Coaches Clinic
Nike and Eastbay present an educational component for coaches attending NTN - topics include building a successful HS XC program, the athlete-coach relationship, and footwear

Expanding on the success of its Nike Team Nationals Cross Country Championships, Nike and Eastbay will be hosting an educational clinic for coaches attending the event. The free clinic will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, OR, following the National Championship Race.  

In its first year, the clinic will offer coaches a variety of topics ranging from building a successful Cross Country program to the importance of the coach/athlete relationship.  Also offered will be a footwear/gait analysis session.

Program Specifics
The clinic runs from 3:00 p.m. –  6:30 p.m. and will include the following sessions:

Eastbay Team Sales Program:
Eastbay representatives will present their new Team Sales program to coaches looking to outfit their Cross Country and/or Track & Field programs.  This 15 minute discussion will inform coaches on how and where to purchase the latest team uniforms and gear to help them through the season.

Session 1:  Building & Sustaining a Successful XC Program:
An expert panel of High School Coaches share their philosophy, opinions and secrets to succeeding at the High School level.  Panelists will include:

Pat Tyson - University of Kentucky, Lexington, KY.  During his 20 years as the Head Coach of Mead High School in Spokane, Washington, Pat Tyson’s boy’s team complied an amazing dual meet record of 132-6.  Since 1986, his Harriers have combined for 26 individual state titles (TF&XC) and 12 State Cross Country Team Titles.  In the fall of 2004, his squad took 3rd at NTN and was a surprising 4th again in 2005.

Danny Green, The Woodlands High School, The Woodlands, Texas.  Coach Green’s boys Cross Country teams have won 12 state titles and in 2003 he had the #1 ranked team in America.  He was voted National Cross Country coach of the year in 2003.  In 2004, Coach Green’s boys placed 7th at NTN.  Dan has also produced 9 individual Foot Locker Finalist.

Dan Fitzsimmons, Yankton High School, Yankton, South Dakota.  Coach Fitzsimmons boys and girls teams have been ranked in the top 20 nationally for the last 4 years.  In 2004, his girls placed 3rd at the inaugural Nike Team Nationals.  At NTN 05, his girls placed 5th, while his boys squad finished 18th in the U.S.  Both his boys and girls teams have won consecutive South Dakota State Cross Country titles the last three seasons…2004, 2005 & 2006.   Dan has also produced the 2004 and 2005 girl’s individual NTN champion

Session 2:  The Athlete & Coach Relationship:
World-renowned athletes and their coaches share important information on their relationship and how it has helped them succeed. Leading these discussions will be former world-record holder, Alberto Salazar, and highly regarded U.S. middle distance coach, Scott Razcko.  On hand for these two sessions will be world-class runners Alan Webb and Adam & Kara Goucher.

Session 3:  Footwear…finding the right fit to ensure optimal performance and injury prevention: Leading footwear experts will explain how to evaluate footwear needs for individual athletes.  Biomechanist, Dr. Gordon Valiant, and Nike Running Product Director, Phil McCartney, will cover topics such as issues related to over-pronation and the latest ideas on how to prevent running injuries through footwear.  Each coach will receive a personally fitted pair of Nike Running Shoes at this session.
