on to represent the United
States in the last four Olympic games, and nine national record performances
in the last decade and a half should have a field of performers at least equal
to last year's that provided eighteen nation-leading prep performances to that
point of the season.
The great recent tradition of female speed in Southern California will
continue once again at Arcadia, led by Track & Field News Prep Athlete of the
Year, Angela Williams (Chino) and some great relay teams. Williams won the
100 here last year at 11.50 and will go after Marion Jones' Meet Record of
11.38, with the Chino senior ending 1997 one one-hundredth outside the over
twenty year old prep all-time best of 11.13 by Chandra Cheeseborough from
1976. Angela will be challenged by the latest young sprint great in the
country, ninth grader Erica Whipple (Suncoast, Riviera Beach, Fl), who has
rocketed 11.60 (100m) and 23.29 (200m) already this year and leads the country
among preps in the 200 (Williams leads over 100 meters at 11.51). The 100 and
200 meter match-ups will be classics that should keep the local star,
Williams, very honest!!!. Sprint action will spill over early in the Meet to
the relays, Wilson (Long Beach) 45.63 facing Morse, San Diego's best on the
Girls' side in both relays. Morse features the top junior high long
sprinter in the nation last year, with Monique Henderson blazing an amazing
53.85 400m in the eighth grade (and 53.72 already this spring)! Wilson has
the potential to challenge its National Record in the 4x400 of 3:37.38 this
year, welcoming super frosh Leshinda Demus (54.23 a few weeks back) and Joni
Smith (53.68) (back from 1997 injury) to go along with Latrice Borders 54.47
and Angelita Green (transfer) at 55.27.
Great speed and relay action will also high-light the Boys half of the
meet. The 100 meters will continue battles between a great group of
California dashers--Justin Fargas (Notre Dame, Sherman Oaks), the defending
state champ at 100 meters, has run 10.55 this year, with Miguel Fletcher

(Alemany, Mission Hills) 10.44w. Joseph Hunter (Vacaville) has been very
strong in the Sacramento Valley area (10.65 100m 21.03 200m 1997). In the
200, Fletcher leads the nation auto-timed at 21.47 (21.32w) and was the
Northridge Invitational winner, with Ike Okenwa (Morse, San Diego) having run
a 20.9 this spring. Sultan McCullough (Muir, Pasadena), the nation's quickest
200m returnee from 1997 (20.62) is entered in the 200 (21.1 last week in a
dual meet) and the 400, where he relayed 45.8 in 1997. The Relays will
feature these and other speedsters. Muir won the 400m sprint relay in this
meet last year in the nation's quickest time of the entire season at 40.28,
with three of that foursome returning this season, led by McCullough.
University City (San Diego) 41.54, Morse (San Diego), and Serra (Gardena) will
challenge the Mustangs in the short 400m relay! In the 1600m relay event
defending champion Muir (3:10.99) will be challenged by Dominguez (Compton)
3:16.53 (98), who bested the Muir squad a couple of weeks back!
The Girls' portion of the meet will one of the top Prep Girls Discus
fields ever gathered during the regular season as the top throwers in the
nation will compete . Krista Keir (South, Westerville, Oh) has thrown 181'11,
with Stephanie Brown (Arroyo Grande) 174'2 , and Mandy Borschowa (Mt. Si,
Snoqualmie, Wa) 171'11 this season. In the Shot Put, Keir threw 51'05.5 in
winning the National Scholastic Indoor Championships, with Rebekah Green
(Columbus Girls, Oh) 48'01.5, and Stephanie Brown 46'3 making it another super
contest!
The Girls Pole Vault has the top three outdoor returnees in the nation!
Brooke Lankard (Golden West, Visalia) (12'4) and Heather Sickler (Camarillo)
(12'03.5) are among the top ten in U.S. Prep History. The Girls High Jump is
led by Camee' Williams (South, Springfield, Oh) 5'9. Camee' is all over the
place and is one of the nation's best Long Jumpers, with a 19'09.5 best, with
speedster Angela Williams (Chino) dabbling here at 19'8.25w best, with Brianna
Glen (La Mirada) 19'00.25 from 1997. Defending Champ here and at State,
Andria Booker (El Camino, Oceanside) leads the Triple Jump at 40'11, with
Briana Glenn leads a 40'03.75 best, and Darnesha Griffith (Trabuco Hills,
Mission Viejo) a fine 39'09.75. Ohioan Camee' Williams also leads the Girls
hurdles at 14.00 (100mHH) and 42.13 (300mLH).
Brian Lindsey (Tampanogus, Provo, Utah) will headline the 1600m, he ran
4:15.42 indoors at altitude. Joe Urbanski (Salpointe Catholic, Tucson, Az)
9:13.72 leads a strong 3200m group, with soph Josh Rohatinsky (Provo, Ut),
9:15.3, tough.
The Girls 3200m has a trio rated among the top ten in the nation--Lauren
Fleschman (Canyon, Canyon Country) (10:38.13), Kimi Welsh (Yucaipa)
(10:38.96), and Allyson Marquand (University, Irvine) (10:39.17), with soph
Sarah Gorton (Mountain Pointe, Phoenix, Az) 10:38.8 two weekends ago.
Angelita Green (Wilson, Long Beach) was the state runner-up last year at
2:09.61 (#2 prep in the nation). The Girls Distance Medley annually
provides a flock of the nation's top performances, with Ayala (Chino Hills)
looking very strong.
Marcell Almond (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs) has already raced under 14.0
for the 110m High Hurdles this year, Nick Ray (Ridgeview, Bakersfield) 37.62
leads the 300m Intermediate Hurdles. Ryan Meuse (Simi Valley) is one of the
nation's best at 1:52.57 in the 800 meters.
Van Mounts (Bakersfield) has thrown the Shot Put 68-07.5 to lead the
nation outdoors this spring, with Reedus Thurmond (Serra, Gardena) 192'10 to
lead the country in the Discus. Three others over 60' will challenge Mounts
in the Shot, with fast-improving Richard Legarra (Wilson, Hacienda Heights)
186'2 challenging in the Discus. Morse (San Diego's) returns Charles James
(24'2) in the Long Jump, with Mark Unzueta (Lemoore) 16'2 leading the Pole
Vault. 6-10 High Jumpers Marcell Almond (St. Paul, Santa Fe Springs), Casey
Clark (Mt. Spokane, Wa), and Ricky Duff (Manual Arts, L.A.) will batte there.
