2004 summary
exploits of the 2003-2004 scholastic year

In its 8th year, DyeStat observes more fabulous achievements by American high school track and field and cross country athletes. Emphasis turned more toward sprints, but distance wasn't bad either.

Nike Athletes of the Year - Boys

by John Dye

These are the most outstanding high school athletes of the year in track and field and cross country. Anyone setting a national record was automatically selected. Then we added athletes with two US#1 performances or two national meet titles or one of each. The following meets were counted as national meets: Foot Locker, Simplot, National Scholastic Indoor Championships (NSIC), Nike Indoor Championships (NIC), Arcadia Invitational, Penn Relays, Great Southwest Classic (GSW), Golden West Invitational (GWI), adidas Outdoor Championships (AOC), and US Junior National. Honorable mention goes to such worthy contenders as Jacob Hernandez TX, Josh McDougal NY and J-Mee Samuels NC, all of whom had a single US#1 performance but no national titles, and Matt Withrow IL, who won Foot Locker but had no other titles.

Sprints - Xavier Carter FL - Elzie Coleman NY - Lashawn Merritt VA - Ivory Williams TX
Distance - Gavin Coombs CT - Victor Gras MA - Tim Harris FL - Shadrack Kiptoo NM - Galen Rupp OR
Hurdles - Kevin Craddock CA - Ted Ginn OH - Jason Richardson TX
Jumps - Ken Hall LA - Adam Sarafian NJ - Scott Sellers TX
Throws - Leif Arrhenius UT - Zach Lloyd NV

Jumps

Ken Hall
Tara LA 2005

  • Hall was US#1 in triple jump after winning the Louisiana state meet, but no one was prepared for his explosion at the USATF Junior Olympics. He shattered the national record by nearly a foot and added a windy 56-2.5 leap that left onlookers gasping.
  • USR - triple jump 54-10.25

DyeStatCal's Doug Speck was stunned by Hall's record setting performance at the USATF Junior Olympics.

"All who observed it left the stadium with a bit more reverence for this great sport of ours after observing Ken Hall's efforts this day. Just when you seem to put some limits on what is excellence in an activity, someone comes along and bashes down the door leaving you shaking your head."

  • US#1 - outdoor pole vault 17-4.5
  • 1st - pole vault GWI and AOC.

Scott Sellers
Cinco Ranch Katy TX 2005

  • Lean and lanky, Sellers broke the national indoor high jump record this year and has another year to gun for the outdoor record. One of his most important achievements was not even a winner -- a second in triple jump that added team points to help Cinco Ranch win the Texas 5A state championship without a relay win.
  • USR - indoor high jump 7-5.25 at NIC.
  • US#1 - indoor and outdoor high jump.
  • 1st - high jump at NIC and AOC.
