Mt. Tabor NC sophomore

warms up new track at Chapel Hill

Shana Cox runs with awesome power, which was on full display in the 300 meters at the Bishop Loughlin Games in the New York Armory December 21. Far bigger than most other sprinters, Cox got away slowly and trailed Juanita Broaddus of Philadelphia the first time across the finish line. But then she cranked it up and powered past Broaddus on the backstretch to win going away in 37.59 -- a new national indoor record, breaking the mark set last year by Natasha Hastings, who was in the audience after winning the 600 meters earlier.

"I just wanted to get my record back up," said Cox, referring to the big board in the Armory lobby that shows all-time records in the venerable building. Cox' 38.00 in the Loughlin a year ago gave her the Armory record, but Hastings took it down with her 37.99 USR later in the season.

These two will meet again, and the Armory's super fast Mondo surface should sizzle.

J-Mee Samuels is only a 15-year-old sophomore, but he already holds three all-time records in Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK 2003.

  • 200 meters by a freshman: 20.99
  • 100 meters by age 15: 10.42
  • 200 meters by age 14: 21.54

The other names on these age and class record lists are the likes of Roy Martin, William Reed, Brendan Christian, Henry Thomas, and Quincy Watts. So it is normal that great expectations surround the most precocious young male sprinter in the country.

In the first meet of his sophomore year, Samuels lit up the University of North Carolina's new indoor facility in the NC Opener January 4. He won the 55 meter dash in 6.42 and the 300 in 34.72. Both are the 3rd fastest in the US this season, and the 300 meter mark is the fastest on a flat track. That was good enough to be named the USATF youth athlete of the week as well as the Nike Athlete of the Week.
