Monocacy Valley Athletic League Championships

Middletown Sweeps; Hunter Cross (NHG), Randy Buzzell (MID) Star

Middletown blew away predictions of a close contest with North Hagerstown by rolling up 40-point wins in both boys and girls divisions of the 10-team MVAL Championships at South Hagerstown High School.  Hunter Cross of North Hagerstown and Randy Buzzell of Middletown were the individual stars of a beautiful evening.

BOYS - Detailed Results

Despite Hunter Cross' heroics for North Hagerstown, Middletown was a strong 150-106 winner, with points coming in 17 out of 18 events.  Keith Dochtermann's sprint double (11.5 and 23.5) constituted the Knights' only running victories, but they piled up runner up points all night.  The Church Hill gang of Reed Saunders and Derek Dye led the field event side.  Saunders won the pole vault (12-6), while Dye gained 28 points by winning the high jump and scoring in long jump, triple jump, and high hurdles.

Hunter Cross double doubled in the hurdles (15.5 and 41.8) and the horizontal jumps (20' 8 and 41' 10.5).  FSK won four events with three relays to go with Scott Glover's 800 (2:02.1).  Doug Allen of Walkersville doubled in the distances (4:42.8 and 10:20.2).  Western Maryland leader Matt Peters of South Hagerstown doubled in the throws (54' 2 and 155' 1).

Team Scores:  Middletown 150, N. Hagerstown 106, FSK 86, Boonsboro 60, Williamsport 50, Walkersville 44, S. Hagerstown 25, Smithsburg 20, Brunswick 11, Catoctin 6.

GIRLS - Detailed Results

Led by Randy Buzzell, Middletown's runners ganged up on the field with multiple scorers in the 800, 1600 and 3200 to go with 4x400 and 4x800 relay wins.  Buzzell posted Western Maryland season best times in the 800 (2:23.9) and 1600 (5:17.2) and helped on both relays.  Trinette Price (5' 3 HJ) and Natalie Dye (10' 0 PV) led the Lady Knights' always-strong field crew, and Suzy Turrell was second in a packed triple jump event (all 6 scorers were in the 31-foot range).

All girls thanked Catoctin All-American Kathy Messner for staying away and giving four other girls a chance to win blue ribbons.  (Kathy reportedly gave a school play priority for the evening.)

Team Scores:  Middletown 140.5, N. Hagerstown 95, Smithsburg 85, S. Hagerstown 50, Walkersville 47.5, Boonsboro 46, Brunswick 34, FSK 32, Williamsport 20, Catoctin 8.
